Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

We were feeding til about 9, I slept til 10.45 and then fed again until about midnight excluding nappy change and cuddles during which he let out a gigantic burp!. He stirred at 12.45 but went back to sleep until five mins ago so we are up for a feed 😊

Well I've just popped him back into his Moses basket, fingers crossed he stays asleep! 🤞

Everything is crossed for you 😊

We had a nearly 4 hour stint of sleep from 9.45 until half 1. My partner held the baby asleep on him so I could get some sleep. I desperately needed to sleep then, I'd got really tearful when he'd latched on painfully (had some latch problems previously and the idea of them coming back + lack of sleep just led to me getting quite upset.

He's feeding from the second breast now. I used my Haakaa pump earlier to express from the side he wasn't feeding from and got 75mls which is in the freezer. Then had the pump on again at the start of this feed just to reduce some pressure.

Let's hope he gets another 3 hour plus stint but I'm not counting on it. We need to work on putting him in the snuzpod for these longer sleeps, but it's a game of balance. Sleep on daddy and sleep for longer, or let daddy sleep too but wake me up sooner?

Jellybean2017 · 19/08/2017 04:29

We started off well but been up last couple of hours as he is unsettled, keeps falling asleep so I put him in crib but then he is rooting again about ten mins later. Nipples are getting sore :( hoping he will sleep for an hour after this feed.

Can I join?

My 1 week old is fast asleep on me and I just don't have the heart to try and put her in her basket cos she will wake up. I didn't have any naps today apart from 11pm-12pm so this is tough. I am determined to stay awake until husband takes over at 6am and I can get some sleep in the morning.

Please tell me this phase won't last too much longer!!

Ookmybanana · 19/08/2017 04:45

Morning all! Hi verysleepymum. Sounds like you're being a great pillow. No advice I'm afraid but sending you Brew to help you last til 6.

Slightly better night here than last night. We didn't settle til 1 but have lasted to 4.30. Nappy changed and feed being taken on the lass favourite boob without too much protest Fingers crossed for an easy resettle.

LadyNymeriaGhost · 19/08/2017 04:49

DS pooed at 1am. I may have pretended to be asleep so that DH would deal with it. Blush. Up for a feed now, then hopefully he'll go back down and I can get another hour or so before The Toddler gets up.

NinaMarieP · 19/08/2017 05:44

We've done not badly as he slept from 2 until 5.30 but the last hour of that he was getting noisier and noisier!

Daddy seems to be the preferred sleeping place for my boy too Lally, though he does quite well in his basket if I've gotten enough milk into him.

And lol at the pretending to sleep, Lady.

LadyNymeriaGhost · 19/08/2017 22:08

I'm tired tonight! Hope it goes well for everyone.

HT85 · 19/08/2017 22:58

This sounds a bit mad but this is such a nice post - my daughter is now 6 months old and this is making me miss the newborn days!! The days I wished at the time would end!! SadGrin

Lallypopstick · 19/08/2017 23:16

Good luck Lady and everyone else. Little one is asleep on my chest now - dare I move him into the Snuzpod?

Jellybean2017 · 19/08/2017 23:16

Ahh HT85 that's lovely 😊 will try keep that in mind through the sleep deprivation 😊hope everyone has a good night!

And your post made me laugh HT85 - I'll swap places with you for tonight if you want! Grin

HT85 · 19/08/2017 23:22

Haha @Lallypopstick!! The time will fly by believe me, I totally feel all you ladies' pain though! Rest up when you can xx

LadyNymeriaGhost · 20/08/2017 04:12

Grrr, DH and I are having a silent passive aggressive argument about who's turn it is to get up with the baby. We have a deal that nothing said in the middle of the night can be taken seriously, but I swear I'm going to kill him in the morning!!!

Jellybean2017 · 20/08/2017 04:56

Ahh Lady hope you're winning! I have been up most of the night. Baby is either crying or feeding 😔 knackered is not the word!

NinaMarieP · 20/08/2017 06:46

We've spent the night sleeping on the sofas again which is ridiculous because he had slept well. It was just neither or us could face taking him through to the bedroom and not sleeping...

We had an awful day yesterday, though, he was unsettled and fed on and off from 12-10.

We don't have a pact Lady, but I do try to take a breath or two so I can say things calmly to him. We haven't fallen out - yet!

LadyNymeriaGhost · 20/08/2017 07:02

All is forgiven, he got up with the toddler!

Lallypopstick · 21/08/2017 18:09

How are people getting on? Last night wasn't great, he did an extra wake up compared to usual which meant he woke for the day (eg didn't doze off during the feed) at about 6am.

Nearly a month old now and I'm hoping for some longer chunks of sleep soon, even one a night!

Jellybean2017 · 21/08/2017 19:06

Another sleepless night here! He wouldn't sleep in his crib between 11pm and 5am. We were feeding on and off through the night but he kept falling asleep during... Then from 5am he managed a couple of two hour stints of sleep in the crib, so I slept too! Haven't managed an afternoon nap today. Husband went back to work today so I have been feeling overwhelmed again, but have had some help from family and friends. Nappies keep leaking, we are in size 1 and wondering if this is a sign to move to size 2?! It's very confusing as the weight ranges overlap..!

OP posts:
LadyNymeriaGhost · 21/08/2017 21:09

Jellybean, I'd give the next size up a try. The size goes up, but so does the absorbency.
Sorry there were so many bad nights. Just to give you some hope, 9wo DS slept 10-4 and then 5-8 last night. To be fair, he had a massive poo and then a really active awake time before bed, so I think the stars aligned, so to speak. Tonight, he hasn't pooed, and he has slept most of the day, so I think we're in for it!

Lallypopstick · 22/08/2017 02:45

My little one slept from about 10pm until just now. Initially he fell asleep on my partner after I'd fed on both sides. I had a bath (so rare these days!) and assumed he'd wake up about half 11, so tentatively put him in the snuzpod expecting he'd wake up soon. But he didn't. Really hope a 4 hour stint becomes the norm. He's a month old on Wed.

He'd had a few naps from about 6pm too. Not many during the day though. Feel like I should maybe start tracking feeds and sleep just to see if there's a pattern yet.

Jellybean2017 · 22/08/2017 02:52

We have had a similar night so far Lally, managed a three hour block of sleep which was bliss. Baby was more awake during the day than usual so not sure if that helped... I think I'm going to start writing a diary to monitor his patterns in the next few days, see if there's a way I can slowly start building in a loose routine in the next few weeks.

Lady thanks for tip re. Nappies, will try next size tomorrow. Hope you are having a good night with your little one.
