Bare Escentuals: THE DEVIL'S OWN WORK

1028 replies

JodieHarsh · 25/09/2011 17:16

I must post about this. I have just spunked nearly ninety quid on some Bare Escentuals starter kit things.

I arrived at the counter in Stratford Westfield with a hideous bright red, sore, scarred, spotty, sweaty face, and some WITCH managed to take a decade off me with POWDER. Just powder! I mean - WT actual F?! A tube ride and a 20 minute walk home and it's still there. SURELY that's not right. I've used all sorts of super-max coverage matte stuff and it didn't cover ANYTHING like this well. O and I have the glowing rosy cheeks of a teen Shock

I promise I've not been giver a tenner to post this stuff. It's just I've spent so much I feel slightly sick. Does anyone else use this stuff? it's not going to last is it. i'm an idiot. What have I done

Why thank you cote:). Can I ask what your skin tone is? I are pale and pasty and don't suit tan, do you think it would suit me? Or are you, as your name suggests, a bronzed Godess?

hester · 26/09/2011 21:58

Alright, alright, you've got me interested. I'm middle-aged with dry, pale skin (in other words, lines and wrinkles). Will it suit me or shall I stick with my ultra-moisturising base?

Where is the cheapest place to buy this stuff?

What do I really need from the range?

JodieHarsh · 26/09/2011 22:03

Hester firstly, why did you choose that username??

Secondly

a. I think you probably wouldn't know unless you went to an orange counter lady and were 'done'. . . I don't see why not but unless it actually is the Devil's work there must be some people it doesn't suit...

b. QVC apparently

b. You need the starter kit thing for everything complexiony (there's everything else but tbh it's the skin coverage that's blown my bonce). Mine was £43 and it as 2 pots of foundation, a pot of light loose powder, a pot of bronzer, and 3 very good quality brushes....

We all need a liitle help Wink

prolificwillybreeder · 26/09/2011 22:33

Right, you've convinced me. Next time I'm in JL I'll get my face done.

TinyPawz · 26/09/2011 22:36

it weighs about as much as a fairy's fart Brilliant news.

hester · 26/09/2011 22:54

OK, I'm going to find a local supplier and get myself 'done'. Will report back Grin

Jodie, I just picked the name Hester because I was casting round for names I liked and came up with it. I know there used to be a RL Hester on here (not you with a namechange, is it?). It has stood the test of time - reckon I'm one of the few on MN to have had the same name on here for, ooh, must be 8 years now. But it has no particular history or meaning for me other than that.

TracyK · 27/09/2011 08:15

Some beauty salons do BE too - so if you don't want a public makeover - pop into a salon and ask them to give you a shot.
I used to use it and got fed up with it - might give it another go though.
I DO love Buxom lipglosses though. Get your fav colour and then I think ebay are much cheaper.

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 08:16

Ime QVC isn't the cheapest place to buy BE, FEELUNIQUE website is!

This is my new favourite thread Grin

gregssausageroll · 27/09/2011 08:20

Yes, but the advantage of a first purchase with QVC is that if you don't like it you have 30 days to return it. I love feelunique!

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 08:27

But you can take stuff back to Boots, Debenhams etc - they won't bat an eyelid and no rip off QVC postage either.

JodieHarsh · 27/09/2011 09:47

Another day of feeling beeeeeeyewtiful here Grin

I think DH might be slightly bored of it by now but the cat obliges by watching with interest.

If mine doesn't come today I just may cry (it wont) :(

littlepinkfizz · 27/09/2011 11:13

is it really that good? I have combo skin and don't fancy spending a fortune on something that doesn't look good an hour later.I usually break out in shine by 11 and am like a drying pan by 3.Would it suit me?

JodieHarsh · 27/09/2011 11:19

Melted it's like being 4 and waiting for Christmas morning, no?!

little I really hate the idea that people might spend all that on something that doesn't suit them, so all I can say is that on my 3rd day of using it, my red, sensitive, spot-prone skin, from which every brand of makeup I've ever tried as slid off within about 2 hours of application, looks amaze. I also think it's clearing up my spots. Yesterday I got home from work looking still made-up - even DH noticed.

I would recommend you head to a counter to try it out - the application process is tricky and essential to it looking good - then if you like it, go to feelunique.com and get one of these. It's loads cheaper than I paid in Boot AND has a free concealer. Bah!

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 11:25

You can get much smaller kits than those for about £12 if you don't want to spend £40 - although it's fab stuff.

Anyone tried the Matt version? I am tempted!

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 11:26

I paid £48 in Debenhams for that kit - bargain at £8 less!

JodieHarsh · 27/09/2011 11:27

Hmmmm I'm not sure about the matt stuff cos what I like is that it covers completely but with a bit of a dewy look. the nearest I've come to that is when I half-inched some of my sister's Chanel Lumiere powder Grin

SO much better than those stupid Dream Matt Mousse affairs, which made me look like I'd just shoved my face in a cake...

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 12:32

LOL Grin

Hmmmmmm will give it a go when I can get hold of a sample and report back!

SeymoreButts · 27/09/2011 13:29

Right, I have just bought a sample pack online, I am expecting big things I tell you. I don't even wear foundation... but I'm prepared to start, reading this thread has whipped me up into a frenzy!

I've had to guess the shade though (I went for fairly light) is it best to go to the counter for your first proper purchase??

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 13:34

Fairly light is for very light skin, I find FAIR better for me because I am pale but not porcelein iykwim.

valiumredhead · 27/09/2011 13:35

Where did you buy the sample from? I want a Matt sample!

JodieHarsh · 27/09/2011 13:43

Seymore hurrah!

Promise PROMISE to come and post when it arrives Grin

Application is the thing - you might take a while to get the hang of it, but we're here for you...

(I have a vague feeling there might be more important things in life than make-up but I can't...quite...think...what....)

I used Fairly Light and I'm pale but I wouldn't say porcelain...butI do favour the pale-and-interesting look, so given a choice of 2 that would do equallyI would opt for the paler, IYSWIM...

OP posts:
meltedchocolate · 27/09/2011 13:47

It didnt come :( but a bare escentuals concealor (sp??) brush that I ordered from ebay, not realising that one came in the tester kit has come. I shall put invisable concealor (sp??) while I wait then...

I can only be disapointed though because of the way you lot talk about it I am expecting it to turn me into Miss Katherine, D of C! :o

GetOrfMo1Land · 27/09/2011 13:49

I have not tried Bare Escentuals, but have been made over with some mineral stuff in a spa, and I hated it.

I looked all powdery old lady and made me look downy and patchy.

Never tried it since, but you sound boundlessly enthusiastic I might try it.

However - I have very dry skin. Would it suit me or is it only for greasy/combi complexion?

And is it a faff to put on - does it take ages? Because I can't be arsed with that, I want a 5 minute daily make up routine and no fucking about.
