England v Australia - gonna be tough against the crowd

It will, but I was there tonight and it felt like the whole of Colombia was too! They were very raucous, constantly standing up, screaming for a goal when they had the ball and booing when we had it.

They were much worse than the Oz crowd at the Denmark match!

At one point tonight (when they were leading) I actual said that I wouldn’t go on Weds if they were playing! Fortunately they aren’t, and even if we don't win on Weds, I think it will be less embarrassing to lose to the hosts than to Colombia!

I am not even sure that we will be the favourites, which will maybe take some pressure off us.

England are obviously not the same team without Williamson, Kirby & Mead and in this tournament they haven’t looked or played like European Champions, but Wiegman & the players deserve enormous credit for their ability to just find a way to get the result. Sometimes in sport, that’s enough, and it was today. Well played, ladies. 👏👏👏

That's it in a nutshell. Champions grind out wins.

I love reading through all the comments afterwards!

Amazing day. What to say about France? Underperforming again. Sticking with tactics that weren't working, playing too slowly. Australia seemed a bit nervous at the start but they harnessed the crowd's energy and defended excellently,. They were less potent on the left than usual but Foord was her usual tenacious and energetic self. Penalties are agony to watch.

I'm starting to get the feeling the trophy has England's name on it. Nigeria was so tough but good practice for this game. Once again the Lionesses have come through.

And now I have to wait until Tuesday for more of this. Aaargh!

Dancerr · 12/08/2023 19:25

Omg...was in edge of seat for the Australia v France game.
I think England have a chance to win

When does Lauren James get to play again?

megletthesecond · 12/08/2023 20:46

I think Lauren can play in the final (or 3rd place play off). Although I don't understand off-side so don't quote me on that.

Is there ever added time to the added time? Or do you know when it's really over when they finally get to the end of added time?

Yes, there can be - and in this competition there usually is.
If there is an injury, or if they consider either side to be time wasting, in the "time added on", then they extend the "time added on"

BellaAmorosa · 12/08/2023 21:10

Yes, the time added on is supposed to be a minimum.

BrunchBunch · 12/08/2023 21:14

That must be stressful for the players, not knowing if it's really done when the whistle goes! They must surely announce they're adding it on a minute or two before it ends though, rather than when one team thinks they've won, and then get told no, play an extra two minutes now.

BellaAmorosa · 12/08/2023 22:21

In the final minute of the regulation 90, the fourth official (the one who stands in front of the dugouts) holds up an electronic noticeboard showing the number of minutes that will be added on and the stadium announcer announces it.

UsingChangeofName · 12/08/2023 22:52

It isn't really stressful, as of course the players are only estimating the time they have played (7mins? 8mins? 9mins?). At that stage in a cup game, every minute feels like several minutes if you are winning. But you always want a few more minutes if you are losing.
The same principle applies in a Youth game or a Sunday League game, but the players just keep going "How long ref?"
Ultimately, you just know you play until the final whistle blows.

BellaAmorosa · 13/08/2023 04:39

I'm so sorry, @BrunchBunch, I didn't read your post properly. Ignore mine.

First semi final, Spain v Sweden

Brefugee · 15/08/2023 09:20

I'm torn now. I want England to do well, but i have all-day tickets for the European Hockey championships on Sunday and don't want to miss any of those matches trying to find somewhere close by showing the WC final.

Strange to see the cold and rain and dark whilst watching here on a dry, sunny morning.
I mean, I know , factually the Southern hemisphere is in Winter and night time, but it is still odd to be watching it Grin

DuncinToffee · 15/08/2023 10:27

ooh close for Spain
