I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

I did it on dry hair too.

DonkeyTeapot · 13/02/2012 20:52

Right. First attempt - snip snip, stab stab, looked no different even though I took about two inches off. Re-tied unicorn pony tail and cut again, snip snip, undid pony tail, realised I forgot stab stab. Oops. Oh well, I'm hoping the curls will disguise it a bit. Roughly scrunched it a bit to get an idea how it looked, seems alright but remarkably silimar to how it looked six months ago or so when I was trying to grow it!

Got DP to colour it for me, bless him, he is a good 'un. He did almost give me a free facelift to go with my new haircut though, when he was combing the dye through. Just waiting for it to brew, once it's washed off I'll style it properly and report back.

ManateeEquineOhara · 13/02/2012 20:56

I have been doing this for ages - always with dry hair. Did it on DD yesterday, it looks quite good but I am concerned I have broken some kind of rule in using it on a child!

TastesLikePanda · 13/02/2012 21:06

I did it this morning after DH left for work and it looks great! I had very long hair anyway and curly to boot so that would hide any slight imperfections in my cutting techniques Grin

Now I still have the length at the back but have lovey bouncy layers through the front and the curl has boinged right up!

Kept swishing it about at work in the 'just stepped out of a salon' style and hoped that people would go 'oh, haircut?' but nobody did so I resorted to fishing for compliments... but the colleagues who I looked at hopefully liked it!

FayKnights · 13/02/2012 21:31

I've been umming and arring about this since Friday and as I'm a clearly sucker for a bit of peer pressure I have just done mine on dry hair and happy to report that it looks really rather bloody nice! Donkey can I please borrow your colourtist DP?

Jenda · 13/02/2012 21:32

Done!!! has bit below shoulder length hair and a grown out side fringe, took about 3 inches off and had to do a bit more on the fringe when down. looks all lovely and swishy! have been avoiding haircut expense too- so chuffed!!!

FayKnights · 13/02/2012 21:32

I meant colourist!!

bushymcbush · 13/02/2012 21:42

Found this thread about 25 minutes ago.

Watched video. Twice.

Found scissors (Edwardian antique sewing scissors, very small but the sharpest ones I have).

Now have unbelievably nice hair. Similar to how it was before but 3 inches shorter and much shaplier.

About to re-emerge downstairs. Wonder if DH will notice anything?

Chocolateporridge · 13/02/2012 21:57

I really want to join the club and try this but I already have a fringe - how do I go about making sure that my fringe has a bit snipped off too (I can't see very well out of one eye so I always have trouble cutting my fringe!). Should I do it in two seperate pony tails, one for the main body of my hair and then one for my fringe?
I'm so excited!!!!

SouthernerUpNorth · 13/02/2012 21:57

OMG, that is scary! How could you even attempt to do that by yourself (without the aid of lots of wine)?

FoofFighter · 13/02/2012 22:00

bushymcbush you'll need a namechange now!

FoofFighter · 13/02/2012 22:01

fringe all in same pony tail choc. are you wanting a straight across or a side sweepy one?

rusmum · 13/02/2012 22:03

Oh bugger! Now i will have to have a go' Wink

SparkySparrow · 13/02/2012 22:03

Shock Southerner You would not, I repeat, NOT want to do it with wine in your system.

Chocolate I just did my fringe on its own. No pony tails, I just snipped!

SparkySparrow · 13/02/2012 22:04

Its a side fringe btw. I feathered get me it down! Iygwim.

notveryinventive · 13/02/2012 22:06

chocolate I would put all hair apart from fringe up in ponytail, snip, then snip fringe seperately, then again whenever I go through a fringe stage (which I am tempted to do again after this thread) I have always cut it myself anyway.

Chocolateporridge · 13/02/2012 22:12

Thanks Foof & Sparky & Notvery - I'd like a fringe that frames my face ie shorter in the middle than at the sides but with my wonky eyesight I always end up with a wonky fringe Blush

FoofFighter · 13/02/2012 22:15

Have a look on youtbe for a tutorial on how to cut certain fringe type?

DonkeyTeapot · 13/02/2012 22:31

Fay Course you can, I'll send him round. Don't ask him to cut though - he is a gardener and whilst dyeing my hair did mutter something about cutting hedges. I'm not quite sure what he was getting at!

I am all coloured and styled now (as styled as I get anyway), it looks nice enough, but still just like it looked eight months ago. At least the split ends are gone anyway. I'll leave it for now, but reserve the right to have another go in a week or two if I feel like it.

bushymcbush · 13/02/2012 22:32

Ha ha to namechange! Sadly, the hair referred to in my nickname would not be tamed by a ponytail haircut.

DH noticed immediately, went wide eyed and said "Oh you've been doing your hair," and was very complimentary about it. When I told him about the mn haircut he said we'd all be recognising each other in public by our identical hair dos!

Devora · 13/02/2012 22:32

Reporting back with mixed results. Started off well, but realised I wasn't going to get the length off the back (I like shoulder length with no fringe - shortest layers nearly at jaw length). So I did the two ponytail technique, but ended up with a bit of a shelf between the two sections. So then I started chopping at it. Freestyle. At midnight.

It doesn't look awful awful. I think I can get away with it [hopeful emoticon]. But I won't be boasting to anyone that I cut my own hair - then they'll look and see that the layers are really a bit rubbish.

But as I say, I am very impressed by the method. The problems only started when I went off-piste.

SparkySparrow · 13/02/2012 22:36

bushy I think I would be recognisable!
I have a mn scarf to go with my mn hair. Blush
Iv'e been well and truly mumsnetted in the last few months.

nothingoldcanstay · 13/02/2012 23:29

Bugger. Ruined mine yesterday. I have very thick curly long hair that needs a bit of shape. happy to cut it myself as hairdressers don't really know what to do with it either.
I tried this and now I have a 1970's bonkers hairstyle inclusive of frizz and blunt ends. I have washed it and now it's worse. I am going to have to straighten it for a couple of months I think. Sad

Jenda · 14/02/2012 10:14

I got my best mate to do it so if it looked hideous I could blame it all on her

Dru77 · 14/02/2012 12:18

I did this on DD(6) last night, Had to bribe her £20 to let me do it.

I took off about 1.5 inches but it doesn't look any different. I plaited her hair for bed and one side has a few bits coming out which weren't previously so there's obviously some length gone from the side but you can't tell when it's down.
