Is anyone else planning to quit smoking in the new year?

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 10:33

I'm going to give it another try at quitting smoking in the new year. My DC hate that I smoke and I hate the way it makes my health. Added to the fact I actually can't afford to smoke I think it's time I kicked the habit. I will be using a vape though as previous attempts with this seemed to last a lot longer than patches and going cold turkey ect. Anyone want to join me new years day in trying to kick the habit?

@Dollymac Don’t worry too much about how much liquid you’re getting through. Just vape what you need to keep the cravings away. Many of us find that we drop nicotine strength naturally as time passes so the volume stays the same but the nicotine reduces.

I vape between 3-5ml a day in my mouth to lung setup which is broadly similar to the nautilus. If I use my cloud machine I’ll get through much, much more. 3ml might last an hour.

How are you getting on with the rejuiced liquids? Any recommendations?

Dollymac · 23/01/2019 13:00

Yes @Jins that's exactly what I'm going to do. Already dropped to 12mg. I have about 20 10ml bottles to use and then I might order the next one down and see how I go. I've only tried a couple and really love the vanilla custard that you like and also unicorn tears is amazing. This is the description,

A delicious mix of ripe strawberries, custard and a touch of cheesecake with a mouthwatering creamy milk on the tail end.

A huge hit with customer taste trials in the shop.

I've been vaping these for a few days now and decided to try a fruity flavour and they all taste horrible. Even ones I know I like which is strange. Strawberry jam is nice as not as fruity (don't know how lol)

Great to see everyone doing so well! You’re all brilliant!

I love this for cool fruity liquid, although it’s not cheap and I get through a lot of it in my cloudy vape!

Hoping to hear you’ve got past the 3 week mark @Dollymac

Dollymac · 28/01/2019 17:33

Yes @Jins. I made it ☺ Haven't craved the past few days so hope I'm turning a corner. Looking forward to 4 weeks now! Thanks for asking about me. Hope everyone else trying to quit are doing ok too.

@Foxbox I think I'm gonna stick with mouth to lung rather than a direct to lung as I'd probably spend a fortune on liquids. I want to try and save as much as possible. Got about 6 bottles of liquids to get through and then I'll order the nicotine level below 12mg, not sure what it is.

🥳 🎉🎊🥳🎉🎊

Fabulous news Dolly!!

Huge well done to you, I’d say you’ve turned a massive corner.

You’re probably right about the mtl. I do spend far too much, although not as much as I used to on the fags. I think 8mg is the next step down. I’m still on 12mg in my mtl vape, 3mg in the dtl one.

Great going, keep up the good work, I reckon you’ve cracked it Smile

Jins · 28/01/2019 19:48

Flowers Dolly! Well done!

I’m still on 12mg in my MTL vape - sometimes 18 if I find an old bottle. 3 or 6 in my DL. Whatever works at the time.

Mixing has saved me a lot of money. I made 500ml of virtual custard for about £30 last month

TaighNamGastaOrt · 28/01/2019 22:31

Great news Dolly!! well done! I'm 3 weeks in and not too bad! Day 23, cravings aren't too horrid, no lozenges, the heartburn is still bad and I am a wee bit snappy! But no fags!
4 bottles of Prosecco and a fuckton of chocolate instead

Everyone at work and DH and DS have colds and coughs and I haven't! I haven't had any headaches or sinus pain since I stopped either!

How are @Cleffa and @Threeminis doing? And other pps? I hope you're doing well!

Also I'm so not up to speed with vaping jargon, but Jins, virtual custard sounds lovely Grin

Jins · 28/01/2019 23:01

Virtual custard is gorgeous. My favourite custard vape

Sadly unavailable in ready mixed bottles

Threeminis · 28/01/2019 23:12

Doing great at this end. Managed a night drinking without the vape. Although, on another note I have noticed reading this thread back that I drink far too much! Every weekend I've been on the sauce Blush
(In my defence, this weekend we had friends over who live hours and hours away and we haven't seen for over a year - no excuses for the other weekends though)

I'm not really clued up on the vape chat either, I guess because I hate it so much?

Glad to see everyone else is still going. I'll be 4 weeks on Thursday.

Jins · 01/02/2019 09:04

Vape chat must be very irritating for those who aren’t vapers - sorry Blush

I look at it as just another way to give up smoking. The trouble is that it’s not a magic bullet. There are so many variants involved that sometimes it takes a little while and experimentation to make it work for the individual. Sometimes it’s just not the right thing for someone as “Threeminis” has found.

In the past I’ve tried cold turkey and NRT both prescribed and OTC. I’ve tried patches, inhalers, gum, lozenges, acupuncture, hypnotherapy and Allen Carr. The only thing that has stopped me smoking is vaping and even I don’t think it’s the answer for everyone.

I think that this thread is very inspiring. Look how many success stories will come from it. Flowers

Threeminis · 01/02/2019 15:02

The vape chat doesn't bother me at all, to be honest, I will probably keep one close when I'm drinking as it has helped.
I can totally see how they can help people, for me it's more about the actions of smoking - going outside, hand to mouth etc. The vape does fill that gap when I'm drinking.

I'm now at 30 days.
Happy (non smoking) weekend all!

pineapplebryanbrown · 02/02/2019 17:22

Hi everyone - can I join you please?

I'm on day 2 off the fags. I'm using 10 motives fake fags and finding it not too terrible. I hate that I have to give up but not as much as my kids hate me smoking so - oh well - I've had a good run at it. I'm really sleepy and craving orange juice, anyone else find that too?

TaighNamGastaOrt · 02/02/2019 19:30

Actually Jin, I found the vape chat interesting-I honestly had no idea of the custard flavours and many different types of vaping thingies!
Besides, as you said, vaping is another method of giving up smoking. It works for a lot of folk I know! Do you mind if I ask how you found hypnotherapy? just curious! nosy
Nice one threeminis, I'm at day 28! Found I have eaten rather more than normal but not really thinking about cigarettes anymore! my habits are changing to avoid fag breaks!
Welcome @thighofrelief101 please do join us. I hated giving up too but it has to be done! Keep going, it does get easier after the first week. I was grumpy as hell and thirsty but not for OJ! Grin

pineapplebryanbrown · 02/02/2019 19:39

Taigh thanks for the welcome! I'm teetotal so i think OJ is the most exciting thing I have in the house. What made you give up? I have a very significant birthday coming up and always swore I'd be off the fags by then.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 02/02/2019 21:09

Ah, see I've just celebrated a significant birthday too-28 days ago!! I always said I'd give up a that age and I was just ready. It was something I had to do for me. And my wee boy-don't want him to copy me!!

What made you give up? Grin

pineapplebryanbrown · 03/02/2019 21:53

Taigh sounds like you're doing really well! My youngest son (adult) has been begging me for years to quit. He forced a promise out of me and made me swear on his and the dogs lives. I can't go back on that now!

I'm 50 in March and i think I've had a really good run with the fags. Sooner or later we all have to quit.

Jins · 04/02/2019 08:54

Welcome thighand well done. I have had a similar good run with the cigs although I had no pressure from family. I think they’d given up hope of me stopping

Taigh I didn’t find hypnotherapy terribly helpful and it certainly wasn’t a long term success. It was the same with Allen Carr - a couple of my friends said it was life changing but it didn’t work for me.

I was convinced I was the only smoker in the world that just couldn’t give up. So many of my friends had given up and I just couldn’t - whatever I tried.

Vaping really has changed that for me. Once I got the hang of the technique and found some flavours I liked it completely replaced smoking in terms of nicotine delivery and hand to mouth habit.

I don’t think any method works unless you have a compelling reason of your own to give up. The first weeks are so hard and you really have to push through cravings. Replacing the nicotine is the easy part of it. Beating the psychological addiction is the tough bit.

I’m sure I’m still addicted to nicotine but I’m handling that addiction in a much safer way.

pineapplebryanbrown · 04/02/2019 09:05

The thing i am finding hardest is having lost my "best friend" we have been together since i was 13.

Jins · 04/02/2019 09:14

A best friend that was there for you throughout all the tough times as well.

Yep. Know that feeling very well.

I’ve no advice though I’m afraid. It’s part of the tangle of addiction that you will find your way through in time.

pineapplebryanbrown · 04/02/2019 09:28

I'm using 10 Motives fake fags and find the fagness of them quite satisfying with drawing in nicotine and exhaling a cloud of something.

Dollymac · 04/02/2019 13:15

Welcome @thighofrelief101 well done on achieving your first couple of days smoke free. I'm on 4 weeks smoke free now and found it to be ok this time round. I am using a vape though.

Today however has been a bit strange. I'm sat here thinking about smoking and how much I miss it. I'm thinking about how I've gained 9lb in 4 weeks and how I hate it. I'm thinking about how the vape isn't giving me the same relief a cig would. What is wrong with my brain! I'm picturing myself on holiday drinking nice cocktails in the sun and smoking. Not a very helpful post to those struggling but I suppose we will all have good and bag days at some point on the journey.

Dolly i feel your pain. We have to remember the flip side and use those thoughts to chase away the wistful ones. Remember the fear of having to explain to your DC that you are finally buggered. Due to smoking. I don't care about the smell or the cost, but i don't want to leave my DC behind prematurely.

pineapplebryanbrown · 04/02/2019 14:08

Dolly you are doing so well at 4 weeks that it's probably your addiction having a last gasp attempt at keeping hold of you.
