Is anyone else planning to quit smoking in the new year?

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 10:33

I'm going to give it another try at quitting smoking in the new year. My DC hate that I smoke and I hate the way it makes my health. Added to the fact I actually can't afford to smoke I think it's time I kicked the habit. I will be using a vape though as previous attempts with this seemed to last a lot longer than patches and going cold turkey ect. Anyone want to join me new years day in trying to kick the habit?

For the first time in about 30 years I haven't had a cigarette this morning. I've been vaping and I've not felt the craving or need to have one. I'm quite pleased with myself. Well done to all those who've managed not to smoke

Stardustinmyeyes · 01/01/2019 17:36

I should have added to those who have, don't write yourself off just try again tomorrow

Littlechocola · 01/01/2019 19:21

I’m starting tomorrow because I knew that I would be feeling fragile this morning!

TaighNamGastaOrt · 03/01/2019 11:30

Well done Stardust and DollyMac!! thats great! I didn't intend to start on the 1st, what with festivities and being away. My start date is today.
So here I am. at work, with all my smoking buddies.
Didn't have time to prepare, so I have no niquitin or nicotine replacement. Am cold turkey!
Shit. I have got Haribo and all the christmas chocolate for comfort tho. I can see me getting to be a fat bastard! Albeit, a fat bastard with clean lungs!!
How are you all doing? Have you managed 3 days smoke free?

Jins · 03/01/2019 13:37

Two years ago I was starting out to be a non smoker. In four days time it will be my second smoke free anniversary.

Thank goodness for vaping as all my other attempts failed

Dollymac · 03/01/2019 21:27

Evening all, had a good day yesterday with vaping but then today I've craved all day long and had the odd cig. About 12 not smoked though so that's gotta be worth something. Well done to all attempting. I'm in admiration of the people who are trying or have stopped cold turkey. It's such a hard thing to do and takes real mental strength I think. Hope you are all doing ok. If not tomorrow Is another day. It was never going to be easy.

Little steps Dollymac! its bloody hard! I managed none at work (what the fuck do non-smokers do on their lunch??) but rolled one after work and smoked half of it before throwing it away in disgust! Fuck.
Thats a great start Dolly, half the battle is breaking the habit!
Have to say i'm a grumpy bugger without it, definitely going to pick up niquitin to ride out the next few weeks.
Good luck, tomorrows another day! I'm not going to give up!

expatinspain · 04/01/2019 11:54

28 hours cold turkey and going strong. I've had cravings, but they haven't been that bad. I haven't been for a number 2 yet, which always happens when I quit. It's usually the thing that makes me start again. Does anyone have any suggestions to get through the constipation stage??

Penninepain · 04/01/2019 17:33

Expat - no expert (i was brilliantly successful with Champix), but is it worth using the herbal laxatives now and then?
I DO kniw what it feels like to be bunged up and its horrible, not wanting to get you into a new bad habit, but for a little while cant hurt.

You are all doing brilliantly!

Jins · 05/01/2019 11:13

Two years tomorrow!

Nearly 6K saved. Big improvements in health. Treasury deprived of £4+

Keep going everyone, however you do it. There’s no right way to give up

Ahardknocklife · 05/01/2019 11:23

I'm in my 6th week, cold turkey. I used an app called easy quit stop smoking, this have me the health benefits. Good luck all. I'm determined to quit for gold this time. 6 months was my 2016 attempt to quit.

Dollymac · 06/01/2019 11:39

How is everyone getting on so far?. I've had a good couple of days. Today I've already smoked 2 cigs though so I'm now going to chain vape and hope it helps with cravings. I never knew that a side effect to stopping was constipation. I'm already suffering with this due to medication too. I'll have to up by fibre intake.

Well done Jins on 2 years today. It's amazing the amount of money that is wasted on smoking isn't it. I feel queasy thinking about how much I've spent 😢

I just want to say well done to everyone kicking their cigarette addiction on here, and send my encouragement for you to continue.
I’m a retired doctor, who used to anaesthetise the diagnostic bronchoscopy list for picking up lung cancers. I still remember one awful Christmas Eve when all six patients turned out to have tumours.
50% of smokers will die as a direct result of their habit, and the rest will suffer ill health.
Every day you spend smoke free starts to reduce your risk - and save you a small fortune to spend on much healthier treats!
Good luck to all of you on here - you’re doing great things, not only for your own health, but as role models to your children. You can feel proud that you’re no longer normalising addiction for them to follow.

Dollymac · 06/01/2019 15:07

Thank you babdoc. Some great reasons for motivation there. Must have been terrible for you at times. How silly is it that we can put ourselves through this. Actually pay to put ourselves through this. Addiction is a horrible thing.

OP posts:
Babdoc · 06/01/2019 17:07

Nicotine addiction is a particularly tough one, Dollymac - it can be harder to kick than opiates. And a lot of people use it to treat their stress, anxiety or depression, so are psychologically hooked as well as chemically. I don’t underestimate the challenge you’re all facing, and I hope you’ve all got lots of support and encouragement IRL too. Believe in yourselves and you’ll get there!
Take delight in denying evil cigarette companies your money- spend it on life instead of slow death. Good luck, all.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 06/01/2019 20:42

Great to see you're making progress!
expatinspain I take my hat off to you, I tried cold turkey and failed! so grumpy on it, even only on 3 rollies a day!
Thanks Babdoc, a reality check if ever i needed one! I have depression, anxiety and on anti'd's so am struggling to find a way of coping with stress that doesnt involve nicotine.
I have failed so far-Dh threw a surprise party for me last night, so I had 3 cigs (I was a bit tiddly!). Woke up this morning determined to try harder. bought niquitin lozenges today-one of those was enough to see me thru today!
Heres to another week trying to figure out life without nipping for a fag! Good luck and keep going! Grin

ImaSandyGirl · 06/01/2019 21:16

I'm on day 6 of going cold turkey. I've smoked since I was 16. I'm now 42, so that's 26 years altogether. Have tried and failed to quit many times. The longest I haven't smoked is about 10 months due to pregnancy (stopped just before and during). This is going to be tough. I have a love/hate relationship with smoking. I love the feeling of smoking, but hate all that comes with it - the health risks, tight chest, lack of fitness, the cost, the smell, the worry, the guilt, standing outside in the freezing cold, the feeling of being trapped... The list goes on! Just taking it one day at a time (or one minute at a time if necessary!) and trying to keep really busy.

Dollymac · 06/01/2019 23:12

taigh I'm the same in regards to anxiety/depression and on ads. Smoking is my coping mechanism.

So far I've managed to not smoke since my first post today. Not feeling too bad right now. Had my dinner and was a bit lost afterward as I normally go outside for a cig.

OP posts:
Dollymac · 06/01/2019 23:15

Well done sandy you're doing amazing so far. Almost a week without. It is a real mental battle too isn't it. Having to keep your mind as well as yourself occupied so you break the habit.

OP posts:
ImaSandyGirl · 06/01/2019 23:38

It sure is Dolly. Well done for not smoking today! I suffer from depression and anxiety too and am on anti-depressants. Just like you, smoking was my coping mechanism. I've been ok today, but this evening, I felt a bit depressed and was worried about things in my life. I really wanted to smoke to badly, but managed to resist. I'm having to re-learn how to deal with negative emotions without the emotional crutch of a cigarette and it's very hard. I keep telling myself that it WILL get better in time.

Ollivander84 · 06/01/2019 23:50

I smoked 30 a day, and started when I was 12. I'm 2 years 9 months without a cigarette now thanks to vaping

Threeminis · 06/01/2019 23:52

Hi everyone, can I join??

I had my last cigarette on the 2nd. I'm really determined to do it this time. Have smoked on and off for almost 20 years. The only times I've properly stopped was when pregnant and bf.

Well done to you all, keep going!

Threeminis · 06/01/2019 23:53

I'm loving the success stories too, that'll be me next year hopefully

BlueEyedBengal · 07/01/2019 00:37

I did it 18 yrs ago on my own and never went back. Not easy but life is so much better without them. Find something like crocheting to occupy your fingers though. Wishing you all success.
