The best team won on the day.

England should still be proud of their achievements. Sometimes the other team plays better. There is no shame in that. Taking Russo and Daly off didn’t make sense to me though.

Delighted for Mary Earps - hugely deserved.

One negative. And I’m probably alone in my opinion. I don’t think LJ should have played a part in the final. Her tournament should have ended with her actions. The way it has been glossed over and excused has been so wrong. I just think that a clear message should have been sent that this isn’t acceptable and youth and a moment of madness isn’t a reason for leniency.

That said, she is young. I believe she has so much ahead of her and she has the potential to be magnificent. Her actions shouldn’t be pinned to her forever but it should have been the end of the tournament for her.

Anyway.

Well done both teams 👏🏼

Spain were the better team today but what the lionesses have achieved is outstanding. Very proud of them and so looking forward to watching them going forwards.

Exactly this! I hope they are feeling v proud of themselves.

littlbrowndog · 20/08/2023 14:16

Thanks for thread toffee. It’s been a great World Cup

rockingbird · 20/08/2023 14:35

Sad to see lose but Spain were the better team today. We've had a wonderful World Cup and the ladies should be very proud to have come second it what was an amazing few weeks! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤣

BellaAmorosa · 20/08/2023 14:38

It was a weird watch for me because I woke up this morning having a strong feeling that England would lose. When Mary Earps saved that penalty (where are those shirts????!!!) I thought maybe this could be the turning point, but no.

I agree with@Footyfooty above about Lauren James.

As for the ref, I thought she was fine - not my cup of tea, but the same as she's been throughout.
It's so hard listening to Alex Scott because she is so devastated but trying to keep it together.

England have had a fantastic tournament, it was a close match but Spain just are better, so it is easier to take the loss - it took a team that good to stop England. I don't think Sarina Wiegman was wrong to take off Russo and Daly, she was changing the formation and she did bring on Beth England later who is a real poacher.

Some individuals have been outstanding - Earps, obviously, Carter was sensational and has been throughout. She is a superb tackler and a clean one. Perfect 1 v 1 defender. Chelsea are lucky to have her.

The Lionesses have been amazing and we've got the Olympics next year.

burblish · 20/08/2023 14:43

So sad for England, but Spain were the better team on the day. The Lionesses have done everybody proud, though.

Aphrodite89 · 20/08/2023 14:45

A deeply disappointing result but Spain were the better side by a distance and fully deserved their win. They were also the better side in the Euros QF last year, and were tremendously unlucky to lose that match so I wouldn't be surprised if they go on to dominate over the next few years. Especially if they can find a manager who the players don't hate.

In terms of England, I understand Wiegman's plan for the match. She (rightly) felt that England couldn't win the midfield battle so compensated for that with an extra defender. You saw near the end how easily Spain were able to cut through once we went to 4-3-3. Unfortunately none of the attackers were able to produce a strong performance and consequently we gave Spain little trouble.

I fear England may enter a more fallow period in the next few years as our results in the U20/U17 World Cups and U19/17 Euros have not been very good in the last 6-7 years, which suggests there needs to be significant improvements in the academy training/pathways for young girls. The FA and Premier League have done a really good job with this for boys in the last 15-20 years, and there's been a big improvement in the men's team since those players started to grow up and graduate to first teams, so the know-how is definitely there, which makes me hopeful.

SequinsandStiIettos · 20/08/2023 14:52

I feel very sorry for Guijarro, Leon, and Pina.
Don't misunderstand me, I am pleased for the team (as I'm sure they are too) but as the only three to stick to their guns with regard to Vilda's treatment of them, it must be bloody hard for them today.

lljkk · 20/08/2023 14:56

Spain did play better today.
I'm still very pleased for the Lionesses. They did us proud. x

Footyfooty · 20/08/2023 15:05

Amen @SequinsandStiIettos

BMW6 · 20/08/2023 15:09

We can rightly be proud of our team, but Spain were deserved winners 🏆 well done both teams

girlswillbegirls · 20/08/2023 15:09

Gothambutnotahamster · 20/08/2023 13:36

No, @girlswillbegirls - the older blond lady beside the man in the Australian scarf?

Sorry! 😂

I'm delighted for my home team. But Englad did very well too. I bit my nails during all the second half!
Thanks for the thread and we'll done everyone :-)

Oblomov23 · 20/08/2023 15:09

Thanks @DuncinToffee OP for the thread. Enjoyed it all. Thought they were good, just a bit lacking, lacklustre in the Final.

BellaAmorosa · 20/08/2023 15:16

Seconded, @SequinsandStiIettos.

Well summarised @Aphrodite89 and good point about needing to close the gap with Spain. They've built and planned for this success and could dominate for an entire generation with their conveyor belt of talent.
This will raise the technical level throughout Europe, which is an excellent thing. We've caught up with the USWNT and Germany in athleticism and fitness, now we all have to catch up with Spain (and Japan, actually).

BellaAmorosa · 20/08/2023 15:17

And thanks, @DuncinToffee - great thread.

Curiouscat101 · 20/08/2023 15:17

I know emotions are heightened, but swearing from the goalkeeper seemed so unnecessary

Brefugee · 20/08/2023 15:33

Couldn't watch as I'm elsewhere (In my England shirt) and it's a shame, but women's football has come so far, we need to keep the momentum going.

I was as a Germany v England match in Duisburg about 10 years ago - fewer than 1,000 in the whole stadium, and only 4 of us supporting England. It won't be like that again.

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2023 15:46

Curiouscat101 · 20/08/2023 15:17

I know emotions are heightened, but swearing from the goalkeeper seemed so unnecessary

Is that the basis for you saying they’re not a nice group of women?

FrenchandSaunders · 20/08/2023 15:50

Fantastic group of women who all seem to get on extremely well and gel ….. fabulous tournament 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 20/08/2023 15:53

I think England did really well. Spain's youngsters are amazing, I think they said that they had won the U17 and U19 championships as well. We just couldn't get keep the ball for the first time in the WC.

I think that Spain are going to dominate the Euros and WC for the next decade or so.

I hope I am wrong.

Curiouscat101 · 20/08/2023 15:55

Just how they have conducted themselves on the pitch. I didn’t like elements of their play again today, pushing and shoving. Swearing. The Lauren James stamping incident. Need I go on.

Curiouscat101 · 20/08/2023 15:59

The England manager commenting ‘“You can’t change it any more, it’s a huge lesson to learn, but of course it’s not something she’s done on purpose.’

Of course she did it on purpose. Hard to accidentally stamp on someone. Even the commentators stated “that was avoidable.”

She knew exactly what she was doing and shame on her. Nasty behaviour from this team.

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2023 16:13

I think you are being harsh. There was pushing and shoving from both sides. It’s a rough sport.

did you ever notice throughout the tournament how the English players would offer consolation hugs to defeated opponents?

James made a mistake but does it typify/define her?

CrossPurposes · 20/08/2023 16:28

One of my favourite moments of this World Cup.

cheeseisthebest · 20/08/2023 16:36

Funny people saying about Mary Earps swearing. Jordan Pickford would do the same and she is a far better goalkeeper than him.
I think they are all great, gutted for them.
