This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

For me it's colour and stain prevention. We bought our sofa last March from DFS when I was five months pregnant with my second baby. Our living room is grey and white so we opted for the darker grey sofa as opposed to the lighter grey and had it treated with a coating to help deter staining. We learnt the hard way first time round . . . sticky fingers coasting along the sofa, climbing all over it with snacks in hand, just on Mummy whilst she's sipping her coffee . . . that poor sofa didn't survive my first child! However our shopping tactics second time round have made it 'so far so good'!

glmcall123 · 19/08/2017 22:26

Making sure it's the right size for the room it's meant for.

TLAF · 19/08/2017 22:27

Comfort, should last for a long period of time and be fashionable and sensible price

I think the most important thing, at least for us, is to make sure it is tough enough for our needs. With young children and a bouncy dog (not to mention a cat who loves getting her claws out!) we need to make sure a sofa will last, is washable and is sturdy enough to last longer than a couple of months 😂

It must be comfortable! Plenty off room to lie on

lynwestie · 19/08/2017 23:33

That it actually fits! Seen that mistake so many times

Carriecakes80 · 19/08/2017 23:36

For us its to ensure its a good strong sofa bed, with plenty of room, yet will leave us plenty of space too! Our front room is our bedroom as we are in a 2 bed home with six of us, it can be cramped but can also be very cosy lol, and having a good sofa bed that is a great sofa for our children by day, and a great bed by night is paramount, especially as I have had sciatica, I need comfort! x

baconbap · 19/08/2017 23:54

whether you can get it into the room

The distance from the ground will a tall/short person find it easy to sit down on and get back up again after a couple of hours sat watching a movie. I always feel sorry for tall people when I see them being interviewed on TV sat on a low sofa with their knees up near their face.

diddiebiddie · 20/08/2017 01:33

Non-attendee I think it is important to check how hard-wearing it is and how comfortable it is.

how it is cleaned? whether removable washable covers or specialist cleaning is required, or is it treated /wipeable , when my 2 boys were smaller i made the awful mistake of not having removable covers and they were constantly spilling things or leaving pens on it.

The most important thing to get right when buying a new sofa is to get the size right.

The gorgeous sofa sitting in the large showroom might look perfect with all the space surrounding it. But is it going to fit in your own (much smaller) living room?

Take dimensions of the area where the sofa will be situated before buying.

We know this is essential, from our own experience!

cathryn1 · 20/08/2017 07:12

durability - espcially with my toddler- up and down all the time. Think about spillages and how it will fair

cathyov · 20/08/2017 08:01

Comfort, practicality and durability - it is going to be with your family for quite a few years so you want it to succeed on all counts!

Size firstly and then comfort. Things like is it deep enough and the back high enough are important features for me.

Butterfly1975 · 20/08/2017 08:11

Non attendee - we bought a new sofa a year ago and with both of us having back problems we wanted something with a firm, high back, not just cushions. This is SO hard to find - especially if you want a vaguely 'stylish' sofa!! Eventually found one in IKEA with the help of the MN forums Star and we've been really happy with it.

Is it pet and child friendly - so will it scratch, stain, mark and is it easy to clean.

Baby Ds threw up all over our new sofa two days after it was delivered and I was able to clean it all up no problem due to it being leather!

Apart from checking if ou can get it through the door, is it the right colour etc it is important to actually sit on the sofa and make sure it it comfortable!

castleton · 20/08/2017 11:33

I think comfort is the most important thing

Smellophant87 · 20/08/2017 12:22

The space available in your house!

The most important things are the quality and has fire retardant upholstery fabric

defairmans · 20/08/2017 15:24

Especially for people with families, durability is a major factor to consider. Too many sofas wear out with medium to heavy use too quickly.
