Just how they have conducted themselves on the pitch. I didn’t like elements of their play again today, pushing and shoving. Swearing. The Lauren James stamping incident. Need I go on.

Every team in football shove and push each other, especially at corners. In men and women's football. Its part of trying to give yourself space to jump to head or overhead kick the ball into the net. 🤦‍♂️

I feel very sorry for Guijarro, Leon, and Pina.
Don't misunderstand me, I am pleased for the team (as I'm sure they are too) but as the only three to stick to their guns with regard to Vilda's treatment of them, it must be bloody hard for them today.

Is there more detail on this? Ive tried to get more info but i don't really follow what went on (other than they didn't think the set up was professional and they weren't properly prepared for matches?) Plus presumably he did change things up otherwise how would they have won?

@Gothambutnotahamster

Long thread on Vilda, worth a read
https://twitter.com/MichaelEmilio_/status/1691814334509314152?t=xQwhUSKaaXkfWuC_fyHR5g&s=19

One of the posts

Some of the complaints were:

• Lack of privacy — Jorge Vilda infamously prohibited players to lock their hotel-room doors while on national team duty with Spain.

• Lack of rest — As Jorge Vilda would rarely rotate resulting in players quickly being burnt out.

• Lack of medical assistance — RFEF would not invest properly into the Spanish WNT, causing injuries to be commonplace.

• Lack of nutritionists — Yet again a case of RFEF not prioritizing the WNT by not supplying the basic needs for top-level athletes.

• Lack of match analysis and tactical understanding

• Low quality training sessions — As players reported to have been in a worse physical shape when returning to their respective clubs after having been on NT duty.

I know emotions are heightened, but swearing from the goalkeeper seemed so unnecessary

Ah the "not ladylike" type comment.

I'm not English, so no skin in the game, but thought she played fantastic.

I watch football, at all levels every week. It's a physical game. Players need to be mentally tough as well as physically strong. Swearing is part of that. It's just words.

lljkk · 20/08/2023 17:38

how do professional footballers recover after a match?

Yeah seriously, I ask because the post-match recovery protocol is a Big Deal in cycling. And it's obvious because cyclists are often interviewed during warm down (on rollers) or do their podcasts during their massage time. Having the burden of the leader's jersey means delay in recovery actions and they all fervently see those delays as damaging. Also famous for not walking anywhere during multi-day big races, they literally moan about having to walk to the team bus. They sleep as much as possible.

On "rest" days in the middle of a stage race, the cyclists will go out for a gentle 2 hour ride just to keep their muscles loose. So rest day still involves keeping muscles loose. I see something similar for pro runners is recommended (gentle jog on rest days).

What do footballers do for recovery between matches? Only info I can find says ... eat a high protein snack ... maybe an ice bath for tennis players. It seems rather less structured than I expected. Presumably massage, showers, warm down, minimal other movement, all happen for footballers, just not as obvious ?

I don't have details but players and coaches sometimes mention ice baths and recovery sessions. I think that has been standard in the men's game for decades, but more recently the women players have had access to the same facilities and physios etc. At the top level in some European countries and in North America and it's a pretty professional setup these days.

@DuncinToffee
To add to your list, I read somewhere (but can't find the link now) that some of the players felt Vilda was not the standard of coach they deserved or needed. There was a hint that nepotism was the reason for him getting and keeping his job.

BellaAmorosa · 20/08/2023 18:00

@Gothambutnotahamster
He was a youth coach (successful, admittedly, but he was working with players are so gifted anyway) and some of the players think they need an upgrade.

The author of the thread covers that and he seperately tweeted

Both Jorge Vilda and his father gave their votes to Luis Rubiales back in 2010 during the RFEF presidential elections. This is how Jorge Vilda was appointed as the first team-coach in the first place — and since Rubiales is still the RFEF president, the federation won’t sack him no matter what.

I found this by following Anita Asante and Beth Fisher

The best team didn't win at all. The Spain players spent half the game throwing themselves onto the pitch, feigning injury, wincing in 'pain,' and rolling around on the floor. Also, the referee clearly favoured Spain. 100%.

We were robbed, we should have won, and no the best team did NOT win.

KMA2023 · 20/08/2023 18:57

Hate football and I am not English but I am devastated for those wonderful women.
They are all brilliant and hope they all get the recognition and remuneration they deserve.
Bloody marvelous.

Tv Land Pain GIF by nobodies.

The Spanish players every 5 minutes... (Half the time when no-one was near them!)

Wow sore loser. England had 90 minutes - 103 minutes actually - to score a couple of goals. They didn't even manage one. I am wondering if you are being serious TBH.

I agree with the poster upthread that the horrible stomping incident has been glossed over. Diving can be tackled by a referee and England are guilty too (Grealish anyone?). The stomping was pure agression, no ball was being played. If the roles had been reversed and an English player had been at the receiving end the British press's take on it would have been very different.

Also saw one of the English players being unnecessarily aggresive while the penalty shot was being set. No need for it, there was nothing nothing be gained. Swearing I'm not fussed about and TBH Earps can do no wrong today IMO!

All in all a great world cup, best team won on the day and both teams have changed football and women's sports in their countries for the better.

Thanks @BellaAmorosa & @DuncinToffee - seems like they had valid complaints although he also seems to have been vindicated given their win!

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 20/08/2023 21:49

The Spanish FA guy lifted the Spain penalty take up and kissed her on the lips. She obviously wasn't happy about that.

DewinDwl · 20/08/2023 21:57

Yuk. Hope the slimeball gets fired ASAP

Just heard that the Spanish player who scored the winning goal lost her father today. How shocking. Poor woman.

Actually I do agree with @WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff to some extent. After the Spanish penalty was saved there was a lot of wasting time over “injuries” on their side yet the English player who hurt her head just carried on playing bandaged up. A couple of fouls weren’t awarded England’s way either. The time wasting by the Spaniards meant any chance England did have of gaining momentum and scoring a goal was minimal and the Spaniards knew this.

Having said that, the Spaniards weee the better team overall and the energy of their players was amazing, but let’s not discount the above.

Creep.
Calculated insult. Sexual assault, basically.
