I'm intrigued 🤔

Wow 😯 really?! We were wondering about that too...aren’t they supposed to be modelling good sportspersonship to the nation? 🤷🏻‍♀️

What a load of crap. On that basis alone, I’m glad Italy won....my goodness, we must look like utter fools 🙄

TheDinosaurMum · 12/07/2021 00:40
@TheDinosaurMum You obviously don’t watch much football. Most teams do the same in cup matches. It is basically a message to the fans to say we share your disappointment. Don’t compare them them to toddlers.
I did say in my first post "must be a football thing" at 23:45 in my defence. But I agree with you, it's fine for football teams to remove their medals after being awarded. It's a football thing. You are right I'm wrong, apologies.

Hdhdjejdj · 12/07/2021 00:40

Every team does this. The Italians would have done the same. This England side have been fantastic role models and it’s still not enough for some people.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 12/07/2021 00:40

That was an out and out attack though. I agree it was shocking. He dragged him by the neck and threw him onto his back ffs. But instead of criticising the assault we've had six pages of crap about taking medals off too soon.

FA “appalled” by online racism aimed at England players
FA spokesperson, in response to the online abuse aimed at England players tonight: "The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media.

We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.

"We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real life consequences. Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse."

Perhaps, as a country, we didn’t deserve to win.

CaledonianSleeper · 12/07/2021 00:41

Just to say, Bukayo Saka is 19. Nineteen. I’m not sure what he did with his medal, I don’t think it matters - but he’s 19 and an elite sportsman and I bet his mum is fucking beside herself right now about the way english “fans”’treat their teams the moment they get anything slightly wrong.

TedImgoingmad · 12/07/2021 00:41

@Opalfeet

I mean all the kicking them when they're down etc. It's all a bit dramatic. I'm not there, I have no impact on their lives...its just a post on Mumsnet. I'm amazed it's a thing and I would have said it about any team doing it. It's just I noticed tonight.
You have no impact on their lives? There's a reason teams stay off social media platforms during tournaments. They are young men, as vulnerable as any other young person to reading negative shit about themselves on social media, posted by ignorant people like you who clearly know nothing about sport, yet tell them they are somehow damaging young children.
Blackberrycream · 12/07/2021 00:41

It’s really not the taking part that’s important when you’re at professional level.
Primary sports day maybe..

Siepie · 12/07/2021 00:41

OP and other people who think it’s disrespectful, who is it disrespectful to?

I expect the Italian players were too busy celebrating their win to give a toss about what the English were doing with their medals.

Opalfeet · 12/07/2021 00:42

@EverythingWillFallInLine I didn't watch that part, I'll admit I only watched a bit if extra time and the penalties as I knew it would come to that so just skipped the inevitable at the beginning.

4forkssake · 12/07/2021 00:42

Most teams who come runner up in any tournament where they get a medal do this. So not unique or special to England. But yet another way to dis the team. And yes, even the rugby players who normally can't do wrong. Have been known to do this.

Opalfeet · 12/07/2021 00:43

@TedImgoingmad sorry but it does kind of come with the territory

OP posts:
Skinnytailedsquirrel · 12/07/2021 00:45

I haven't read the full thread but came on hear to ask the question. I'm not English and wasn't sure to to support but the English team appeared like nice guys.

Just reading the first page of this thread it seems like they were bad losers. How pathetic is that. They have gone way down in my estimation. Even if they felt bad, (which of course they did) they should have waited till off camera.

Horrible behaviour and I'm not sorry they lost after that.

TedImgoingmad · 12/07/2021 00:47
@TedImgoingmad sorry but it does kind of come with the territory
So the racism that's being aimed at Rashford, Saka and Sancho on social media. Comes with the territory, does it? What a disgrace you are.

Horizons83 · 12/07/2021 00:47

They really can’t win can they? If they had left them on they’d have the media berating them for not caring enough and not showing the will to win by being happy accepting runners up medals.

And yes, every country does it, not just England.

I do wonder if English people are the only country in the world that hate themselves so much and immediately try to tear down anything positive.. it’s so tedious.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 12/07/2021 00:47

@magsbagsfags what's funny?

Opalfeet · 12/07/2021 00:48

@TedImgoingmad wow did I say that? Why are you putting words into my mouth and then calling me disgraceful? 🙄

OP posts:
Opalfeet · 12/07/2021 00:48

They should expect their behaviour to be scrutinised, it comes with the territory

OP posts:
AnonAnom940 · 12/07/2021 00:49

I saw that. But I thought it was just those from the squad that didn't pay that particular match that removed the medals? I was rather distracted by the baby though so maybe I missed bits!!

Hdhdjejdj · 12/07/2021 00:49

@Horizons83 Totally agree. I don’t know how some people get through the day, so full of negativity.

AnonAnom940 · 12/07/2021 00:49

*play not pay

GirlAloud · 12/07/2021 00:51

@Lunaduckdrop

The medal thing looked a bit strange, but the most shocking thing in the match was the assault on Saka when his opponent deliberately pulled him to the ground by the neck of his shirt. A terrible example of the "sportsmanship" in professional level football, viewed by millions of young people. The Italian responsible should be ashamed of himself.
Again, people who don’t understand what they are watching. 🙄

Chiellini is one of the best defenders in the world, and like all great Italian defenders he is a master of the dark arts. He knew exactly what he was doing when he grabbed Sako’s shirt. He neutralised the threat by deliberately committing a tactical foul and he was rightly booked for it. That’s part of the game.

TedImgoingmad · 12/07/2021 00:53

@EverythingWillFallInLine

That was an out and out attack though. I agree it was shocking. He dragged him by the neck and threw him onto his back ffs. But instead of criticising the assault we've had six pages of crap about taking medals off too soon.
I mean, if some one on here posted, "Some bloke several inches taller than me just grabbed the back of my shirt and dragged me to the ground, I landed heavily on my backside, AIBU to think I've been assaulted?" what would be the response? Footballers play expecting a reasonable level of tackling and other bodily contact, this was not reasonable, and the Italian player should have been red carded. Also the one who stamped on Grealish .
MistressOfEvilMaleficent · 12/07/2021 00:55

Because they were upset and angry that they lost, so didn't want an immediate reminder of their failure round their neck.

I think they did well, but they are competitive sportsmen.

LuluJakey1 · 12/07/2021 00:57

As the message above the door in the All England Club says 'If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just them same'- meaning both are false states and fleeting and you need to be able to accept and move on from both. The young team members need to learn that lesson and be gracious in wins and defeats.
