This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

When buying a sofa, the most important thing to remember is what sort of memories you want to build whilst on it.... what will your family use it for and who will be spending most time on it....

For example, will you have lots of family movie nights or romantic movie nights, will you lie and read on it, have friends around to chat, will it be a second home for your dog or will it magically transform into a space ship or pirate ship or an island away from sharks.....

For me its all about washable covers as with pets and little ones its handy

francislee1976 · 17/08/2017 14:33

The most important thing to remember is to make sure it fits the intended space you want to put it. a mistake I have made before

Amarjit2008 · 17/08/2017 17:32

The most important thing to remember when buying a sofa, is the measurement of the space in your home, or the size of the room where you are looking to buy a new sofa for. I also think it's important to have a sofa that's durable, as a parent, easy to clean. For a child, made from comfortable, ethical, sustainable materials, bought from a trusted brand, that provides a great service and workmanship guarantee. Also the number of people who you have in your home, cater for visitors, and looks great while achieving all of the above.

To take accurate measurements of the room and make sure you will enjoy the space with the sofa in the room! I hate feeling crowded by furniture.

non attendee: the size of your room, will the sofa fit!

Julieguy · 17/08/2017 20:30

Comfort first and then price.

nerysw · 17/08/2017 21:00

Non-tester - will it survive my children and is it good and comfy for tea-drinking.

Most important thing function over style, both if possible - three DC and a lap dog, washability essential.

emmav6 · 17/08/2017 21:35

Non-attendee - to take your tape measure with you, they always look smaller in large showrooms!

zebedee01 · 17/08/2017 22:04

Is it comfy?
That is the most important thing to me especially with my condition which causes me chronic pain x

Beach11 · 17/08/2017 22:45

Is it actually suitable & hard wearing enough for your family life. With children 'style over function' has to be forgotten

yclark · 18/08/2017 00:21

That it is solidly built is comfortable and is within a decent price range

KJ1986UK · 18/08/2017 03:30

To make sure it fits in the room you want it in!

lorrainej162 · 18/08/2017 09:06

Non-attendee.
I think the most important thing about buying a sofa is its size in proportion to the rest of the room, and how it would fit in with other furniture.

Leanfun · 18/08/2017 09:23

Non attendee

It needs to be comfortable for you so ideally you need to try it out.

For me it's how big is it in my lounge. They always look smaller in the showroom.

rejcomp · 18/08/2017 12:44

Your wallet, or vouchers if I'm very lucky :D

MillyVanilli222 · 18/08/2017 14:08

It's definitely important to remember your room dimensions! Also, think about the colour - if you've got little ones, white sofas are a VERY bad idea!

sarahw2 · 18/08/2017 15:47

Non-attendee:

Remember to measure your room! You'll be surprised how you can over/under estimate size. Get that tape measure out!

itsali · 18/08/2017 16:02

Non-antendee.

Remember that it will not stay looking fresh and may need refreshing; does it have removable or wipeable covers?

justamoment · 18/08/2017 18:19

Non-attendee. Think for me the most important thing to remember in sofa-buying is longevity. For me that means quality and comfort are priorities, along with a style and fabric choice that I won't tire of too quickly, and that won't show up every mark - so I guess that means fabric protection!!

Loftzilla · 18/08/2017 18:36

Non-attendee: It might look like the sofa of your dreams but if it doesn't meet your comfort requirements, you should keep on looking!

StandUnderMyUmbrella · 18/08/2017 19:06

The most important thing for me in buying a sofa is, the colour - i dont need every mark showing up especially with pets and children in the household!

Also important is if its comfortable, can i lie on it, sit up on it, rest my head comfortably?

And the price value, i dont want to invest a lot of money in to something that is gonna have saggy seats, discolouration and hard uncomfortable armrests.,,,
