I've had, in real life but I'm sure it will be on MN, 'If she wants to be a parent, she should have her own children'. Cheers for that, I'll consider it in 10 years when I feel ready.

@Hillary111 Exactly! I have at no point tried to be a parent to my DSD. Yes, I will sometimes do 'parent' things, like make sure she doesn't cross a road without looking! But that is just being a responsible adult.

Ooof. @SpongebobNoPants that last one is a little close to the bone. There’s an element of truth in that, depending on the man I guess and how tied up he is in trying to get to see his kids more.

It was a factor in my ending my relationship with my ex. Felt like he lived for the weekends with his kids and the rest of the time was just surviving. Completely lost his zest for life. So sad.

@sassbott luckily my DP doesn’t feel this way and acknowledges that our lives neither have to stop or be miserable when the SCs aren’t around

But I think it’s probably only really funny if you recognise the sentiment which is aimed at you as a SM on this board.

Although I am indeed only DP’s girl friend. Which is the only way to protect myself from the nonsense that separated parents so often get themselves tangled up in (and which is frequently perpetuated by parents with no experience of blended familiy complexity & the no-win situation it creates for step mums).

Be warm, be friendly, but don't get sucked into getting carried away doing stuff for them in an effort to prove you're not the evil stereotype. There's a certain poster on this board who insists it's because we're trying to prove we're better than the ex - that certainly wasn't the case for me. I was just trying to show the DC I accepted them! But it soon spirals and resentment swiftly kicks in as your DP gradually forgets that everything you're doing is a favour not an obligation.

Stay as fun auntie! I can't stress that enough. If it gradually evolves naturally into something more, great. But don't fall into the trap of picking up parenting duties where his ex left off - that way misery lies.

Stepmothers should be seen to clean but never heard to say a stern word.
