I'm intrigued 🤔

It's not a sore loser thing - a couple took it off straight away and kissed it - it's superstition. The only want to 'wear' the winner's medal.

TedImgoingmad · 12/07/2021 01:00

Master of the dark arts is just a fancy way of saying "cheat who gets away with it". He was not carded.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 12/07/2021 01:02

England fans whining about 'cheats' when their own team features Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane has to be some sort of record for ironic brass neckery.

FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 01:05

I mean, if some one on here posted, "Some bloke several inches taller than me just grabbed the back of my shirt and dragged me to the ground, I landed heavily on my backside, AIBU to think I've been assaulted?" what would be the response?

oh for god's sake, not everything has to be made into a Mumsnet aibu. embarrassing stuff.

Opalfeet · 12/07/2021 01:07

@VenusTiger oh that's cute..I didn't notice anyone kiss it. I was genuinely intrigued which is why I asked the q.
@TedImgoingmad wow did I say that? Why are you putting words into my mouth and then calling me disgraceful? 🙄
I said They are young men, as vulnerable as any other young person to reading negative shit about themselves on social media

You said sorry but it does kind of come with the territory

When you are a black player, the negative shit is always covertly or overtly racist. But I guess it just comes with the territory.

White player takes off runner up medal: sore loser. Black man does it: sore loser and not a proper Brit, not loyal to this country, that's why they missed their penalties.

People like you take a single incidence - taking off the medal - and blow it into a character assassination. You clearly neither understand or care to find out why they do it, or care that it is common, or care that it is not disrespectful in any way towards the other team, the country or anyone. Other people pile on, as they have on this thread, with their snide additions. For example, "You don't get this is tennis or rugby", which is code for, "middle class sportspeople don't act like these disgraceful working class yobs". Then the comments about their salaries. And on and on. And somewhere along the line, on a less moderated platform than this, their race will get drawn into it. When you start on calling them names and questioning their character, then don't be surprised when other people fill in the spaces.

@Opalfeet

Oh yes the Italian played dirty, every match I've seen them play in euro or world cup I've witnessed very similar behaviour. That at least is one of the things the England team cannot be accused of, they always seem to play fair...no dives etc.
Oh rilly?????
MountainDweller · 12/07/2021 01:28

It's footballers being childish. I watched the Wimbledon singles finals this weekend and I didn't see Berrettini or or Pliskova casting aside their runners-up trophies before they even left the court. They accepted them graciously and smiled for the press and did their interviews with Sue Barker in which they congratulated their opponents, even if they felt like crying or throwing a temper tantrum. Why would their desire to win be any less than that of the England footballers?

FootballisgoingtoRome · 12/07/2021 01:35

Bad losers

CaledonianSleeper · 12/07/2021 01:47

@TedImgoingmad I just need you to know that post is everything. And it’s IS them not us. Smile

I'm astonished you've seen so many matches as this sounds terribly like something non-supporting women have heard their husbands say.

Harry Kane in particular is a fucking terrible diver, and so was (for eg) John Terry.

FootballisgoingtoRome · 12/07/2021 03:23

England don’t dive clearly never watched the Denmark game it was a dive that won them a penalty

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/07/2021 03:31

It's still a bit shit, to behave like a sore loser.
I mean, if this were the Olympics, you wouldn't expect to see the silver and bronze medallists taking theirs off just because they weren't the gold, would you.

Oh yes you never see tennis players throwing temper tantrums, chucking their rackets, shouting at the umpire…Just last year Djokovic was disqualified from the US open for hitting a ball in frustration which hit a line judge.
lollipoprainbow · 12/07/2021 04:32

@Gooseberrypies thought that too disgusting he could have strangled him why wasn't he given a red card ??

lollipoprainbow · 12/07/2021 04:43

@MountainDweller you can't compare this to Wimbledon! They had the pressure of the whole country on their shoulders willing them to win hardly the same at all.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 12/07/2021 06:00

Not the whole country....some of us couldn't have cared less.

AnxiousPixie · 12/07/2021 06:54

Never seen it happen in the Olympics though. Bronze and silver, all the athletes are able to seem proud of what they achieved even though it's not what they wanted 🤷

Brazilianut · 12/07/2021 07:17

Perhaps because they knew the vile and disgusting abuse they were about to be subjected to for losing, especially the black players who missed the penalty.

Coffeeand · 12/07/2021 07:25

What a strange thing to care about, and start multiple threads about.
Who cares? Quote obviously, no one wants a losers medal. It’s not a silver medal. You lost a match you wanted to win. It’s not childish, or anything else you want to moan about. In most sports a ‘thanks for taking part’ medal or trophy gets given out. But literally no one wants one.

why would anyone want to wear a medal that says you’ve just lost?

namechangecovidquestion · 12/07/2021 07:25

@FootballisgoingtoRome

Bad losers
It's really sad that some people get their pleasure from putting others down in any way they possibly can.
Mandalay246 · 12/07/2021 07:27

Sore losers - and yes, very churlish (not to mention immature).

Emmelina · 12/07/2021 07:30

They’ll have put them on to be photographed, but remember they’ve just played for over 2 hours - they’re tired and dirty and heading back for showers and ice baths and whatever else.
Italy also played a really dirty game / lots of fouls! So there was probably a little bit of pee’d off at play!

magsbagsfags · 12/07/2021 07:30
@magsbagsfags what's funny?
What's funny is using the term"assaulted". What a hyperbole. He wasn't assaulted. It was wrong. He was given a yellow card.

If he was "assaulted" like when Zidane head butted Materazzi I could understand the use of the term. But no-one was assaulted.
