I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Correctmeifiamwrong · 10/02/2012 15:51

No no no no nonononono

no

too scared to try it.

Psammead · 10/02/2012 15:52

Voidka, yes! I ended up buying nice hairdresser type scissors because I was doing it regularly, but any sharp scissors will do.

You're a bad bad Psam. I will not sway to this peer pressure.

I think this fear is stemming from the pinking shear incident when I was 3. My sodding neglectful mother kept promising to cut my fringe but was busy packing for our holidays. So I took matters into my own hands.

Suffice to say the family photos of Majorca 1982 have long since been "lost"

At that age I had a boys' haircut. Thanks mum you lazy mare.

Now, all in all I have taken a good 8" off my hair today.

I am taking bets on how long it will take DH to notice, if ever Grin

OMG just had a nosey at your photos. You're my more attractive yet identical twin. Its like some kind of sign Shock

Hairynigel · 10/02/2012 15:56

Do you have to put the pony tail to the side of your head if you have a side parting? That video looked like her bobble was at the side...

I'm so tempted to do this but I don't want to do it drastically wrong!

Also, do you need hairdressing scissors or will any old scissors do?

HillyWallaby · 10/02/2012 15:57

'I just hack into it with the scissors pointing towards my head'

Ok. I need a really stiff drink.

ViviPru · 10/02/2012 16:00

Mental image of ladies up and down the country this evening with stiff drink in one hand, kitchen scissors in the other and laptop balanced precariously on the knee.. Look what you've started, OP!!!

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 16:00

Ooo, I have dressmaking scissors that haven't yet been ruined by cutting pizza/sausages like the kitchen scissors. I shall attempt this tonight. DH is going to be horrified Grin

StickAForkInMe if you do start that thread, I would like it noted at this point that I take no responsibility for any loss or damage arising from any actions or omissions and that anything I may have said was purely for information and was not intended as advice. If you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a MN haircut or similar, please seek advice from a professional. Always read the label.

HillyWallaby · 10/02/2012 16:01

I have looked. I'm cynical. For a start, the difference between a pro snipping into the ends and you doing yourself, holding the scissors backwards in a cack-handed stylee....hmmm.

I also want to know if it's necessary to put the pony tail on the side?

HillyWallaby · 10/02/2012 16:02

Grin at LadyW

Psammead · 10/02/2012 16:02

I'm not anyone's more attractive anything Grin I just take millions of pics until I find one that wont kill the internets.

HairyNigel yes, to the side you have your parting.

Hilly Grin It's terrifying at first, but after a few times you just hack away blissfully.

I actually have some proper hair scissors somewhere. I sort of wish I didn't now. Confused

I am tempted

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 16:04

LadyW Grin 4hours and counting, and I'm going in with the scissors!

HillyWallaby · 10/02/2012 16:05

Hahaha - that's what I do too Psammy. I have never changed my fb profile pic EVER, or uploaded any more recent ones, because it's the one single photo of me where I look gorgeous and I prefer the rest of the world to think I always look like that.

ViviPru · 10/02/2012 16:05

I cannot wait for the updates on this thread!

MrsDeeBee · 10/02/2012 16:06

I did this for the first time about 5 weeks ago.

It is brilliant ! I had hair that was all nearly the same length, really boring, which is awful on me as my hair is very fine. (My hair is just past my shoulders).

Did the pony tail thing, but also placed another hairband further up the tail so I couldn't cut off to much at once, took a deep breath and cut, then did the 'stabby stabby cut cut cut' bit.

Took an even deeper breath, and took hair out of pony tail. Hey presto, gorgeous hair cut with layers !

I don't know who was more shocked, me or DH ! I was looking in the mirror feeling all smug and thinking how great MN is, and he came in and went "Oh ! Turn round. Actually, that's good, you've got really good even layers, ooh, it's lovely" !

I shall be giving myself a trim in a couple of weeks. Grin

mrsalwaysawake · 10/02/2012 16:08

Tempted...

tanfastic · 10/02/2012 16:08

I have started doing this. Haven't had a hair cut for about six months now. My hair looks great (I think!). My mum bought me some professional hairdressing scissors for Christmas.

At my Christmas meal myself and colleagues were talking about hairdressers and I mentioned that I cut my own hair and it was like tumbleweed. Ten pairs of eyes fixated on my head. I didn't think it was that bad Confused

ChunkyPickle · 10/02/2012 16:09

Right, I just did it I (with some scissors in the pen pot on my desk), not fringe short - just jaw-short (every few years I get a fringe, then remember why I grew it out) - and it bloody works brilliantly.

I was previously a 'split into two plaits and chop an inch off' girl, but I think I've been converted.

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 16:15

Chunky Did you manage the chopping in bit ok? How long was your hair to start with?

Psammead · 10/02/2012 16:16

tanfastic

I get that, too. Instant scrutiny. Very odd feeling!
