How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

Our Poundland had the turbans - I bought one - but it's too small for me.

It's a sort of twist it at the front and pull it back to link onto a button - but it ends up halfway back on my hair and defeats the object.

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 09:47

I use Maybeline 24 hour foundation, which is good because it stays put for ages. It's quite thick though so you only need a little bit - which is good because it lasts ages but you're in danger of looking like you're going out on stage if you use too much!

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 09:52

Does the BBH dry your hair quickly?

I have fine hair that needs volume so I've always used a Charles Worthington hot brush thingy (you know the hair dryers with the round metal brush on the end) but it takes too long to do in the morning, although my hair is almost waist length so that's probably why? I'm getting it cut to more shoulder length soon!

mosschops30 · 28/02/2012 09:54

I love the YSL foundation for winter when i need a bit mre coverage. Its the one with the brush but the YSL lady said its easier to squeeze on your hand and apply with fingers its lovely.
In the summer i use the clinique light moisturising foundation, cant remember what its called but it was lovely

My LD nail file arrived. I'm in love!

It's just brilliant and I'm not terrified I slice my skin (as I've done with the cardboard style emery boards). And it's got its own little case

Thanks to mrsmartin for the recommendation!

Kellamity · 28/02/2012 10:31

carpe where did you get your LD nail file from?

mosschops30 · 28/02/2012 11:00

Envy still waiting on mine (from Amazon)

valiumredhead · 28/02/2012 11:20

Robin no ime the BBH has to be used on dry hair and is disappointing - it gives me split ends too! Other people rave about it though so it's something you have to try for yourself.

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 11:37

I think I'll stick with my CW then! I've had it for years but thought that the BBH might be something to consider when it dies.

WhyAlwaysBoris · 28/02/2012 11:51

CarpeJugulum i bought the same turban thing from poundland because that is all that they had. Tried it a couple of times but now works well- i found you have to bend over to let the hair fall into a sort of pony tail and then put it on so that when you wind the end around the pony tail is wound into it ...i hope that makes sense!

CarpeJugulum · 28/02/2012 11:53

Nail file is this one from Amazon.

Turban is just tooo small for my head - it's not the hair, it's the head! Blush

mosschops30 · 28/02/2012 12:05

Yay the Opi nail envy has arrived, doesnt say anythng about using it as a base coat though.
Just waiting on seche vite top coat, LD crystal file and LE body exfoliator

clippityclop · 28/02/2012 12:36

What shampoo and conditioner do you all use? In recent months I've tried Charles Worthington, VO5, and given up and gone back to Pantene volume and body because the others were too harsh somehow, left my hair flyaway. I like to wash and blow dry it at least every other day. Hairdressers said I should go for a 'clear' shampoo, nothing creamy as it will leave build up? My hair is just past shoulder length, fine textured and naturally blonde in a layered bob shape. The only styling products I use are either a squirt of Pantene mousse or a bit of Bed Head volume spray. Don't want to spend a fortune please!

clippityclop pantene is the devils shampoo Grin

i also have fine, flyaway, blonde shoulder length hair. I use Unberto Gianini (the one that looks like a dildo), brightening shampoo and conditioner (its the yellow one). The shampoo is clear not creamy and the conditioner is nice and light so doesnt make my hair greasy.
I bought the hair mask last week which is also lovely.
My hair looks good at the moment Smile

TwllBach · 28/02/2012 13:52

I always use my BBH on dry/mostly dry hair. If I was using it to get body then I think I would be disappointed with it, but because I'm using it mostly for the placebo effect Grin I am really happy with it! IMO it makes my hair shinier and look more 'finished.' I don't bring it all the way down to the ends either, I start at my roots and then get bored half way down, so hopefully that will help me avoid split ends

rarebreed · 28/02/2012 13:57

Just read this thread, will grab some primer next time im in Tesco, will also deep condition hair, de-fuzz and exfoliate tonight. Am very pale, which is the best moisturiser with fake tan?

valiumredhead · 28/02/2012 14:12

Re nail files - just got a Barabra Daly Crystal one in Tesco for £4 it is better than the one I spent much more on. It wasn't by the make up, it was where the bits and pieces like brushes are if that helps!

drywhiteplease · 28/02/2012 15:55

Am not near a tesco.looked at Boots one at £18 (have £5 off voucher) and M and S at £12.....what do we think?

clippityclop · 28/02/2012 15:55

Thanks Mosschops and Issimma. Will check those out in Boots tomorrow! Whole family uses Pantene and we are all starting to look a bit greasier a day after washing, not good! TwllBach - haven't invested in a BBH yet but think that might be a good move.

valiumredhead · 28/02/2012 15:59

Ebay for crystal files is even cheaper.

alessthandomesticgoddess · 28/02/2012 16:00

Hijack but what the hell is BB cream, which is the best and what do I do with it? Op

Kellamity · 28/02/2012 16:53

Just returned from Boots with a tub of coconut oil, an LD nail file (complete with case Wink) and a bottle of Seche Vite! Happy Days! Grin

blobtobetter · 28/02/2012 17:58

Okay Dokay - pay day tomorrow!! Want to order some lovely things to actually make me want to be groomed!

What is the best moisturiser to use? I get bored because the one I have takes FOREVER to rub in!

I used to have one with self tan in it but it made my bed orange and I smelt like biscuits. Have been casperish ever since.

What should I treat myself to?

I love St Tropez everyday. It's never streaky and doesn't smell too much

Just ordered OPI nail envy. Excited! I hate my flaky nails.
