Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

Don't feel bad Nina! 😊

I have just had a couple of hours sleep as my husband took the baby downstairs for a while. Not sure what I will do when he goes back to work..!

I am not sure about the logistics of expressing either and I am surprised my midwife said it was OK to start now when all the official advice says to wait 4 to 6 weeks. It is all so confusing!

Little one currently asleep on my lap. Tried to move him about half an hour ago into his snuzpod, but he woke himself up with flailing arms - feel like I should maybe give swaddling another go?

Here's hoping for good nights all round!

NinaMarieP · 17/08/2017 22:03

I've been feeding non-stop (apart from a nappy change) since about 7, so I'm hoping he'll go down at 11 or 12 and let me sleep for a few hours. It's my turn for peace in the bedroom while his dad stays with him.

DeliciouslyHella · 17/08/2017 22:41

She's asleep yet I'm wide awake... this doesn't seem fair. Hmm

Lallypopstick · 17/08/2017 23:40

He's up, has fed from one side and fell asleep again. Would quite like him to drain the other side too, so we'll see if he stirs.

@DeliciouslyHella I hope you got some sleep! It's so annoying when you can't doze off.

Ookmybanana · 17/08/2017 23:43

I have a lazy sucker! Keep thinking he finished and then when I try and detach him, he goes back to feeding. I need to keep nudging him.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 00:24

Ookmybanana my little boy is just the same.

I have just had three hours of sleep while my husband looked after baby, so hopefully I have had enough to keep me going if it's another long night!

Hope everyone has a good night 😊

Oh I miss the newborn stage.

I'm awake with my 17 year old. She's out but keeps texting me.

NinaMarieP · 18/08/2017 00:32

Tonight has been rough. He hasn't stopped feeding since just after 7 and my nipples have just gotten sorer and sorer as he keeps coming off and going back on as well as pulling his head back and tugging. He did fall asleep not too long ago but needed a new nappy and sleepsuit on, so got woken again. Daddy is trying to settle him again sans boob.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 00:38

Ahh RJnomore1 it must be a whole different level of worry when they are teens, it's good she is keeping you updated though.

Ahh Nina hope your night improves and you manage some rest soon.

He's down. So I've changed my milk soaked top, brushed my teeth and collapsed into bed.

Hope everyone else's night goes more smoothly.

RJnomore1 · 18/08/2017 00:45

It's not good. Sorry to hijack a lovely baby thread. She's been thrown out the nightclub she shouldn't even have been in, dh has just finished work and gone to find her. I'm a bundle of nerves here.

I remember the nipple agony. I don't really have much advice.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 01:02

Oh no RJnomore1, I hope she is home safe with you very soon Flowers

Nina I hope you are sleeping soundly!

RJnomore1 · 18/08/2017 01:03

He's got her, they're home.

Lallypopstick · 18/08/2017 01:45

Nina hope your nipples are recovering while you sleep. Ready for the next shift tomorrow!

I've just fed on the other side. He didn't stir earlier so I put him in the Snuzpod. Right boob was pretty engorged pre-feed and the nipple was practically flat. Made the feed pretty painful so I'm airing it out and applying Lansinoh.

RJ glad she's home and safe. I remember my mum saying that you don't really sleep when your teenagers / young adults go out. Hopefully your not so little one will feel better in the morning, and that she's not too big for a mum hug.

Well done on the three hours Jelly. Hope the rest of the night goes well.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 01:59

Thank goodness RJ. Hope you all manage to get some rest now she is home safe.

Baby has been laying awake in his Next2Me crib for almost an hour. Not crying but seems to have wind! I put my hand on his tummy and closed my eyes but no sleep. At least I was resting! He then started rooting so we are up for another feed!

Hope the lansinoh works quickly Lally, I have found it to be very effective 😊

Lally - my boobs have never been out so much as lately. All that air drying 😂 and my other half keeps opening the kitchen blinds. Just as well we're not really overlooked!

NinaMarieP · 18/08/2017 02:42

Lansinoh is awesome stuff. Word of warning though - don't sit a hot laptop near or. Or else it'll all melt and pour all over you when you open it. Speaking from experience 😳

Ookmybanana · 18/08/2017 03:52

Not been a good night here. Feed after feed and he doesn't seem to be able to settle and is constantly rooting and looking for food. I think I've snatched about 30 mins sleep tonight. Still, it's the worst night we've had and today has been a day of a lot of change so it's you've expected.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 04:17

We have just managed a 90 minute sleep and even I managed to nod off too, up for a feed now and he seems quite alert so will do a nappy change before we switch sides. My husband is sound asleep but he did stay up til midnight so I could sleep so I will do my best not to disturb him til 6ish!

Ookmybanana that sounds like us last night. I suppose it's just a case of remembering some nights are better than others, it's so hard when you're exhausted though. It's good knowing there are others awake too though, definitely makes it less lonely in the middle of the night 😊

Nina thanks for the lansinoh laptop advice 😂

Just to say it does get better. Good night here, DS fell asleep on me at about 7.30, woke him to feed and put him to bed at 10, and he's slept till 20 to 5. He's wide awake now though...

Lallypopstick · 18/08/2017 17:38

Last night was ok, though we had an extra wake up which then meant his wake up around 4am left him thinking that it was morning - he fed for about 90 minutes then wouldn't settle in his snuzpod. Thankfully, my partner took him at 6am and he fell asleep on him, so I could go back to sleep for a bit.

We've had a nap together this afternoon which I needed. I might try and figure out the pump to express as well, so I can express from one side tonight during a night feed. I was pretty full last night and my nipples were nearly flat.

Jellybean2017 · 18/08/2017 17:51

We had a couple of good stretches of sleep between feeds last night and have topped up with an afternoon nap. I hired a breast pump today but just waiting for all of my sterilising equipment to arrive. If we have some more nights like last one I will try to hold off expressing a little bit longer, though I'm not expecting every night to be as good as the last one! Would be interested to know how you get on with expressing Lally if you do decide to give it a go.

How's everyone doing tonight?

We cluster fed this afternoon from 3-6, then had a normal feed around 8 and then I got to sleep between 9.30 and 12.30.
