I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

I love this too, been doing it for about a year now and it never fails. I have the same type of hair as psammead and it really works, especially when combined with bbbh too much time on mn Grin

InfiniteFairylights · 10/02/2012 15:33

Quenelle yes, it works really well on my curly hair... I used it for about 2 years and only stopped because my friend now cuts my hair when she highlights it.

Magneto · 10/02/2012 15:33

I could do the lopping off of the pony tail bit easily Grin but how do you get the choppy bit right?

ArielNonBio · 10/02/2012 15:34

That would so not work on my frizzy, curly barnet. I shudder when I think of the results Grin

FloydieDoydie · 10/02/2012 15:35

I used to love celebrity scissorhands! And The Salon. Good telly Smile

Psammead · 10/02/2012 15:35

Magneto, I just hack into it with the scissors pointing towards my head Grin

Sometimes I do it, let it dry, see that it looks a bit crap, and tidy it up in a dry ponytail.

I couldn't get my head round the idea of cutting off my hair while it was at the top/front (I wasn't convinced the layers would be in the right place) but I did cut my own hair last autumn by doing a dead straight centre parting, pulling it into a ponytail at the nape of my neck and cutting it off there. Was a bit nervewracking as there was quite a lot of hair and I was looking in the mirror so it was hard to point the scissors in the right direction, but it turned out as a quite serviceable jaw-length bob, a bit shorter at the back like a bob should be.

I was very pleased and would do it again except I'm not sure it's grown enough yet.

My hair is curly though, which hides a multitude of sins.

I have a bit of a fear of hairdressers after years and years of DD's nits. She doesn't get them very often now but I'm still paranoid.

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 15:37

The choppy bit is what concerns me too Magneto

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 15:38

Ah fuck it. My hair is pissing me off, I am going to try it this evening when the DC are in bed. Nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.

Magneto · 10/02/2012 15:40

I have poker straight hair which never looks good because it just doesn't do anything! I've yet to find a cut that doesn't look really flat and crap all the time. I will probably end up borrowing mils hairdressing scissors at some point now....

LadyWellian · 10/02/2012 15:41

Go for it, StickAForkInMe. I had loads of people come up to me saying they liked my haircut. When I told them I had done it myself they were Shock

HillyWallaby · 10/02/2012 15:41

I'm with Vivipru. Terrifying indeed. Shock

I need to have a stiff drink before I can look at any links or photos.

Quenelle · 10/02/2012 15:43

Hmmm.

LadyW Look out for a thread on here later on this evening moaning that I have a pageboy haircut Grin

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 15:45

You know those scissors that hairdresser use to thin/feather the hair? Would my DCs zigzag scissors do the same job? Grin

GreenEyesAndHam · 10/02/2012 15:45

Psammead yours looks lovely, but hell will freeze over before I take a pair of scissors to my own swede

again

Zwitterion · 10/02/2012 15:45

I've done this a few times. In fact years ago my hairdresser put layers in my hair using this technique. Took her about 5 minutes and I felt ripped off to be honest!

Psammead I hold you fully responsible for how mine turns out. Have looked at your photos and your hair looks fab, mine is similar length so if it doesn't end up looking as good as yours I will blame you for posting this thread. Wink

Voidka · 10/02/2012 15:49

Can I use my Kitchen scissors :o

StickAForkInMeImDone · 10/02/2012 15:50

Quenelle That is how I'm going to look in about 4 hours isn't it??
