Anyone up and going to watch the dressage? I thought I’d start a new thread for the next few days of eventing.

What happened to the Dutch riders? I was looking forward to seeing them jump (Dutch family, and I like the orange jackets!).

blobby10 · 02/08/2021 10:16

How are you guys watching the eventing jumping? I've got iplayer showing BBC1 but jumping not on yet despite being scheduled originally for 9-9.45! I guess it wont be 'live' by the time the Beeb show it?

squashyhat · 02/08/2021 10:20

It's been on the red button but they've just switched to bloody track cycling with no British interest. And gymnastics on BBC1 Angry

squashyhat · 02/08/2021 10:22

Back on red button now

blobby10 · 02/08/2021 10:50

Found it online at last! Got it playing on my PC at work - very grateful for my own office this morning Grin

Not a fan of Oliver but well done to the team as a whole!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/08/2021 11:13

Can I ask about the scoring please? I understand that this is the qualifier for the individual Eventing medals as well as the final for the Team (that's why non-Team eventers jumped in it).

I presumed that penalties would get reset back to after the XC before the individual final? Otherwise you'd have two lots of jumping penalties. But they're showing an updated leaderboard.

Tuliptulip · 02/08/2021 11:25

No idea about the scoring I’m afraid but just wondering if the iPlayer coverage missed Laura Collet’s show jumping round? We were watching, it went to gymnastics and next thing we knew Oliver Townend was on!

Heyha · 02/08/2021 11:30

I'm just watching it back now and had the thought- the eventing riders must have so much more luggage than the other disciplines with three distinct outfits and presumably three whole sets of tack (maybe parts of bridles the same for each phase). Never occurred to me before 😂

Yes - whoever’s in charge of kit, equine and human, has a lot of responsibility. So much to remember and all of it necessary (though I suppose at a push kit could be borrowed).
FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/08/2021 11:47

Top 25 go through to the individual round and all penalties are carried forward, they don’t get reset.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/08/2021 11:56

I don't know if I'm explaining very well... just for simplicity say everybody picked up 0 penalties in their best event, 1 in your middle and 2 in your worst, then that seems like those who are worst at jumping would be disadvantaged?

Because it gets counted twice? Or because the penalties are lower it works out about the same weight as the others?

I wondered whether they have to take all their washing home, or whether it'll be done in Japan.

They showed all three British rounds and quite a few of the others
1990s · 02/08/2021 12:00

Oliver was last to jump, about eight riders before him, after the gymnastics?

Have seen a few people say they're not keen on Oliver and just wondered why..?

Kittii · 02/08/2021 12:15

I was wondering the same thing.

Heyha · 02/08/2021 12:39

He has a bit of previous for being controversial and quite outspoken in his opinions. But more importantly had a season a couple of years ago where he had whip use warnings which are pretty unusual in elite eventing, I think he lost some (but not all) of his sponsors at the time, for context. I think the polite way of saying it is that he wants his horses to be as competitive as he is and rides them accordingly without necessarily always taking their full capability and willingness into consideration... However it seems there's been less of that of late, I haven't seen any cross country but haven't seen any negative comments about it in passing either so perhaps that's a thing of the past now.

Thank for you that context, totally get it now!

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/08/2021 12:44

I think he's a superb rider and Thomas and him clealry have a fantastic bond.

LIZS · 02/08/2021 12:52

Bbc seem a bit behind but Eurosport 2 showing second round now.

Naaaaah · 02/08/2021 12:58

He's an interesting character. Very divisive. He's struggled to shrug off his previous behaviours and has never been forgiven in some quarters. Quite the boy aswell, which again has given him a bit of a name! He's ridden a blinder though in these Olympics.
