This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

Checking it fits and is a suitable size for the room - nothing worse than a sofa too big or too small for the room!

The most important thing for me (other than appearance and comfort) is is it practical with young children about!

freedomofspeech · 18/08/2017 22:46

Whether it is child proof! Ie dirt, pen, scrapes etc

You need to make sure that the fabric/colour fits in with your life. For me personally having children & large dogs sofa's need to have either washable covers or be leather and dark colours.

GillianY1 · 19/08/2017 11:58

I think comfort and style are the two most Important factors

ellie17 · 19/08/2017 12:17

id say the practicality of it, is it something that stains wont show on etc

vicks276 · 19/08/2017 13:48

Non-attendee here - the most important thing is the size of your living room!

I think How easy it is to clean is on the top of list other than fitting in living room obviously lol! With a 6 year old a puppy and an 11 month old I have to regularly clean mine so its important to me that I can do this quite easily!

cluckyhen · 19/08/2017 15:59

Non-attendees - Space - for both the sofa in your living area and for the bums that have to be parked!!

Dan35 · 19/08/2017 16:35

It has to be wipe-clean!

nokkie · 19/08/2017 16:45

To remember a sofa is not something you buy every year, so it has to be right, comfy and cleanable.

JayJay1874 · 19/08/2017 17:04

Comfort. You're going to spend a lot of time sitting on it. Style might be your primary consideration but comfort should actually be the top priority.

clarabella12 · 19/08/2017 18:23

For me it's that it fits in my space and fits my family on it comfortably.

JBH316 · 19/08/2017 18:36

Non-attendee: definitely the siize of the sofa in relation to the space you have. I have a really small lounge and bought a massive 4 seater sofa - it is much wider than I thought so takes up most of the room and blocks off the only storage cupboard we have. But it's the comfiest thing in the world and I just cannot get rid of it. #noregrets

piggypoo · 19/08/2017 18:37

Non-attendee, being able to clean them properly and hoping they can withstand kids and animals crawling all over them!

most important thing to remember is will you be able to get inside your house - I've been told by the people delivering mine that this has happened numerous times!
Followed by will it work with my circumstances - kids, pets, room size etc

Compermo · 19/08/2017 19:57

Non-attendee.
Spend any amount of time to ensure that it's comfortable, and exactly meets all your requirements.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

That my laptop fits on the arm nicely (sad but this is what I base my entire sofa choice on including my last one 5 years ago from DFS)

The most important factor when buying a new sofa is to try before you buy. Looks regarding comfort can be very deceiving. You may get one cheaper online but it could prove to be a very expensive mistake.

molly57 · 19/08/2017 20:52

The sofa has got to be easy to get up from. Sometimes you sit down and then find yourself stuck and it is difficult to get back. That is because the length of the seat is not correct for your body.

SylviaPoe · 19/08/2017 20:59

The most important factor is will it cope with dogs and teenagers lounging all over it.

I always get caught up in believing I can get something really elegant - maybe one day when the kids have left home.

flozza42 · 19/08/2017 21:19

Comfort is important factor for me I have to have a comfortable sofa

My main thing would be comfort.

New sofa? Play it safe with colour / design, spend as much as you can afford for good quality materials

Jocelynne123 · 19/08/2017 22:16

Non-attendee) The colour and material is important to consider. Light colours are no good with young children and leather is no good with pets. But the most important thing is how comfortable it is xx
