Is anyone enjoying the start of the new season?

Well it looks like the game is on. Hope so, anyway, but a shame about the weather; the forecast is not good. I'll be there anyway, and also for the women's Grand Final on Sunday. Hoping Wigan can make the double this year! 😀

Hope it's a good match! Wonder if Derek is watching from home?!

Cheers, nowty! I expect he'll be there. Adrian Lam must be cursing him. Weather still vile here.

Turned out to be more about the wind than the rain, and the pitch was fine. So safely through to OT, and I have my tickets already! 😀50/50 shout tomorrow, I think, even though Saints are considerably undermanned.

Yes the pitched looked great considering all the rain.
Yes hard to call tonight. Should be a good match. After that finish last week nothing would surprise me with this Saints team.

Formby · 04/10/2025 12:31

Enjoyed the game last night. Free flowing rugby from Leigh in the first half, running hard forward with the ball (take note wire).Wigan had the experience and defence to claim the win.
Also can’t call the game tonight but feel home advantage may be key.

Martin Gleason , Wire attacking coach, has left through ‘mutual agreement’.

duc748 · 04/10/2025 13:09

What do you make of that, Formby? Gleason is generally well thought of.

Formby · 04/10/2025 13:45

I think it’s now a case of watch this space.
I don’t think this would have happened without a replacement in line and hopefully someone who will be instrumental, although this is wire 🤞

So tonight to the Women's Grand Final, on home turf for the Wigan team (although they seldom play in the stadium). And great to see them earn a victory by 16-12 against their rivals St Helens, in front of decent crowd of 5000+. I am so proud of my sport and my team, who are absolutely doing things right as regards proper inclusion of women in sport, where too many other sports are failing. What a great example to all the young girls watching.

duc748 · 05/10/2025 21:25

BTW, anyone watch the NRL GF this morning? What a belting contest that was.

I watched it. My DH and DS wanted Melbourn, I wanted Brisbane! Great match.

Sirzy · 11/10/2025 20:30

Well done Hull KR. Just in the car on the way back and they deserved that win!

Formby · 11/10/2025 21:27

Well that’s it then.
Well done HKR. Great achievement to win the treble.
Who will Wane pick to play in the halves, that’s what I’m wondering? Man of Steel, Smith, Lewis or Williams who hasn’t played since his injury a few weeks ago but I feel Wane favours him.

It's got to be Lewis surely?

duc748 · 17/10/2025 00:04

@Formby What do think about Steve McNamara coming to the Wire? Personally, I think it's a good move, even though I don't have a lot of faith in SB.

Also, what a whole stitch-up this whole 'enlarging the SL and giving Bradford a free passage' business is. The people running the sport in this country are both bent and stupid; truly, the worst of all worlds.

Formby · 17/10/2025 12:15

Well that’s all the teams in super league announced now. Sad to see the loss of Salford for now.

Think SM will be a great addition to our coaching staff and perhaps succession planning. SB has made no secret of wanting to return to Oz.

duc748 · 17/10/2025 13:21

The RFL sat back and did nothing when Salford were bought up by dodgy foreign interests, who clearly weren't interested in the rugby club at all. Whilst at the same time making sure that their pet favourites Bradford were safely installed. At least they've stopped short of blocking Toulouse, which feared they might. But I think increasing the size of SL is a big mistake anyway.

LaraRED · 17/10/2025 13:49

Very sad day today. What a mess of bias and...oh I don't know...’corruption’.

duc748 · 24/10/2025 12:37

Everyone going to settled on the sofa for the First Test tomorrow? Sadly these international games come round so seldom.

Formby · 24/10/2025 13:29

Looking forward to these matches.
Would have liked to have been able to watch ‘live’ but more than content to watch from home. Go England!

duc748 · 24/10/2025 13:39

I actually got a ticket for Wembley, but unfortunately for personal reasons I won't be able to attend.

nowtygaffer · 25/10/2025 15:20

England doing well so far. Come on lads!

duc748 · 25/10/2025 16:33

Class tells in the end. Very disappointed to only manage one consolation try.

I know. They were so much better weren't they?

duc748 · 25/10/2025 22:49

The worst of it is, it's limited what Wane can do now. Welsby was terrible (Saints fans, with some justification, blame Wellens for that, continually moving him around for his club), and surely has to be replaced, presumably by Brimson. And probably replace Lewis with Smith. But we were so out-gunned in the forwards (even Wigan fans didn't think Havard should have been in the squad) that I suspect it will matter little. I agree with those who say, nothing will improve until the salary cap is removed or increased substantially.
