This has given me goosebumps!
Ah I like that
MrsGulDukat · 10/07/2021 18:47

How lovely!

LizzieSiddal · 10/07/2021 18:50

I’ve got goosebumps too, especially the last sentence.

If it's good enough for the Queen, it's good enough for the miserable buggers on here who want to do us (and football) down!

I am looking forward to her next two letters. Hopefully, the first being a congratulator letter to the team, and the second, the reinstatement of public floggings for the naysayers!

Or her invitation for the future Sir Gareth Southgate to be knighted at the palace?
VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 19:18

I think that would be likely if he won it.
Possible even if he doesn't.

I think it will likely happen either way. He's such a nice guy and very uncontroversial, so it would be a popular move.
VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 19:31

To be honest, I think a knighthood requires something above and beyond (but that's just me). I don't think winning a trophy should make anybody a knight.

I'm a bit old fashioned and think it's losing a lot of value. It really should be given only to those with a truly outstanding commitment to others.

JemimaPyjamas · 10/07/2021 19:32

Another with goosebumps here!
TBH I would be happy just not to get thrashed as even getting to the final is just fabulous, but I still can't stop thinking 'what if...'
I've heard a couple of people say that Italy didn't play that well against Spain (I didn't watch it) and that perhaps they are not as good as we might think. I guess we'll see - 24 hours and 29 minutes to go!!

VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 19:38

I watched Italy and Spain and I thought both teams were significantly better than England. But football is football, and in one game, anything can happen.

JemimaPyjamas · 10/07/2021 19:42

DH said that Spain certainly looked stronger out the two but, like you've pointed out, it doesn't mean the stronger will win!
I am trying to quell nerves by focussing on how good it is to be in the final in the first place, whatever happens they are at least second!

But sportspeople, actors, musicians and the like get knighted quite frequently, if their work is deemed to be a service to the British nation. Sir Bobby Charlton, Dame Helen Mirren and the like. I don't think giving one to Southgate would be out of line.
VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 20:07

I know. I just happen to think they're given out a bit too easily. That's just me!

coastergirl · 10/07/2021 20:48

I'd love to see him be knighted. I'm a little bit in love with Mr Southgate tbh. Currently watching the 1966 world cup final and it's doing nothing for my nerves!

I can't believe that we're in the final. The final! Tomorrow!

I saw that match, it was decided on penalties which is essentially a game of luck, and I think Spain were probably the better team but unlucky.
