Is anyone else planning to quit smoking in the new year?

I'm going to give it another try at quitting smoking in the new year. My DC hate that I smoke and I hate the way it makes my health. Added to the fact I actually can't afford to smoke I think it's time I kicked the habit. I will be using a vape though as previous attempts with this seemed to last a lot longer than patches and going cold turkey ect. Anyone want to join me new years day in trying to kick the habit?

I'm trying again. It's an annual tradition. Lasted till April this year. Vape definitely helps, I've cut down to a few 'real' ones per day.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 30/12/2018 12:54

Yup me. I've a milestone birthday tomorrow so I promised myself and kids that I'll stop. down to 3 rollies a day, planning gum, minis and possibly vape. I;ve stopped in the past when pregnant but I always restart!
Looking in to smoking cessation classes too-my local Boots do them so i'll give it a proper shot this time!
good luck OP and PP! heres to a healthier new year!

I have to stop smoking because I had a stroke 2 months ago.
I’m using a vape and it’s very low nicotine, I don’t get the cravings and anger when I can’t smoke because I can fiddle with the vape
I wouldn’t call myself a non smoker yet.
I’ve decided to change the language I use about smoking. I’m not saying I’m trying to give up because that implies that I’m depriving myself of something good. I just say I’m trying to stop.

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 16:13

lichtie that's good. At least you know you can do it for a long period. My longest was 3 weeks using the vape and I still had cravings whilst vaping a high nicotine one.

Taigh Good luck to you too. You've done well to cut right down so far. I wish I could say the same. I'm on about 15 cigs a day.

stardust sorry to hear about the stroke. My sister also had one and stopped smoking. She still does use a vape though and she says she found it so easy. Everyone is different I suppose.

me...got my blu vape thingy ready for tuesday :-)

Littlechocola · 30/12/2018 16:15

I’m with you! I have patches and an inhalator.

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 16:16

I have my old vape at the ready and fully charged with some new iquids too and a new coil. I think I may just wake up new years day and start vaping and see how I go from there. I may try downloading the app so i can see health benefits each hour/day. Good luck to you all!

I gave up 4 weeks ago using a vape.
Best advice I can give is use Nic salts rather than normal eliquid
They give you a more cigarette like hit and stop the craving

makingmiracles · 30/12/2018 16:18

YUp. Going back on champix as found it so easy to stop with that, the nausea is bad for the first week or two but it wears off after that. Already done a course with dr so buying it myself from chemist.
Hate the money spent on it, hate the smell, hate the cravings.

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 16:20

Excellent!! The more the merrier and hopefully we can share our tips and tricks. I think it's easier when doing it with others to spur you on and give one another encouragement. I'll be using my eleaf with a mini nautilus and I have some sweet strawberry liquid in 18mg nicotine. May buy a few more liquids tomorrow so I have a variety in.

Me, and I'm going to go cold turkey as nothing else has worked so far!

Highginx · 30/12/2018 16:25

Bite the bullet OP. Go cold turkey. As long as you have a nicotine substitute you’ll always want more. Good luck!

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 16:34

I have tried once going cold turkey and failed miserably. I read Allan carrs book and thought I'd never touch another again. Within 24 hours I was back on the cigs. I've tried patches, gum, vape and champix. I had terrible side effects off champix but my mum used them to stop and was successful. I think I need to lower the nicotine gradually if I'm to be successful.

I read Alan Carr about six times. The sixth time it stuck, for some reason and it didn’t register at all. That was six years ago. I still occasionally dream that I’ve had cigarette and wake up so relieved!!

TaighNamGastaOrt · 30/12/2018 17:06

Ooh is there an app? Just seem an advert on Facebook called NHS Smokefree. Opens in messenger and sends you hints and tips everyday.
It asked if I was ready. Nope, I've a day left! 😁
Going to try cold turkey without vape, just over the counter stuff.
I'm bad for smoking at work, so my colleagues are going to give me grief/support.

Hardest part will be the emotional/psychological addiction. I use fags as a crutch, stress reliever. Need to find a different way to cope.

We can do this!!

Penninepain · 30/12/2018 17:11

I gave up on January 2nd last year. I had smoked for 42 years, 15 a day. I had tried..... hmm, well, kind of tried to quit on numerous occasions. I had tried everything....or so I thought!
Got Champix from Lloyds Pharmacy online. Gulped a bit at the cost, but did it anyway.

I have not had a cigarette since. Dont even crave one. Now and then think, 'oh, I could really fancy a fag', but then the thought is gone, with no real longing.

Different things work for different people, but as a true, hardened addict, this worked for me!

Good luck to everyone

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 17:45

I also use cigs as a way of coping with the stresses of 4 DC and a busy life. It's ingrained in me. I will do a job round the house then go outside and smoke, eat a meal then go outside and smoke ect. I would try champix again if I wasn't on sertraline for anxiety/ depression. The app I am talking about is just the stop smoking app. Search for it in the app store. Whatever way we decide to quit we can do it and help eachother along the way, hopefully. My worst ones are usually the 1st one of a morning and after a meal. I will find these ones though I think.

Well done penn gives me motivation that I can also do this. I've smoked now for 18 years. I want to do it for me, my DC and my purse ☺

Penninepain · 30/12/2018 17:49

Dollymac my triggers were: 1st thing in the morning, after every meal, when I had finished a job or when i was just pissed off with the world 😁

Good luck - how you do it does not matter. Champix was a miracle for me personally - you will find your own way!

Ni58 · 30/12/2018 18:01

I was a heavy smoker for 15 years.
I suddenly decided to quit on the 3rd January, so nearly my first anniversary.
I was hungover, stressed and I ended up smoking a massive amount in a 24 hour period. I felt absolutely horrific. It completely turned me off smoking and I was repulsed at the thought of smoking for the first 48 hours. Then, I was a nightmare to live with for about 10 days. And then it suddenly got easier and I felt like the routines were being forgotten...
Cold turkey. Haven’t touched one since. Not complacent about it though!
Good luck! You can do it!

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 19:26

Are you me penn??? 😁 Thank you for your inspiration. I hope to say the same as you this time next year!

OP posts:
Foxbox · 30/12/2018 19:40

Just wanted to wish you all good luck! It’ll be the best thing you ever do for yourself.

I switched from being a heavy smoker to vaping 6 months ago with fabulous MN support here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/substance_addiction_/3270217-Smoking-to-vaping?pg=1&order=

there’s some top tips on the thread if you’re thinking of switching to vaping.

I never thought I’d do it yet here I am. I feel so much better. If I can do it so can you. Rooting for you all Smile

Dollymac · 30/12/2018 23:25

Thank you Fox I was on that other thread with you. Tried a few times since then and could never stick to it. I've 're read that thread over the last few days for inspiration. Well done you on being smoke free for 6 months. Amazing achievement when you think back to the 1st day I'll bet. I only hope that this is me too come next year!

OP posts:
Foxbox · 31/12/2018 10:37

This time Dolly! You can do it. I agree with PP about nicsalts being more satisfying. Use the techniques and tips we were given before- count how many you haven’t smoked, keep your routines the same (that one helped me anyway) and chain vape as much as you need. I reckon I was’used to it’ after about 4 weeks. It’s a big change, so don’t beat yourself up. If it were me I’d smoke myself silly today so I’d be feeling less like it by tomorrow!

You can do this x

Dollymac · 01/01/2019 16:57

Thank you Fox and well done to you. You've done great!

How has everyone got on today? I must say, today has been a complete write off for me. I've had the mother of all hangovers and went to use my vape 1st thing and it was so sweet it made me feel even worse. Not a great start but I'm not going to beat myself up. I'm going to start tomorrow morning 1st thing. Good luck everyone!
