How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

Which primer would you recommend MrsM?

It depends on your skin type and what you want from it but the tesco barbera daly one is a really good all-rounder and usually on offer (so you can get it for less than a fiver)

I definitely need to sort out my routine. All I use is a moisturizer with a touch of sunless tanner and before bed, after a good cleanse I use " Bio Oil" which is perhaps not the best thing to use on the face However, skin is soft and does not feel dry.

I should revamp my routine really....just don't know where to start.

well if it is working for you then carry on with it - only change it if you aren't happy. Even then you probably don't need an overhall - it might just mean you need to give yourself a facial once a week eg: do a double cleanse, exfoliate, face mask, tone, moisturise.

Also, if you don't currently tone, adding one after cleansing should also give you a brighter complexion. Just a cheap one from your supermarket will do - just make sure it is alcohol free (brands like simple, olay etc should have them for £2 or £3.)

Thanks Mrs Martin,

No, I currently don't tone. I'll give it a try and pick one up after work. Hopefully it will come with instructions! Blush

Also in terms of brands for facial masks is there a reasonably priced one you can recommend.

Thanks for the advice I really appreciated it.

Do you know I'm really not too sure re facial masks (I use elemis so perhaps a tad pricey?) - maybe start a thread? Soap and glory masks are always getting talked about on here but I haven't personally used them.

With toner - soak half a cotton wool pad (get the round disks) and just wipe it all over the face (towel rdy face after cleansing then apply). That's it Grin!

Right that doesn't sound too technical, will give it a go. Smile

Thanks again.

I can never get my nail polish to last, but I don't really mind! Can anyone recommend a good base coat and does it effect the vite-ness of the seche vite? I like my nails ready to go as soon as poss.

I have a really physical job so think I am unlikely to get my nail polish to last much longer than a couple of days?

Is that this one MrsM? I have looked at that funnily enough because I like the Barbara Daly range. Looks like it is on 3 for 2 at the moment so I'll have to get a couple of other bits, what a shame :)

Gosh i'm enjoying reading this thread, v good distraction from my awful head.
I have actually cleansed and moisturised and brushed my hair this morning, which is an advance at any rate!
Do you need primer if you don't wear foundation (i only really wear if if going out for the night)?
Can i use clear nail varnish for top coat and base coat or does it need to be special stuff?

Report
mrsmartin · 22/02/2012 14:33

wanna be - yes that's it Smile
boris I find clear polish doesn't work as a base/top coat but try it and see - will certainly be cheaper Smile
hatcam I use opi nail envy as my nails need the strengthening properties but the nails inc kensington caviar one is really good and dries really quickly (some one said the top coat from the same range is very good too on another thread). Smile

Thanks mrsmartin. Will try it, still have doubts I can make it last but will def give it a go.

Hatcam...it could be any number of things...I found Seche Vite to be my holy grail but it doesn't work for everyone and it does give a thicker look which alot of people don't like. I think growing out (and buffing out) all of the flakes in my nails probably has just a large part to play in the longevity of my manicure.

So sorry whyalwaysboris and for everyone else I think grooming is the best and easiest way to make yourself feel good about your self image.it does not need to be expensive or really time consuming.

Agree with comment about keeping clothes clean and ironed.
Polish shoes.
Accessorise.
Get a decent hair cut and trim ever 8 weeks.
Wear make up.

I have always done that and would feel awful if I didn't.think I even had mascara and nail varnish on during births of my 2 dcs!!!!

My routine is simple;
I wash and blow dry hair every other day.straighted on day when not blow drying.
As soon as I get up,before getting in shower I moisturise face.
Make up takes 5 mins.
In the evening I just cleanse, tone and night cream quickly.
I get my eyebrows and bikini line done every 8 weeks .
Get hair trimmed every 8 weeks.
Nails I do myself.handcream always before I go to bed.
And with nails I always use base coat (sticky) and Jessica pure brilliance top coat which dries it v quickly.dont wear nail varnish all the time, because it seems to wreck my nails.use a buffer every day.

drywhite - doesn't taking the polish off everyday have a negative effect on your nails? Also - I think that's the first time I've ever heard of someone doing their face before their shower...very interesting...

Agree with posters re eyebrows (and 'tache etc!) I do these ad hoc as required. Nails I do once a week, two coats and that usually lasts as long as I don't wash up too much!

Make up I do ' natural' for days Im leaving the house, touce éclat for dark circles, mascara and bronzer.

Wish I did but rarely do : hair styling. Might get another Brazilian blow dry to sort that out.

Epilate arm, legs etc as required.

Highlights and trim as required, usually every three months.

mrsmartin I don't take my nail varnish off every day! I said I don't wear it every day because it wrecks my rubbish nails (soon to be amazing, possibly with help of OPI stuff recommended by MN).
I moisturise as soon as I get up to allow it to really soak in my pores opened by shower before applying my foundation.

It's just that you said you buff everyday...I assumed you meant your nails (it didn't make much sense to me but I though 'hey ho - each to their own). Grin
I do my skincare post-shower so my pores are open and I get the most out of my cleanser etc.

Opi nail envy, avoplex oil and avoplex exfoliating cream are my nails' best friends Grin and the leighton denny crystal file, and seche vite...Blush

I think I am groomed but in a cheap low maintenace way Smile

FACE - use a wash of foaming cleanser (Clinique when feeling flush and Simple age resist when not), then use a facial wipe to remove last traces of dirt. Followed by Simple age resist day cream or Clinique anti age night cream

I have eyebrows threaded for £3 every 3 months in Harrow Shopping Centre. Every other day, I pluck out any strays with Tweezermans.

MAKE UP - Clinique tinted moisturiser, Bourjois Blush, Clinique mascara and Clinique lip gloss.

HAIR - Wash every 2-3 days with l'oreal elvive smooth intense shampoo and conditioner. Deep condition weekly. Been wearing naturally wavy and just straightening at weekends or for nights out.

Hair cut and highlights every 10 weeks

BODY - daily shower and wash with Clinique sparkle body wash. Followed by Clinique body butter on any dry areas. Shave unwanted body hair 2x weekly.

NAILS - toe nails I keep painted a dark shade in winter - Chanel rouge noir. Finger nails I keep short and rounded and paint either clear or a taupe shade. In summer I paint toe nails a coral red colour and keep finger nails clear.

And I'm told I look good dor 35 Grin

This thread has turned expensive!! Today I bought OPI Nail Envy, a crystal nail file, deep conditioner and a body brush.

Tempted by Boots Protect and Perfect body lotion - not sure I can bring myself to spend £27 on a body cream though!!

blob you are going to look (and feel) so hot! And the fact you spent cash will spur you on to actually use the stuff regularly (though never buy nail envy full price again - the most you should ever pay is £10-11 tops).

Me? Hot?! I have never been hot! I want to be the best version of me - I sound like a grown up - not wanting to look like a celebrity!

Spending a lot on the OPI stuff didn't bother me but the price of the moisturiser does! Crazy!!
