I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Fighting the urge to cut myself a fringe so that I don't have this "hair in my face" feeling... It know it won't end well but it's soooooooooo tempting right now. Somebody come and take these scissors away from me, please!!!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/02/2012 19:37

lazydog I've just done the exact same thing. I have swingy bits at the sides which fall in my eyes and tickle my chin and nose. I'm tempted to cut them shorter and fringier but I have a very low forehead so it could go horribly wrong.

It's a definite improvement though. I cut about a foot and a half off it. It still looks long at the back.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/02/2012 19:38

I won't if you won't Grin

lazydog · 17/02/2012 19:46

I really shouldn't... I know I shouldn't... If I do I'll probably be faced with a comical disaster-hair-do that would take ages to grow out instead of just waiting a couple of months before this'll feel less annoying. I trust myself now (11:45am) but come 9pm tonight and a few glasses of vino...............

Knittedslippers · 17/02/2012 19:52

I did it on Wednesday.........and ended up at the hairdressers half an hour later! I don't know where I went wrong but it was a bloody disaster. Gave the hairdresser a good laugh though as she analysed her way through it!

Orlando · 17/02/2012 20:02

Just did it. LOVE it.

makes list of Stuff To Buy with vast savings on hairdresser

Chickensinthekitchen · 17/02/2012 20:26

Cut it long!! Shakes head :-)

SparkySparrow · 17/02/2012 20:27

Bloody hell PlentyOfPubeGardens Shock You are braver than me!!!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/02/2012 20:29

It's still halfway down my back!

SparkySparrow · 17/02/2012 20:32

Right I'm bored! Tally coming up!

HSMM · 17/02/2012 20:51

has anyone cut their hair shorter than chin length? Do you have a photo on your profile? I have been doing my hair in the unicorn for a couple of years, but it's still long and I'm thinking of going shorter.

countessbabycham · 17/02/2012 20:54

I am considering making the layers shorter (my hair is shoulder length) and possibly just a wee bit more Suzi Quattro (hopefully)
Quinn I loved the demo video you linked - notice she didn't do the choppy in bit and she looked quite beautiful.

SparkySparrow · 17/02/2012 21:07

Ok.....

wait for it.....

SparkySparrow · 17/02/2012 21:11

Everyone who has posted they have done it, plus daughters/nieces etc........

its 137 !!!!

(I would like to stress that I did my best to count accurately, but got a bit got a bit distracted bored come page 21 Hmm , but I am fairly sure its around the right number!)

Right, now I'm off to get a life! Grin

lazydog · 17/02/2012 21:16

Damn - wish I'd seen the vid that QuinnFabray linked to first - that would have been much better technique for me, I think. This is quite a drastic change with very noticeable layers, whereas hers was much more subtle for a coward like me Nevermind...

DonkeyTeapot · 18/02/2012 10:22

Thanks Sparky , I was wondering!

Averaging £40 a haircut, between us we've saved £5,480! No wonder the economy is on it's knees! Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 18/02/2012 13:05

I've slept on it, washed and dried it and I've decided I don't like it! Angry

It's like I've cut my hair straight into the annoying growing-out stage between short and long. It's oingy-boingy, wavy, sticky-uppy at the sides and hanging in my face. It's a 'good haircut' - the layers are nice and even - but it just doesn't suit my hair type or face shape.

I once did myself a lovely cut by just dangling my head upside down and carefully and slowly trimming it until it was the same length all over - about 2" away from the scalp. I'm off to do that now Smile

diddl · 18/02/2012 14:31

I cut my hair but would never do this cut as it is too "layery" for me.

But if you have the ponytail further back, do you get less obvious layers or less difference between the longest & shortest iyswim?

Surely the ponytail doesn´t have to be so far forward?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 18/02/2012 15:04

There, that's better Smile

I'll probably thin the back out a little more over the next few days and it's not quite as even as it could be but it looks not bad at all, suits me a lot better and isn't in my face. It's just about collar length and layered all over.

diddl, wherever the ponytail is, that will be where the hair is shortest, so to put it further back could produce some odd results. I think some people on this thread did do that though, so perhaps read back and see how they got on?

countessbabycham · 18/02/2012 15:30

Oh Plenty I'd love to have seen pictures of the before, after, and after the after Grin

Maybe the satisfaction of this cut does depend ultimately on whether it suits the individual.

It was the haircut my hair had been waiting for all its life! Its perked me up no end,and I've even been spurred on to change where my parting goes...

Chickensinthekitchen · 18/02/2012 15:37

Diddi i cut the unicorn very long ( i measured a jaw length piece and added a bit)
I got a jenfer annisten cut. I have very thick hair so it looks good.
I would tnk moving the unicorn back would put your layers on top of your head!!! So a fringe on the top.....
i would just be over cautious, i cut mine thinking i might need to do it again, i didn't.
there are loads of demos online....enjoy

Bluetinkerbell · 18/02/2012 16:07

Right... I've just read through it all! will attempt DD and me later... Grin
DD who is 3 has never had her hair cut before, so will only do a little bit, she says she likes long hair Wink

Bluetinkerbell · 18/02/2012 17:23

DD's hair is done... it feels much better already no more split ends!
Been trying to get my hair tied, but I just can't manage to get it all nice and smooth... anyone tips? or will I have to wait till DH gets home so he can assist?

cheesebaby · 18/02/2012 19:57

Another very happy customer here Grin

I have very thick, wavy, just between shoulder and bra strap length hair, which had some very long and uninspiring layers in courtesy of my last cut in November. I ran straighteners through, did a unicorn and pulled the bobble down far enough that I only chopped about two and a half inches off. A bit of random snippy snippy stabby stabby later and I have the cut I always wanted but never bloody managed to get at the hairdresser with layers starting at about jaw length. I didn't take anything off the overall length, I don't think, but it's got rid of the awful hangy curtains I had before which always put me off wearing my hair down.

I would never in a million years have dared try this without this thread, so thank you!! Thanks
