Deciding on your next career step can be stressful! Are you or a family member debating going to university or doing an apprenticeship? Kathryn Marshall, Senior manager of apprenticeships at Lloyds Banking Group is here to help make your decision easier by answering all of your questions.

About Kathryn Marshall:
Kathryn Marshall leads on apprenticeship delivery for Lloyds Banking Group.
There are typically 1500 apprentices on programme at any time across 30 different occupations ranging from financial services to cyber security. In addition, Kathryn is co-vice chair for the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network and chairs the financial services apprenticeship trailblazer. The Apprenticeship Ambassador Network is a group of employers and apprentices who are passionate about promoting the benefits of apprenticeships.

There is a stigma to going to apprenticeship rather than university.heaven forbid if it’s a first choice rather than circumstance of joy getting into uni. How do we change that and why do you think that is?do you think it’s warranted thinking?

How long does the interview/selection process take?
My daughter has applied for a few Accountancy Apprenticeships. She's passed several stages, done online video interviews, questionnaires, assessments etc. But they all said she will hear back in 6-8 weeks.
So she's stuck in limbo at the moment, and trying to find temp work to gain experience but has little or no communication from the companies themselves.

Apprenticeship seems like such a vague term, will there always be an opportunity to gain recognized qualifications or can they just involve learning on the job?

My son is 19, and has Autism with a mild learning disability and social and communication issues. He did a level 3 Btec in technology but isn’t quite ready to enter the work force full time an apprenticeship would be a great hybrid of academia and work.
Do you have any tips on how he can get potential employers/apprenticeship programs to see with a small amount of support and patience he would work hard, be eager to learn and a great asset to their company?

Are there any targets in place for provision of apprenticeships to young people with special needs such as autism, as they are so often underemployed and yet can have so much to offer especially when appropriate adjustments are put in place?

When you say 'young people' what is the cut off age? and why would you not consider making an apprenticeship available for more mature people who might want to return to work (SAHM for example) or retrain?

my son just achieved ddd* in his Btec business and have been trying to find an apprenticeship for months . He has hearing loss. He has had quite a few interviews and got through to the 3rd round but still get rejected . What advice would you give him to help him get accepted .

Is it better to apply for an apprenticeship or go to Uni and get all the qualifications then try for a job? My child has fantastic grades and the career advisor says to take the uni route but I'm not so sure.
