I'm intrigued 🤔

It’s funny how all this unacceptable behaviour is only noticed when England do it🙄

Emmelina · 12/07/2021 07:32

Also, did you see poor Saka at the end? Poor kid. The others possibly didn’t want to remind him.

@ThumbWitchesAbroad

It's still a bit shit, to behave like a sore loser. I mean, if this were the Olympics, you wouldn't expect to see the silver and bronze medallists taking theirs off just because they weren't the gold, would you.
But it’s not the Olympics, 🙈 no one cares who comes second, there’s only one winner.
magsbagsfags · 12/07/2021 07:35

@FootballisgoingtoRome

England don’t dive clearly never watched the Denmark game it was a dive that won them a penalty
Correct. But English fans only remember what they want to
lollipoprainbow · 12/07/2021 07:36

@trappedsincesundaymorn why are you on a football thread then Angry

Confusedandshaken · 12/07/2021 07:40

There are hundreds of cameras pointed at them. They don't want photos of them wearing a losers medal to be reprinted in the sports pages for the rest of their career. It might not be sporting but it's very understandable.

scrambledcustard · 12/07/2021 07:40

The took it off because they were devastated. They should have won that match.

They took it off because they were pissed off at them selves and didn't want a runner up medal.

But they should be really proud of them selves they were brilliant.

Terrazzo · 12/07/2021 07:41

It boggles my mind that playing football is meant to be good for kids - sportsmanship, resilience, respect Grin haven't seen any of that demonstrated by these grown adults!

@Opalfeet

Italy always play dirty, but I don't think that had any impact on the outcome
It's not sore losers they accepted the medal.

Italy is known in many countries for playing dirty, what a way to win hey.

Reallyreallyborednow · 12/07/2021 07:48

Runners up don't keep their medals on. You just didn't notice before because you've not seen it before because none of the previous England squads got this far

Previous England Men’s squads.

Oblomov21 · 12/07/2021 07:48

I agree they don't do it in other sports, eg Wimbledon.

morepizzapls · 12/07/2021 07:51

oh give them a break. they would of been absolutely gutted - they accepted the medals, its entirely up to them if they wanted to keep them on all night.

Reallyreallyborednow · 12/07/2021 07:51

Never seen it happen in the Olympics though. Bronze and silver, all the athletes are able to seem proud of what they achieved even though it's not what they wanted 🤷

Oh it’s happened.

Why did the England players put medals on and then take them off?
YellowBellyCat · 12/07/2021 07:57

I have a question about the cup/trophy….

Do Italy take it home and keep it for ever? So is it a new trophy every time or do Italy have to bring it back? Or do they just get presented with it and not even get to take it away?

Jobseeker19 · 12/07/2021 07:59

Why are Spain and Denmark going to play for 3rd place if people think 2nd place are the losers?

England should be grateful, those medals are the highest football achievement that we have seen in a generation.

Hathertonhariden · 12/07/2021 07:59

@Tavannach

Well, if nobody wants a runners up medal they should just stop awarding them. I thought England did very well to get to the final but they were beaten by the better team on the night. If the players don't want a reminder that they got as far as the final then don't give them one. It is really rude to take it off straight away. Churlish and childish.

England did incrediblly well and much better than expected.
The team is young and they will come back and be more successful. Players who are just 18 and 19 years of age. What hero's.
Well done lads. You did us proud.

Reallyreallyborednow · 12/07/2021 08:04

Highest men’s football achievement.

They’re not
LittleRa · 12/07/2021 08:05

If you watch, you can actually see many of them saying thank you or nodding their head in thanks towards the man awarding the medals, before then taking them off as they move past him.

There’s no third place play off in the Euros.
butterpuffed · 12/07/2021 08:07

@TiddyAndFletch

Oh, they lost then.

#football-free-household

So you're not interested in watching the match, just in a thread calling them sore losers.

Nasty.

newnortherner111 · 12/07/2021 08:10

I've read of several players who have had losers or runners up medals giving them away to someone else within a few days of the game they played in. So not surprising to me.

Though I would hope instead of giving them away they were auctioned for charity if a player did not want to keep his.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/07/2021 08:12

I haven't read the full thread but will go back and do so once I've posted this. I agree with the sentiment on the first page posted by @TolkiensFallow and @MaggieFS.
I wouldn't have thought that they should have been seen taking their medals off and if they did want to take them off, they should have done it off camera, not as they were still on camera.
