Anyone up and going to watch the dressage? I thought I’d start a new thread for the next few days of eventing.

I just love that the riders get abandoned and it’s all hands on deck to look after the horses.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/08/2021 00:28

BBC are doing a lot of talking and not much showing...

I liked JJ on Strictly, but I'd rather see the event than him!

JacquelineCarlyle · 01/08/2021 00:34

I agree - JJ is an awful presenter. No idea why they're using him as he's woeful!

Polkadotties · 01/08/2021 00:37

I’m watching on discovery + Lucinda green has been excellent at commentating

Yes me too. She's excellent Think I'm going to bed though and will watch in the morning with a coffee
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/08/2021 00:38

It's a very pretty course. Can somebody explain how many different routes there are through it please? Somebody just took a longer one apparently, but don't they all have to cover the same amount of jumps etc?

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 00:39

Some jumps will have alternatives which may be slightly less technical but take up more time

Polkadotties · 01/08/2021 00:41

There will be 2 options for some elements of the course. The alternative element will be easier (smaller jump, less jumps, easier lines etc) but will take longer

Honeyroar · 01/08/2021 00:42

The alternatives are usually easier but it’s difficult to make the optimum time if you take them. But there are usually more novice riders at the Olympics so they need the easier alternatives to be safe.

Thank you. That makes sense.

It doesn't help that the BBC keep jumping between riders, which lets you see a bit of everyone but doesn't help with working out how the course goes from beginning to end!

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 00:43

The coverage isn't amazing tbb

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 00:49

Interesting that the Swedes have subsistuted a rider for Ludwig Svennerstsl
She takes his dressage score and a 20pt substitution fee

He put on Instagram that the horse wasn’t feeling 100%
Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 00:55

Yes I know but this substitution rule is new.

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 01:12

Barely any footage of Laura collet

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/08/2021 01:12

I hope this isn't a distasteful question, but the speed they're sending them out at, if there was a serious accident ahead would they just have ride past?

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 01:12

No! They'd be stopped by a fence judge and they'd have to wait

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/08/2021 01:15

And then the time re-starts when they can get going again?

I was wondering because the Thai man didn't seem to be getting up, but there were at least two others already started. Laura Collet must have got past him though? Because she finished before the hold.

Polkadotties · 01/08/2021 01:16

Corrr what a brilliant piece of riding through the water!

Honeyroar · 01/08/2021 01:16

They just had a hold on the course because of the Thai rider falling off further on the course. They stop the riders behind at designated points on the course where they can stop the time and start it again.

OP posts:
Bryonyshcmyony · 01/08/2021 01:17

Yes their time is stopped while they wait. Its a pita though as spoils your rhythm

Polkadotties · 01/08/2021 01:20

Laura being interviewed, she is just brilliant. What an idol!

GrealishHairband · 01/08/2021 01:20

That jump in the water is causing the horses some bother, that poor one that ended up stuck on it briefly did well to carry on. And Z just ploughed straight through!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/08/2021 01:22

Thank you. I really enjoy watching it, but generally only see XC at the Olympics, so after four years I've forgotten all the rules!

Honeyroar · 01/08/2021 01:27

No pressure for Tom then! They say he’s a cool cookie though.
