Bare Escentuals: THE DEVIL'S OWN WORK

JodieHarsh · 25/09/2011 17:16

I must post about this. I have just spunked nearly ninety quid on some Bare Escentuals starter kit things.

I arrived at the counter in Stratford Westfield with a hideous bright red, sore, scarred, spotty, sweaty face, and some WITCH managed to take a decade off me with POWDER. Just powder! I mean - WT actual F?! A tube ride and a 20 minute walk home and it's still there. SURELY that's not right. I've used all sorts of super-max coverage matte stuff and it didn't cover ANYTHING like this well. O and I have the glowing rosy cheeks of a teen Shock

I promise I've not been giver a tenner to post this stuff. It's just I've spent so much I feel slightly sick. Does anyone else use this stuff? it's not going to last is it. i'm an idiot. What have I done

not sure what people are doing wrong but remember you need to let any primer or moisturiser really sink in first!

Think I will get fairly light. I am cool with the vampire pale look :)

Jux · 30/09/2011 13:35

My brushes are shedding SadSadSad anyone else had this problem? Do they just shed for a week and then stop?

Also, should you wash them? How often, with what?

meltedchocolate · 30/09/2011 13:36

A tiny couple of bits came out of mine Jux. :)

oh looks some one else beat m to the leaving it till all has sunk in advice :o

I got my warmth. Like what it does but really only need a tiiiny amount huh?

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 30/09/2011 13:41

I cannot possibly read all 18 pages of this thread, but the first 7 persuaded me to take myself off to Selfridges at lunchtime and buy some of this stuff. At least I thought I had ... I've bought Bare Minerals - is that the Wrong Stuff?! Shock

Toffeefudgecake · 30/09/2011 13:43

BareMinerals is made by Bare Escentuals, so it's the same stuff, TheReturn. I had the same panic when I received my starter kit from Looksfantastic.com.

Gregg - I would love to try this famous 'warmth' stuff. I'll pm you.

QuinnFabray · 30/09/2011 13:46

Mine's just arrived. I haven't got time to remove my make up now, so am just going to buff some over the top of the remnants of this morning's liquid foundation, which is now a shiny oily mess. Obviously this won't be a true test of BE, but I'm too impatient to wait until tommorrow.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 30/09/2011 13:47

Well... OMG! It's amazing! I started off with the bisque, applying it to all my acne scars and any redness. Then did a very light layer of the matte, then another (was so wary of putting too much on at once). All the buffing seemed to have lifted the concealer though so went over it all again with the bisque.

Another buffing of matte and then just touched up the scars with the powder but using the concealer brush and voilà! It looks fab!

I have a confession to make... My make up routine of the past 10 years has consisted of lots of concealer everywhere. Layer of the heaviest coverage foundation I could find. Then over again with concealer. Then, this is the part that used to make me die a little inside each morning - because some of my acne scars are so deep, I actually would go over them with the pointed end of a pair of tweezers which I'd put concealer on and 'fill' the holes in my skin Blush :( To think that BE has just done all that, only better, makes me want to weep. No more thick gunge clogging my skin!

I haven't put the veil on yet as DS woke up, I had a little disaster actually. I'd laid a towel on the table to catch any powder flying about and when I heard DS stir, I jumped up from the table and caught the towel. This resulted in the whole lot landing on the floor and I'd not replaced the lids so have lost probably a couple of days worth of powder/bisque :(

Still, I'm feeling so happy that I can't get upset about this! Thankyou Jodie, I hope BE do see this thread and reward you :)

hester · 30/09/2011 13:49

greggs - I wear a very rich moisturiser, so will allow for a good deal of fannying before applying my miracle powders.

And who would have thought that Fairly Light is lighter than Light? The name implies to me, 'Grudgingly Light' or 'Kind of Halfway Light'.

MadamTwoSwords · 30/09/2011 13:52

Thanks hester!

If anyone wants my warmth let me know, I can't get it right and no point it going to waste.

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 13:53

Oh Snape Grin Blush

I want nothing more than knowledge I have spread a little joy and happiness except maybe a lifetime supply of miracle dust Grin

I'm feeling a bit sick and shaky and drinking red wine before my VERY IMPORTANT MEETING so no time to read it all but just to say, my brush shed a few hairs for a couple of days then all was well.

And I hope everyone's doing all right with it in this heat. My only consolation about struggling to The Meeting in clothes way to warm for this heat is that my face will be perfect perfect I tell you ...

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 13:54

Ps I totes agree about the 'fairly light' thing. When we are all Head of Advertising for Bare Minerals we shall address this thorny matter.

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 13:55

PS Ohthisisgrape - I too am one of those ones FINALLY dispensing with wallpaper paste, and I'm convinced it's going to sort out the whole 'crap skin' ishoo....

Jux · 30/09/2011 13:59

Good luck with the meeting Jodie. I do hope BE reward you as you have really done them a massive favour.....

My face was almost perfect yesterday, and today is more than almost perfect and once I've got the technique/routine down pat, it will be perfect for evermore Grin

QuinnFabray · 30/09/2011 14:01

Okay, quick first impressions from someone who has used a LOT of different foundations in my quest for the perfect one. I'm talking maybe about 50 or more, all different kinds, including Lily Lolo and High Street minerals. Have got very oily skin, with lots of thread veins to cover, open pores etc. Currently using Estee Lauder DW light. Anyhow. . .

I like it, it really does give an amazing airbrushed finish, and can be layered to cover up, without looking cakey. Like the warmth, maybe because I always wear bronzer all over my face anyway. Like the mineral veil. I did as they suggest for oily skin, and use that before and after. Don't think I'm going to need the concealer.

I'm really not keen on the brushes though. There are far nicer, softer brushes out there. I immediately swapped theirs for my Sigma flat top kabuki brush, which is much softer, and more densely packed. I think this applied it much more efficiently and comfortably.

Not keen on the powdery mess, but I guess I was kind of expecting that from previous experience with minerals. I can live with it.

Off to do the school run now to see how it holds out shine wise. I usually get shiney within an hour. Will report back .

OhThisIsJustGrape · 30/09/2011 14:05

Well just tried to put on some of the veil but it lifted off my 'concealing'. How much difference does using the veil make to keeping shininess away?

Also, I only got the cheapy starter kit with the mini brushes, I'm thinking I need a bigger brush but then it won't fit in the teeny tiny lid Confused Will give it a couple of days to make sure I definitely like it then will go all out and order full size pot and brush :)

Good luck in your meeting Jodie - they'll all be staring at your face y'know Wink

valiumredhead · 30/09/2011 14:29

Jux

I had the same problem - both brushes shed hair like mad, even after a few months they were STILL doing it.

I contacted BE head office and explained I was a loyal customer etc etc and they said it was because I wasn't washing the brushes. Errrrrrr yes, I wash them once a week.

So they said they would send me a bottle of brush shampoo as their stuff makes a difference

Made no difference whatsoever and had to email twice to remind them to send me the shampoo Angry

It's just about died down now but this is after a year of using them. The smaller brush I just stopped using completely, the bigger one has finally stopped shedding.

Thing is apart from the shedding they work really well, normal kabuki ones don't seem to do the same job imo.

kerstina · 30/09/2011 14:39

Bit annoyed as I ordered light thinking it was the lightest shade am I alone in thinking that would make sense?? Fairly light being not as light as light !!!!

OhThisIsJustGrape · 30/09/2011 14:50

Fairly light is the lightest shade. I'm olive skinned and played it safe by ordering light (I figured I could add extra colour with the warmth if needed) but actually, I can only just get away with light. It's darker than I expected but at least it is yellow-toned, I've wasted a small fortune over the years on bases that turned out to be pinky-toned.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 30/09/2011 14:52

Meant to add that their naming makes no sense, light should be lighter than fairly light IMO, but it ain't!

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 30/09/2011 14:59

Thanks, Toffee. Nice girl in Selfridges applied it all for me and I'm going out tonight so we'll see whether or not anyone notices how radiant and young I look. I expect not, given that I still look tired and feel rather sick and headachy today - but they might at least not be able to tell!

ggirl · 30/09/2011 15:22

QuinnFabray -your skin sounds exactly like mine , doublewear light slid off my face.
Am currently sporting revlon colourstay. Will be interested to hear how yours held up.

QuinnFabray · 30/09/2011 15:31

Back from school run. Had the stuff on for an hour an a half now, and holding up pretty well. Looking slightly glowy, but nowhere near the oil slick I would usually be by now, especially in this weather.

True test will be tommorrow, when I apply it first thing, without the the remnants of other crap on my skin. Will also experiment with primers etc.

I wonder how the matt version compares to the normal one?

ggirl · 30/09/2011 15:38

does it not sit in your pores ?

QuinnFabray · 30/09/2011 15:41

Oh, and a point about the primer. It's just the same ingredients as any other silicone based primer, so if you're using BE because it's more natural and better for your skin, the primer will not fit in with that.

QuinnFabray · 30/09/2011 15:41

ggirl, no it really doesn't. Buff buff buff.
