Thanks @SpongebobNoPants - on the plus side, it's given me free range to refer to her openly as Cruella Deville 😂 (obviously not when the children are with us before I get jumped on by any first wives clubbers 🙄)

DH and I get this all the time. Anything nice we do is met with sarcasm and criticism from the mum. It's not our fault they are up to their eyeballs in catalogue debt!

Just remember that you being what they want isn't the only thing that matters. Don't get sucked into revolving your life around just that, remember that being treated like you don't matter is a common outcome for step parents and you need to remember to protect yourself.

Seen this plenty of times. Guess what. My adult stepchildren don't hate me because they had to share a bedroom when they visited, they completely understand why we couldn't afford a mansion to live in.

Oh I needed this today, I've received alot of these 'cards' on a current thread in the form of replies. Thank you OP for highlighting how ridiculous these people are.

Just to pre-empt if anyone says/thinks they could fill a thread with all the horrible things that SMs have said or done. I'm sure you could.

But:

a) we're not them (mostly - but we'll call it out if we do see it)
b) this is the step parenting forum so we're here to post the issues we encounter from our POV just like people posting on all the other parts of MN
c) we don't need constant projection in the name of "advocating" for the other side - societal expectation does that on the other side's behalf already. In fact it's at the root cause of many of the issues we face.

Step parents aren't special - we fuck things up too. But if anyone can explain how "you knew what you were getting into" is genuinely helpful in any way shape or form to a SM struggling with a specific issue, I'm all ears.

These are brilliant. I definitely need one reminding me I'm only DP's "new girlfriend" despite the fact we've been together over 6 years and have 3 children together his ex still refers to me as the "new girlfriend"

DH was told by his child's mum that under no terms was I to get a Mother's Day card form my DSC as it was seen as being disrespectful to her!

I get one every year....
