Is anyone enjoying the start of the new season?

HKR are a tough side to beat. Especially as they are never on-side, and seem to get away with a lot without sanction from the officials, especially Magic Mikey, who is a right grubby little git. Like last year, we approach the business end of the season with the firm impression that HKR are the RFL's anointed faves. Wire didn't get a thing from Moore (who is awful), but, saying that, HKR were the best side by a distance, and deserved the win.

Leeds disposed of in a very pleasing display last night. We now face HKR in the league, tricky selection decisions with the Challenge Cup Final following.

I shan't be at Wembley, sadly, but will be cheering Wigan on in front of the TV, hoping we can put the charmless Magic Mikey and HKR back in their box. Fine weather should suit us, we need to run them around, but we will have to be at our best; they are a good side.

Did anyone watch State Of Origin 1? I just watched it now (didn't know the result), what a contest! If you can catch it, it's well worth a watch.

Good luck on Saturday.
i went last year and was obviously disappointed at the result but maybe Wigan will do it.

Thanks! I can't imagine what it's like for the young lads Jack Farrimond and Noah Hodkinson; they've have never imagined that they'd be playing in a Challenge Cup Final. What a moment to have in your life.

While back I watched the highlights of Wigan Women's great win in the CCF last year, and now they are there again, with a chance to do the same, and it pleases me so much that we have thread here on MN, cos our sport's attitude to women's inclusion and support in sport is one of the few things we've got right lately! Rugby league people know that a woman is.

So shocked and saddened to hear the news about John Kear. A true legend of rugby league. So sad for his family and friends.

duc748 · 01/06/2026 17:25

Only 71 too! So sad.

(looks nervously over shoulder)

And he was such a great primary deputy headteacher and class teacher too. Amazing human even before his RL career.

Well, naturally, I'm delighted. Another strong performance, and no sign of a Wembley hangover, and the young lads stood up well, and showed their skill. but a tough test awaits at Wakey, who showed what they all about today.

duc748 · 12/06/2026 23:05

Three post ment, as we used to say. But so proud of my team after another excellent and entertaining performance against a decent Wakey side.

And well done Sir Kev! At last! Whadda guy!

Formby · 14/06/2026 12:47

Excellent news about Sinfield and well deserved.

I watched the game and it was a great performance.

Can’t believe our league position and with 7 first teamers out injured currently it’s really unexpected but so good! Pundits predicted 8th place finish for us. Wonder if George will ever play for us again and will he be fit to play in World Cup? Saying that, our young halves are doing well in his absence.

duc748 · 14/06/2026 14:00

Irwin looks a talent, you need to hang on to him. Frankly, Saints are poor (and slow) at the moment.

duc748 · 05/07/2026 23:14

What did the panel make of Magic Weekend so far? Saved the best till last but blow-out scores do not make for a great spectacle. Saints/Wigan did very much live up to the blood-and-thunder predictions, though. So proud of our young lads, but dread to think what kind of a team we can put out next week; it may be a pyrrhic victory.

Formby · 06/07/2026 08:42

Enjoyed the Saints v Wigan game. Like a close contest with plenty excitement going on. Overall enjoy the concept.
Hoping we (Wire) can hold onto the top 6 but feel it’s slipping away with 11 players out it’s a tough ask.
Big Sam choosing to play players deliberately out of position and ignoring other squad members is poor management. Rumour has it he’s getting a two year contract extension too!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 06/07/2026 08:46

It’s good to have the Leeds Bradford derby back

duc748 · 06/07/2026 10:11

I haven't changed my long-held view about Burgess, @Formby. I don't think he inspires confidence.

duc748 · 11/07/2026 08:30

Very good win, so proud of our young talents! O'Connor is just amazing, never seen anything like him at his age. And they all scored tries! But we couldn't have done it without Harry Smith. Without Bevan French and Jack Farrimond and now Jai Field, he has really upped his game.

Formby · 11/07/2026 12:03

Was great to see young players from both sides giving their all.
Dubious ref and video ref calls.

Irwin has 'future England player' written all over him.
