I'm intrigued 🤔

I wouldn’t wear it either. It’s not being a sore loser. It’s being a devastated loser. There’s no second place in this. They lost and they really didn’t want to. It’s the passion required to play at that level.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:26

Italy always play dirty, but I don't think that had any impact on the outcome

Because they're sore losers. As they always are.

UrbanRambler · 11/07/2021 23:27

I think it's churlish to remove it straight away, not very sportsmanlike at all.

CaledonianSleeper · 11/07/2021 23:27

They are heartbroken. The thing they wanted most all their (young) lives has just been taken from them (or they gave it away, but whatever). They are sad and hurting, and they don’t want a medal, they wanted to win. So that’s why. They’re hurting, not churlish.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:28

You can still hurt and wear the medal until you get to the dressing room though?

Forget sore losers they were men who hurt their pride. Felt sorry for Saka crying his eyes out. How would you feel losing on your own land?

Hellocatshome · 11/07/2021 23:28

Pretty much all losing football teams in finals do this it is disrespectful. When my son was playing under 11s cricket and lost a big final they did this and the coach went round and put everyone's medal back on them and told them once they were in the car on the way home they could do what they like but while they were wearing the kit and watching the winners receive the trophy they had to wear them.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 23:29

No, we are not ‘all agreed’.

They accepted the medal, they congratulated Italy. They just don’t want it hanging on their necks right now because they’re gutted. They don’t chuck them in the bin. There’s no sore loser in that.

CastawayQueen · 11/07/2021 23:29

It's the done thing in football... in football there's only one winner

namechangecovidquestion · 11/07/2021 23:30

Not sore losers at all.

It is because only winning counts and they want to win, they have passion. They did rally well and fell at penalties, young men, well done to all of them.

TiddyAndFletch · 11/07/2021 23:31

Oh, they lost then.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:32

It's just disrespectful. They should show they are the bigger men by keeping them on.

Yep and all they get is criticism from people who probably never have the passion to win.

They are hurting. So what if they take a medal off. Some people just love to criticise everyone.

I hope the press don't rip him apart, he is a very young man. I'm still feeling sad for him the reaction could make or break him.
Why put 2 very young players on an experienced in the firing line.

BorderlineHappy · 11/07/2021 23:32

It's that attitude that makes nobody get behind them.

TheDinosaurMum · 11/07/2021 23:33

@Marmite27

DH said it’s because they didn’t want a losers medal. I thought it was very disrespectful.

I also always wonder when they get the box for it? Whenever they’re shown at auction, in collections etc they’re always in a box?

Same for knighthoods, military and Olympic medals.

Military medals if sent to battalion are always presented in the boxes. They have a sticker on the back with the details of the person being awarded them. Someone then hands them out. Because they come a fair while after returning from tour.

If the Queen is putting a VC on you though you are given the box after to go home with.

Same for MBE's and stuff.

EmeraldShamrock · 11/07/2021 23:33

*an experienced team

Horehound · 11/07/2021 23:33

Because they are sore losers. Because they didn't play well enough to score any more goals on 2+ hours of the game and acted like babies.

Hth.

Wimbledon is so much more civilised in comparison.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:34

@BorderlineHappy what attitude? I was very much behind them until I realised why they were taking the medals off.

Yet here you are on a football thread.
ssd · 11/07/2021 23:34

@Opalfeet

I Googled it and they did it in rugby apparently it was a sore loser thing 🤷‍♀️
Well if it happens in rugby thats ok then
stickygotstuck · 11/07/2021 23:35

I also thought it was unsporting and disrespectful.
And ungrateful. They lost, yes, but they were runners up, better on paper at least than ALL the other teams that didn't make it to the final.

Restawhile · 11/07/2021 23:35

It’s not because they are sore losers , it’s to show they won’t accept being second best, that they want to aim to win next time rather than excepting ‘ their place ‘ is a runner-up.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:35

@ssd I don't remember saying it was okay?
