I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Chocolate I know what you mean about trying to describe things to the hairdresser. At last I've something that looks quite young and unstructured. Its such a relief as the last couple of hairdressers I've been to have given me what I would class as mature lady haircuts despite very careful instuctions and reference to pictures. Its like they feel the need to adapt my request because I am obviously way too ancient to carry it off.

bushymcbush · 14/02/2012 22:31

My friend asked me today if I'd had my hair done Grin.

My other friend said I was looking really well. Mind you, at 7 months pg with dc2 I have learned that 'really well' can be code for 'a bit on the hefty side'

Is it possible to do this and keep your hair long? I usually aim for about mid-shoulder blades or so (sometimes longer) when I go to the hairdresser. It just seems like this haircut pretty much means you'll end up with shoulder length or a bit longer?

FoofFighter · 14/02/2012 23:23

No you just cut into your unicorn much much much lower :) it's totally upto you how much you take off. Just chop an inch or two at a time and take it slowly :)

FoofFighter · 14/02/2012 23:23

Still not found my farking scissors btw! Angry

Honeydragon · 15/02/2012 09:19

Cake mine is the length you want, I trim at the bottom of the horn. Then make another smaller to layer the front and cut my fringe seperately.

I did it yesterday morning. Needed to do nape of the neck ponytail also to shorten the length and it's a bit uneven so need to get DH to straighten it for me Blush. Overall happy though. Has anyone been keeping tally since?

MrsPresley · 15/02/2012 12:08

I did this to my 10y DD last night and she is over the moon with it Smile I must admit it looks really good. Her hair was all one length at the sides and back with her fringe just sort of hanging to the sides (trying to grow it out), now there is definite different lengths at the sides and the back looks good too.

She says her hair looks like Selena Gomez now Grin Hmm

I didn't take too much off the length, maybe about 4 inches (done it twice though a couple of inches each time) but she says she'd like maybe a bit more off the bottom.

If I do it again I will try and keep the length at the front and just get the back a bit shorter.

Now she wants me to straighten it! She thinks it will look a better if I can straighten her natural kink out of it but I think it?s fine the way it is.

MaybeSheWill · 15/02/2012 13:59

I've just done my 11yo DD's hair, it looks lovely :)

CuttlefishDramas · 15/02/2012 18:01

Another vote from me! I just cut my long fine hair by only a couple of inches and it looks lovely - all feathery around the jawline.

Thanks
Chocolateporridge · 15/02/2012 21:48

Hahaha - my DH loves my new "do" and has coined the phrase "MumsNUT Haircut"!!!!!

MamaMimi · 16/02/2012 17:40

I'm thinking of doing this for myself and my 7 yo. We are both well overdue a haircut anyway.

Mine has long layers anyway but, apart from around her face dd's is one length. If I do this cut on her am I going to struggle to get it in the plait she wears for school everyday, without it trying to escape all over the shop?! Confused

countessbabycham · 16/02/2012 17:55

Mama it has caused some "plait - escape issues" in my DD.

MamaMimi · 16/02/2012 19:35

Oh, okey-dokey countess. Thanks for letting me know, may have to think again for dd then. hmmmmmmmm

Chickensinthekitchen · 16/02/2012 19:58

Ok add me to your tally!!!

I cut the unicorn very long, way longer than on the video And i am left with a jennifer annisten cut ( showing age here) its lovely very pleased with it. The layers are jaw length and its light and swishy.
I have aLso paid. A lot of money for this haircut in the past.

I think longer layer are nicer than the vIdeo hair, definately not a mullet.
Thans ladies i look like old me pre children:-)

diddl · 17/02/2012 08:21

Ooh Chickens, I think we need a picSmile

Chickensinthekitchen · 17/02/2012 12:35

Lol no chance, but oh my word so many compliments today!!! I might get some hairdressing scissors now, cant ever see me going to hairdressers again ( not that i went often)
I slept on it and it look like i had washed and blow it straight out of bed which is very odd, it never looks that good.
Very happy thanksagain

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/02/2012 17:08

I might do this tonight. I have bum-length completely grown out hair that I've got in a real rut with. Nobody says 'wow, your hair's nice!' they just say 'wow, your hair's long!' It's got this long because I hate going to the hairdressers.

If the worst comes to the worst I know it looks OK very very short because I've done it myself had it done like that before.

notveryinventive · 17/02/2012 17:14

I went to my mums today and she said how nice my hair looked. I have died it recently, but only the same colour as usual. She never says anything about my hair Grin My hairdressing scissors came yesterday so Im going to thin it out a bit too.

mrsmartin · 17/02/2012 18:08

I just did mine Grin. I have lost about 8 inches from the length at the back and loads or weight. I spent ages getting the pony right, then getting the cut absolutely perfect - needed to do 3 ponys: intitial one at very front of head, then one at nape of neck, then final one straight up from the crown. Length is definately even and perfect all over and layers are well defined but it took me a good 40 mins. And I was absolutely shitting cacking myself at one point trying to get the back right.

Add me to the list Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/02/2012 18:56

ok ...

DP won't be home for a couple of hours. I've got scissors and a hairbrush, half a can of beer, it's dark and I'm wearing a really weird fronty ponytail ....................HIT IT!!

lazydog · 17/02/2012 19:02

Another sheep here - Baaaa!

Verdict: Well, it doesn't look amazing or bad but I actually hate it because I cocked up on the length of the front/fringe bit and now it just won't quite tuck behind my ears. It was all one length before (about 8" below my shoulders) so I often had it tied back out of the way. Now the front layers don't quite reach the hairband if I try that and they look odd hanging down with the rest of my hair up. :(

But nevermind - my hair seems to grow about 2" a month so I shouldn't have too long at the clipping it back stage, and as I said, it doesn't look embarrassingly bad...

Chickensinthekitchen · 17/02/2012 19:08

Plenty of cut it long very long....i worked out length of jaw and added two cm. much better as i think the original cut makes the top a bit thin.

Good luck
