I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Bought some scissors, going to do it to iChat! Agh! If it works will do kids too lol

rusmum · 14/02/2012 13:39

That should say going to do it tonight lol will do before and after pics

Chocolateporridge · 14/02/2012 16:02

OK, me too!! I'll do it tonight and brave the wonky fringe - my hubby said he'd do it for me but he cried the first time I cut his hair so I think he might be trying to get his own back. Will wait till he's out ...

rusmum · 14/02/2012 17:24

Erm Sad agh Angry not sure! Layers are chunky! Took 2" off or so. Have to dye on then will dry and assess again ?

ameliagrey · 14/02/2012 17:48

This is a load of bollocks Smile no one can get a good hair cut following this. you are deluding yourselves.

countessbabycham · 14/02/2012 18:18

Are you a hairdresser ameliagrey? Wink

SparkySparrow · 14/02/2012 18:34

Don't knock it!

I have had lots of compliments since I hacked into my barnette. Grin

SparkySparrow · 14/02/2012 18:35

Oh, and I must know rusmum how do you do the sun????

rusmum · 14/02/2012 18:48

Lo ???? I phone icons x x. Liking the hair actually now Grin

SparkySparrow · 14/02/2012 18:50

Bugger. i don't have a Iphone :(

FoofFighter · 14/02/2012 19:02

Ameliagrey what's it to you?

I too had compliments, from a hairdresser actually!

rusmum · 14/02/2012 19:04

Wonder of thinning scissors would help?

ameliagrey · 14/02/2012 19:17

Unfortunately not Countessbaby but I have just spent a fortune this week having a cut and highlights done Smile and I know that dragging my hair into a pony tail and snipping away is not going to replace the time ( and training) my lovely fit Spanish hairdresser spends cutting my lovely locks. he cuts in between the layers, fiddles with the ends and would cut every single hair on its own, time allowing.

No way can you replicate that at home.

SparkySparrow · 14/02/2012 19:26

Is it the haircut you like amelia or the fit Spanish hairdresser running his hands through your hair? Wink

countessbabycham · 14/02/2012 19:27

Nah - I must admit amelia that noone came and offered me coffee and biscuits while I was grappling around in a dark bathroom with blunt scissors, either Grin
But then I didn't have to face the "do you want conditioner" question and have to wonder how much that'll cost, and how much of a tip I have to leave without looking tight, and whether I've still got the bus fare home, and whether I'll be finished in time to pick the kids up etc etc etc Grin

pettyprudence · 14/02/2012 19:48

Just popping by to say I did it! I did a combo of unicorn and nape of neck as my hair isn't long enough for unicorn. I did a bit of extra layering as I like my hair choppy. I love it, its way better than the times I've had dh or dsis have hacked in to my hair Grin

ameliagrey · 14/02/2012 20:17

Am I that transparent sparky? Grin

MeltedChocolate · 14/02/2012 20:29

Amelia - this is genuinely the best cut I have ever had. Having said that though our local hairdressers seem to be AWFUL!

notveryinventive · 14/02/2012 20:38

amelia Ive never had a great hair-cut either so for me doing myself will do until I make my millions Grin Then again in the last 5 years or so I think Ive had it cut about 3 or 4 times so it needed doing and by no means its brilliant, but I like it. The thing I like best about hardly getting my hair cut means that ive got that much of it straightening or styling it makes no difference so saves me a job Grin I wash it and leave it to dry or I just brush it. Much easier for a lazy cow like me

Chickensinthekitchen · 14/02/2012 21:18

Have read this thread with delight and excitment, then i watched the videos and my god it looks easy! I did pop some layers in myself a few weeks ago, not bad either.

I dont think i liked how heavy the top layers were, if i cut the unicorn much longer would the layers be around my jaw? Anyone done that. I have the thickest hair in the worl ( no joke) i worry the original cut would make my head look square iyswim.

Thanks.

Devora · 14/02/2012 21:20

Having said that my haircut is a bit crap, I have to report that I got an unsolicited COMPLIMENT on it today.

rusmum · 14/02/2012 21:22

Will def gouge again. Unicorn? Have missed something?

Chocolateporridge · 14/02/2012 21:26

I think this thread might turn me into a haircut junkie! I bit the bullet (grabbed the scissors) and made a unicorn "do" then chopped (and chopped and chopped- must get better scissors), held my breath while taking down the now stubby unicorn horn and nearly shouted out loud cos the results were fantastic! I enjoyed it so much that I had another go to make it a bit shorter and did the stabby stabby bit for extra style. I LOVE it - it's the kind of haircut that I've been trying to describe to my hairdresser for years but she always sends me home feeling slightly miffed.
The worrying thing is that I want to do it again, I enjoyed it so much Grin.

I decided to leave my fringe though, cos of my wonky eye - my local supercuts will do it for a couple of quid and I wont be tempted to keep cutting and cutting and end up looking like the village idiot.
Massive thanks to Psammead - you've saved me a fortune Smile.

SparkySparrow · 14/02/2012 21:30

Yay Chocolate :)
It is addictive, isn't it!? I wanted to keep going but longer hair suits me so I forced myself to stop.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 14/02/2012 21:39

I've just done it this evening - got DH to do it! No pics, but am really pleased with it - certainly looks as good as my last few haircuts at the hairdresser, and have saved myself £45! Which I will now spend on getting my hair coloured by the hairdresser, as not going near home colour since last summer's mercifully brief "tragic goth" phase (thank you, John Frieda's Jet Black Dark Golden Brown Hmm) - it faded out with lots of sun and cheap dandruff shampoo, but my god it was ghaaaastly.

Yay! For the Mumsnet haircut! Grin
