Weather is gorgeous on the south coast, hotter than Greece, but I'm in with all the curtains drawn.

Watching Everton, Leeds, Leicester and Villa, got my dad round so we could have all the games showing together. He is a Bournemouth fan so wants them to win to get 13th.

Like the Fireworks Everton!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/05/2023 17:52

This feels so tense! Glad to not be playing against either side fighting the drop just cause..feel a bit mean if send them down!

AndNobbyDancing · 28/05/2023 17:56

Gutting that Saints appear to have found their form

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/05/2023 18:06

Yeah! Maybe it's the playing without pressure thing but still frustrating

AndNobbyDancing · 28/05/2023 18:21

No, they can still throw a lead away.

Nervous few minutes for Everton-10 mins injury time

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/05/2023 18:28

Shame Brentford miss out but good for Villa!

AndNobbyDancing · 28/05/2023 18:29

No Europe for Spurs. Lovely goodbye from Moura.

AndNobbyDancing · 28/05/2023 18:50

Congratulations Everton, actually a bit gutted for Leicester. And the sight of the Leeds fans did get me.

Prediction for next year is Leicester back up but Leeds midtable and Saints a battle to stay up.

Absolutely loved sharing this season with you all, a crazy season, dubious VAR, crazy sackings (and employing delusional nobs, that cost us millions) and a relegation battle to the wire. Glad that none of those that came up last year went down, think Hodgson was impressive and glad that Dyche got to finish a battle.

Love that Howe has had a chance to show what he is capable of, impressed with how ten Hag has revitalised Man Utd. I loved watching Haarland, find it funny to see where Chelsea and Tottenham have ended up, love that the top six has been mixed up. Enjoyed seeing 🎶We're Top of the League🎶 and that it wasn't a foregone conclusion.

In summary bloody loved this season and can not wait to start the 23/24 season* with you all.

*at least it is easier to get Championship tickets.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2023 18:59

I am exhausted and feel kind of numb. So sorry for Leeds and Leicester fans, but so relieved it wasn't us.

Great post @AndNobbyDancing I'm sure the Saints will be back.

So glad this season is over, not sure how Spurs managed to even get to 8th tbh. I've enjoyed watching Fulham and Brentford more than them. Lovely goal for Moura to sign off with though.

The 1st Bundesliga was exciting yesterday. Some of it went to the dying seconds of the matches - Bayern pipped (useless) Dortmund in extra time.

Today in the 2nd Bundesliga similar - the Hamburg Fans were on the pitch celebrating 2nd place and automatic promotion (played a relegated Sandhausen) when it was announced Heidenheim had 12 minutes added time. They pulled back bring 2-1 down to win 3-2 and get Promotion as champions, Hamburg must play Stuttgart to see who stays/gets promoted to the first division.

Meanwhile I'm bricking it and am convinced Wednesday will bottle it tomorrow.

This thread has been Brill. Thanks all

So leased for you @DuncinToffee I really don't know how you coed with the stress today.

We went to the Emirates today. It was the most relaxing game ever.

Btw my keyboard isn't working oerly hence the *

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 28/05/2023 22:16

Also, so sad about Xhaka leaving. He left in style with a brace to show us what we will be missing.

Brefugee · 29/05/2023 08:09

Many a tear was she'd when he left us.
Our captain and 2 other players left. There was a pre-match presentation (a frame full of photos etc) and so on. Do English clubs do that?

Yep, last week at Anfield (last home game of the season), four Liverpool players who are leaving as free agents this summer were given a guard of honour onto the pitch at the end of the match and were presented with mementos such as a frame of photos. It’s a nice way to recognise their contribution.

I'm not sure as most players don't leave until after the end of the season. Even Xhaka's departure wasn't officially acknowledged.

Play off final between Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, will seem strange if a team getting 96 points does not get promoted. Earlier in the season when discussing things with the Ipswich fan I know, both of us thought Sheffield Wednesday would be top and it be a battle between Plymouth and Ipswich for second place. How wrong we both were.

burblish · 29/05/2023 10:13

@LlynTegid I agree, I always feel terrible for teams who have been way ahead of another in points in the league table then lose to them in a play off. Sheffield Wednesday’s massive total would make it such a bitter pill for them if they don’t beat Barnsley today. If it’s even half as fascinating a match as the Championship and League Two play off finals were, it’ll be a cracker! Just please not penalties again! (Has there ever been a season where all three of the Championship, League One and League Two play off finals were settled by penalty shootouts? One to ask the Guardian footie knowledge feature perhaps!)

burblish · 29/05/2023 10:21

@MustTryHarderAndHarder That’s a very fair point - unless there has been an official announcement that a player will be sold or hasn’t signed/been offered a contract extension, you don’t usually know they are leaving until after the end of the season. That’s why Sadio Mane didn’t get the official send off last season that Firmino (sob!), Milner (double sob!), Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain did this year. @Brefugee - for the reason MustTryHarderAndHarder explained, a public send off on a match day is less common in England.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 29/05/2023 11:46

What are we going to do without football for the next couple of months?!

That was a bit of a mad season. I just looked back to the first thread and my hopes were that we'd be pushing City and Liverpool (!) a bit closer, so I think we can say it's been a successful season for us. But the way we ran out of steam after leading for such a long time does make it feel like a disappointment.

I guess now we have the joys of the silly season, where every agent who wants a move/improved contract for their player will link them to Arsenal. They do this because they know Arsenal never comment on transfer speculation, so they can get away with it.

I hope Xhaka doesn't leave, as we're going to need squad depth, but at least he's leaving as a hero rather than it looked at one point.

Arteta needs to get some quality reinforcements to bolster the squad. He also needs to allow himself to trust them and rotate the squad more, so we're more likely to have his favourites available for key games, especially with European competition. I'm glad Reiss Nelson has signed a new contract - I assume he has been given assurances of more game time, as I think he's earned it.

Sources are saying that Rice is a done deal, which I would be happy with. I guess we'll see what happens...

Brefugee · 29/05/2023 11:53

I've long said the English league play-off system is a shit way not to be promoted if you're 3rd. In my book (and i have said this every year since they were introduced, including years when Wednesday aren't affected) it should be 3 up and 3 down and that's it. I'm not particularly keen on the German version but i find it slightly less galling. (3rd worst upper league plays 3rd best lower league over 2 legs)

Our 3 players are out of contract. The captain is winding down his career (he is a fabulous player and a fabulous man all round - we will really really miss him) and going back to his hometown club and will probably work towards a coaching career there. He announced this a few weeks ago, although we all knew it was coming. So a big send-off (and it was huge) was good and proper. The other two also out of contract and won't sign, and have been being booed by (not me) a lot of fans. They both got a fairly good send off.

Xhaka came back to our stadium the season after he left - i think Arsenal had played the day before - and got his send off then.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 29/05/2023 13:18

@YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue

It's less than a month without football as the women's world cup starts on 20/7.

I hope you are right about Rice, but we thought we had Mudryk until we didn't. I can't see WH selling him without a bidding war.
