Had a little slip last night. Friend had bought some garlic bread go go with the Spag Bol so I definitely went over my syns as it smelled too delicious to decline.

Did manage to decline the cake and ice cream though .

No plans that will take me off plan over the weekend though so will try to keep syns to an absolute minimum.

Can anyone explain flexible syns to me please? I'm assuming that it just means that you can save them up over the week for one day?

BasinHaircut · 05/02/2016 06:43

Well done sounbelievablydull! Great first week!

calzone · 05/02/2016 07:33

Basin......yes, that's what it means though I wouldn't eat 105 Syns in one go!

I lost 3 lbs this week so am 2.5lbs to my 3 stone (again 😡)

Mummyme87 · 05/02/2016 08:04

Well done losers!

Oh is that flexible syns! I thought it was, must have misunderstood my consultant. This is good as I have days like work days when my syn intake is minimal.

Does everyone still keep a food diary after the initial few start weeks? If you do how do you do it? Keep using the SW diaries or something else. I have done three weeks worth of diaries and stopped this week but feel like this is a bad idea

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2016 08:08

That's not flexible syns...flexible syns is giving yourself an amount of syns for an event over and above your usual ones.

SW don't encourage you to save syns as it's not designed to work that way...nearly everyone does that though.

BasinHaircut · 05/02/2016 08:29

tabul surely that's sort of the same thing though? If I say I gave myself 30 syns yesterday then I can make it up over the next 3 days by having lower syns?

Or do you mean that with flexible syns you don't have to compensate?

I guess that you wouldn't really want to get into the habit of saving them up every week to completely blow out every weekend as that's not really an effective way to make sustainable changes to your diet habits long term, but as and when you need to it must be ok to do it that way.

I wouldn't want to go over syns too often without trying to compensate before or after.

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2016 09:13

Yes you don't compensate, you just give yourself a realistic amount over and above your normal ones and have them and don't stress about trying to save them up on other days.

The issue with saving them is that yes, it doesn't fit in with making a lifestyle change.

You've also got the issue of if you don't actually manage to save enough syns - then there's guilt and guilt can be a killed for weightloss, people react in all sorts of ways.

So flexible syns are about staying in control for an occasion without having to spend the whole week focussing on having less.

I totally save mine up for nights out btw, but it isn't flexible syns, lol, but then I'm at a point where if actually I don't manage to save enough for something, I no longer self sabotage because of it.

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2016 09:22

Sorry - I'm not sure that made sense, lol.

As in, if you're saving syns and can't save enough, my old reaction would have been, damn, I've blown this week, might as well really blow it.

Now I just accept that I went over and concentrate on making the rest of the week ok and forget about that bit.

BasinHaircut · 05/02/2016 10:16

Oh right, that makes sense.

So like having a night off but within reasonable limits.

It's not all about the calories it's the psychology!

cowboylover · 05/02/2016 10:44

The Flexible Syns message seems to vary group to group. I believe strictly it's exactly as Tabula said. My consultant advises some treat Syns as between 35 and 70 a week and use at any point.
There is a member in group who wasn't getting the losses she expected, turned out from her diary she was only having 10 to 15 a week and as soon as she started using more she lost again!

Yes I have a book I write everything down in, not a structured as the food diary sheets in and I always write how I'm feeling on the day or what I am doing. In the same book I write what recipes I fancy trying that week or any tips from group and do my food shopping list in to so all in one place and it lives in my handbag! I went about 2 months without doing it towards the end of last year and didn't do as well!

You will get there Calzone! I maintained this week and although disappointed it was deserved and I worked for it so with time to reflect I should be thankful it wasn't a gain.

With any loss next week I get in my new weight bracket which I have not been in for 12 years and as determined as I am it's making me nervous at the same time which sounds kind of silly! 4lb away from my 3.5 stone award after a year this week at group this last half a stone feels like it's taking forever!
But hopefully look a hell of a lot better in my birthday photos this year than I did last year which was the reason I joined the group last year after seeing them!

skyeskyeskye · 05/02/2016 10:50

My SW leader said in the first meeting, that they don't encourage you to save up syns for say, a night out, because it is encouraging binge eating or binge drinking, which is not what SW is about. She said if you go over your syns, record them all anyway so you accept what you have done, but draw a line under it and start again.

But it sounded like a lot of existing members do save them up for a few drinks on Friday or a meal out.

BasinHaircut · 05/02/2016 12:48

That's a good point skye, although going for a nice meal in a restaurant where you can't necessarily control what you are consuming so wanting to compensate, isn't binge eating really. It's just like having a small lunch because you know you are having a big dinner and controlling overall intake.

But regularly restricting yourself so you can go mad every weekend is obviously not on.

I guess most people hover somewhere between those two!

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2016 12:57

For me it's about finding a balance that works for me... I can't naturally have a nice meal with drinks and balance it out without having to think about it - or I wouldn't have been overweight to start with, lol and I'm a bit of a yoyo dieter so I have the whole guilt of eating the wrong things when I'm trying to lose weight thing lurking as well.

So either properly flexible syns or saving up a few a day works for me without me then going overboard. But no I don't do it just because, only for an event or it could lead to a sort of starve and binge cycle.

So I aim for, allowing myself to have things within reason and then compensating for the rest of the week without actually depriving myself too much.

EmilyK83 · 05/02/2016 13:13

See, I've been saving Syns. Since weigh in on Tues, I had 6.5 on Tues, 5.5 on Weds and 10 yesterday. Off out for a meal (Greek Cypriot place) with my sister tonight, and I plan on enjoying it without food optimising - we're having a set menu. I don't feel like I've deprived myself though - I rarely use Syns in meals, and save them for sweet treats in the evening!

So...today looks like this

B - none (just wasn't hungry)

L - couscous cooked in chicken stock, with chicken, bacon, mushrooms, onions, yellow pepper and chilli powder.

I have a couple of satsumas in front of me if I get peckish this afternoon - then tonight's a meal out!

FannyFanakapan · 05/02/2016 13:58

1lb off - back on track now.

OohMavis · 05/02/2016 14:10

Well, I lost 1lb. I was a bit disappointed but actually, I'm pregnant, so it's not going to fall off me and it's better that it doesn't.

No slip-ups this week!

maygirl · 05/02/2016 16:52

B mackerel pate , heB bread, tomatoes, pear
L chicken salad .(0.5 mayo)
Pear, hula hoops (6), hi fi heB2 if stick to SP, 3 syns if not ... Going for long run soon, might feel the need for some carbs after!
Dinner will be chicken, veg, celariac (or potatoes)
Snacked on some Gammon and tomatoes too .
He A milk in coffee
Tired and hungry!

Well done for this weeks losses!
mummyme I keep a food diary every day in a nice hard backed lined notebook, its useful to check back syn values I've looked up online, I can't keep track of syns if I don't record them, and I like to check my weekly total is under 105 syns if I've gone over on any days! Also can repeat menus in the good weight loss weeks!

skyeskyeskye · 05/02/2016 18:05

I'm out tonight for a meal for my mums birthday, so have not used any syns today so can use them tonight and will be careful about what I eat tomorrow. I guess I just have to make healthy choices like new potatoes instead of chips! :( depends on whats on the menu though.

I record my daily food intake on the SW online food diary which is great and helps me plan my food each day and how many syns I have had. It helps a lot to keep track of everything.

Pisghetti · 05/02/2016 20:21

3.5lbs off so that's Christmas gone! 5lbs to first goal, probably 12lbs to final goal. Bought a countdown this week so hoping I can get there before it runs out!

Today has been:
B - arla protein pot (1 Syn), banana, clementine.
L - 2 x hifi bars (HeB), pasta n sauce with extra broccoli (HeA milk)
S - yogurt
D - not sure. Maybe cheesy mash with my other HeA and Linda M sausages and beans?
