Is anyone else planning to quit smoking in the new year?

I'm going to give it another try at quitting smoking in the new year. My DC hate that I smoke and I hate the way it makes my health. Added to the fact I actually can't afford to smoke I think it's time I kicked the habit. I will be using a vape though as previous attempts with this seemed to last a lot longer than patches and going cold turkey ect. Anyone want to join me new years day in trying to kick the habit?

Threeminis

Well done, good for you

Jins, very true about smoking adding to the stress levels, thinking and planning when you can leave the company to have one.
Stopping smoking frees you from this
I spent some time this week with my son and daughter-in-law. I had no cigarettes with me so I vaped every now and then. I didn't feel under any stress at all. My DS said several times he didn't think he'd ever see the day that I stopped. I've been smoking for 46 years and he's only 40 and he definitely has a point but I think I'm doing ok so far.
Keep up the good work, it's for your benefit

Dollymac · 12/01/2019 21:51

Thinking of buying another vape as I don't feel too safe having just the 1 as I've dropped it twice already today and can feel the battery wobbling inside. It still works fine mind. I have a eleaf istick with an aspire mini nautilus tank. Should I get another one of those I wonder or a different one. This one is goes to 5.4v 15.9w (whatever that even means). Is there a better one I could buy I wonder?.

If you’re still happy with the nautilus mini then just get another mod.

The aspire pockex is worth a look for a portable set up for out and about. Uncomplicated little thing but performs better than the price suggests. Quite a useful spare.

This is a really good kit. myepack.co.uk/kits/innokin-smartbox-kit-black.html You need to buy an 18650 battery and external charger though which bumps the price up a bit.

My favourite mod is the istick pico. Original Eleaf 75 W IStick Pico Kit E-Cigarette Starter Kit - Grey with EFEST 3000mAh Battery www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076LZ8WMH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xwMoCb5HWDYW8?tag=mumsnetforum-21 The tank that comes with it is a sub ohm tank for cloud chasing but it powers the nautilus well enough.

Dollymac · 12/01/2019 22:20

Thank you Jins that last one was the one I was actually looking at but I wasn't sure whether a mini nautilus tank would fit onto this. It's all very confusing to me but i do really like the one I'm using now so would like one similar or even better so i stick at it.

OP posts:
Jins · 12/01/2019 22:23

Yes it fits well. I used that with the mini nautilus for ages. I still use it every day.

There are some good reviews on YouTube but ignore the clouds the reviewers produce SmileSmile

Dollymac · 12/01/2019 22:51

Excellent, I will treat myself to one I think. Plus better to have another in case something happens to my trusty blue one 😊

Just make sure you keep the wattage down. It’s been a while but I think it initialises at 75w when you put the battery in. You need to set it around 11-12w with your nautilus and then increase it if you feel you want to. 16w was my upper limit for nautilus coils.

Dollymac · 13/01/2019 13:31

I will do jins thanks for the great advice as always. My current one is on 13.6w but I prefer it on 14w but noticed my coil burnt out on day 6. 7 days 2 hours smoke free so far and 141 cigs not smoked. That's shocking!

Fabulous achievements!! Grin

And weekends can be tough to start with so you should all have a huge pat on the back for getting through this one! It’ll get easier too.

Great advice and ideas from Jins as ever. The NHS should think about employing you to help people quit! You’ve helped so many of us here, me included Smile

Jins · 13/01/2019 16:05

Ah you’ll both be helping others next year! It’s all about paying it forward. I learned from earlier threads so now I’m helping where I can Smile

It’s such a minefield and there are so many hobbyists in vaping that sometimes it can be really tricky to get advice on kit that’s a step up from starter kits.

I know nothing about pod systems but my local vape shop is pushing them to newbies. Next year there’ll be something different again.

Ollivander84 · 13/01/2019 16:15

I use an eleaf ipower with a mini triton which I love. It's a top fill tank which makes life easier!

Jins · 15/01/2019 09:12

I’d forgotten the ipower. It’s a good option as it’s got a huge built in battery. I think I’ve got a rose gold mini triton kicking around somewhere actually as one turned up in a kit when the pre TPD sales were on. It was around the time I was switching to rebuildables so I didn’t really give it a proper go.

I’ll have to have a cull at some point. I’m pretty sure I’ve got one of the 5ml nautilus tanks unused and still in the box as well. Blush

Despite a couple of cases of shinityitis I’ve still spent a lot less than I would by smoking.

Hope everyone is still doing well. I read somewhere that it takes three weeks to break or make a habit so not long to go for the Jan 1st quitters

Dollymac · 15/01/2019 14:02

Interesting @Jins as three weeks was the longest I went on my last attempt. The past few days I haven't even thought about having a cig at all. Only done 9 days 2 hours though so I'm expecting a hard few days to come. I ordered a small pen like vape for when I need a spare. Ended up with the innokin endura t18.11 v2 in rainbow. That came today and I must say I really like it. Feels really smooth. Also ordered a sample pack of 100ml worth of juices off rejuiced. Hopefully that'll last me a bit now as I've got about 6 bottles here too and ordered another 3 for 5 to try. I'm not allowing myself to spend anymore money now till I need new juice 🤣

Jins · 15/01/2019 16:29

Best laid plans and all that eh Dolly Smile

The latest T18 gets good reviews on the FB group I’m on. Seems to be a popular one for out and about. I had the earlier version and it was ok but not great. I think most of the manufacturers have paid some attention to their starter kits now and they are much better.

The rejuiced sample pack is a good way of seeing what flavours you might like. I’ve vaped a lot of their vanilla custard in my time

Dollymac · 17/01/2019 21:19

Just checking in. How are you getting on @Threeminis ? Had a tough day today. Not really craved but thought about it a bit. Used my vape lots too. Currently have a very sore throat and a dry and scratchy cough. All worth it in the end I suppose.

OP posts:
TaighNamGastaOrt · 18/01/2019 12:23

Good to hear you're doing well @Dollymac, hope your throat gets better soon. Hope Threeminis doing ok too. You seem to be getting right into your vaping Dolly, hope it works for you-my colleague is a huge vaper. But then ruins it by immediately having a fag!!
I'm managing on just the lozenges so far, day 13 of going smokefree. have to say I'm a bit crabbit still but feeling pretty good about it.

Dollymac · 18/01/2019 13:34

Great Taigh Good to hear your still going strong too. How are you finding the lozenges. My mum swore by them as I said. That's how she quit. She did become addicted to them though so switched to vaping. She was getting hers from home bargains really cheap!

OP posts:
Threeminis · 18/01/2019 17:49

I'm actually totally fine @Dollymac. Thanks for asking.
I've also joined the low carb bootcamp this week and haven't really thought about smoking. Haven't really bothered with the vape either.
However, going out tomorrow night for a friend's birthday so will take the vape with me.

Sorry to hear you had a tough day yesterday, but you should be proud of yourself that you didn't cave. Imagine how much worse your throat would fee if you had. Also, whenever I have had a difficult day in the past my 'security blanket' would have been reaching for a cigarette. You did not do that! Take each day as it comes, every day will lessen the thoughts and cravings.

@TaighNamGastaOrt Thanks for asking after me too. Day 13.. amazing. I haven't tried the lozenges but my friend swore by them when she stopped a few years ago.

Threeminis · 21/01/2019 23:49

How is everyone going after the weekend? Second test for me on Saturday night but I stayed strong.

Cleffa · 22/01/2019 00:02

Can I join? You're all doing amazingly well, congratulations!

I've gone cold turkey and aside from half a cigarette on Saturday night I'm two weeks smoke-free.

Did consider a vape but had no idea where to begin. I wouldn't mind one for nights where I'm having a drink though as social events are when I miss smoking most. Can anyone recommend one?

My DP smokes and although he has told me how well I'm doing, has no intention of stopping himself which makes it harder!

Jins · 22/01/2019 08:41

Hi Cleffa and congratulations.

I think we all find social situations where we’d normally the hardest for quite some time. It’s even harder when a partner smokes so I can see why you’d find a vape attractive.

The thing with vapes is that they deliver nicotine but they aren’t a complete substitute for smoking. You get far less nicotine per puff and they work best being used little and often to keep the cravings away. As you have almost certainly rid your body of most if not all nicotine it seems a shame in some ways to think about vaping.

Having said that it would be even more of a shame to start smoking again and the risk of doing that from the occasional one is very real. You can pick up basic starter kits very cheaply (eg pound shops) but they aren’t much good. A decent starter kit would be the aspire pockex or the innokin T18 and you can use that with zero nicotine liquid but I wonder if one of the new pod systems might be just the thing if you envisage using it to replace social smoking. The my blu starter kit is occasionally available for £1 on the website but I think it’s around £10 in Tesco and other shops.

So I guess I’m saying to try to hang on because you’re so close to being through it but picking up a vape is definitely better than the occasional cig. Good luck

TaighNamGastaOrt · 22/01/2019 22:02

Well done Threeminis! usually with me its drink in, wit out! not looking forward to my next night out! do share your secret! (were you sober?)

Welcome Cleffa! i'm on Day 17 (I say that in the voice of the Big Brother voiceover guy!) and I went cold turkey with the assistance of the Niquitin lozenges. Havent used one for a few days, so hopefully not addicted to them! I've considered vaping-I used to have a wee e-cig! I wouldn't know where to start tho. Thanks Jins! I wonder if its worth buying a vape for back up/emergency situations.
I do still have a pack of baccy/papers/filters in the kitchen. can't seem to throw it away!
Hope you're doing ok @Dollymac? still vaping?

Threeminis · 22/01/2019 22:48

I took a vape with me but to be honest, it was actually ok. Was drinking too! I know this sound really cliched but I honestly think I am just "ready" not to smoke anymore

Threeminis · 22/01/2019 22:49

Also, I really, really hate vaping

Dollymac · 22/01/2019 23:06

Hi all and welcome @Cleffa. Great advice from Jins as always! I agree that if you do decide to vape then 0 nicotine is the way to go for you. It's hard the 1st month I'd say going off what others have said previously. Keep going and keep posting if it helps.

I'm doing ok here. Still using my vape a bit. Using about 6ml of liquid a day. Don't know how bad that is?! 17 days tomorrow for me now. Edging closer to the 3 week period where I caved last time. I've had a few cravings thr past couple of days too. I just vape and they go away but very annoying. Especially after a meal. Well done Three I think you've cracked it. Also Taigh No lozenges is great! How do you both feel? I'm a bit edgy and snappy but could be AF.
