Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

We have been having worse nights than ever! And now baby has dark green poops thrown into the mix and ny husband is snoring beside me 🙈🙈🙈

Are dark green stools anything to worry about? We are breastfeeding.

I thought green means they’re either over feeding or not getting enough hind milk - too much lactose. We had one the other day after lots of short feeds where he’d fall asleep during.

BodhiBear · 08/10/2017 05:25

Our new born is 7 weeks today and it does get better! But I'd be inclined to ditch the Moses basket - as who would find sleeping in a basket with a thin mattress comfy?! We were given one and haven't used it once (they just look like a picnic hamper to me). We also have a Sleepyhead which I did really love until the media burst yesterday on baby nests being unsafe, so I'd review carefully now before buying as they are pretty darn expensive. So I'm not sure I've helped much?

Morning all ... checking in after a couple of days/nights loitering!
I have a 12 day old DD who is a complete dream during the day it a nightmare at night. Won't settle in anything other than on my chest or on my knees. She is sleeping for 3 hrs about midnight till 3am then just cluster feeds.

Please tell me it gets better?!
She is obviously tired but just won't settle.

Hope everyone is having an ok evening.. well morning!

k567 · 08/10/2017 06:52

Waps it does get better! Have you tried swaddling your baby?

Today my 8 week old boy was screaming and I tried everything to settle him but nothing worked so I gave him a dummy for the first time ever. He settled straight away. Don’t know why I was so reluctant to try before, he seems really content now

GinUnicorn · 08/10/2017 06:54

Mines been awake 12-3am and now 5am to present :( tell me it improves. She's currently wriggling and refusing to settle

AMagdalena · 08/10/2017 08:57

It dooes get better, but I wouldn't be looking at a specific number of weeks etc. Some babies are better sleepers than others!
My DD did 4-ish hours to start off with and woke up to give us a poopy present and then she was up every 2 hrs.
I eventually brought her in my bed and poor DH was on nappy duty last night.
DD vomitted all over him (reflux baby); I didn't keep her upright- my bad, then when changing her lovely present to him, she peed all over. Waheeey 😂

Lallypopstick · 09/10/2017 09:01

Thought we might turn a corner now Leap 3 is over but last night was pretty bad. He was up being sick at about 2am and I wonder if he’s caught a bug from his dad, who was sick the other day / night. That 6 hour stretch last weekend seems like a distant memory! I’d say we’ve had no massive improvements since about 6 weeks old, and we’re at 11 weeks now.

Going to persist with putting him down for naps today so I can try and get some extra sleep.

AMagdalena · 09/10/2017 09:23

Last night was a write-off for us, too! I think DD had trapped wind.
I am going to try and nap with DD instead of holding her (won't nap at all and will juat scream otherwise).

I really hope this improves in a few weeks.

SK12345 · 13/10/2017 02:34

Full on cluster feeds the last few nights (2 hours, 3 hours) very exhausting! Also very screamy, on and off boob - obviously frustrated and wanting to feed but then not getting into boob without crying. Very frustrating.

Took dd to breastfeeding clinic today at private place who check for tongue tie, asked them to check and she has it! Unbelievable!

Up now and hoping she’ll then go through to 5ish...?

AMagdalena · 13/10/2017 12:24

Gotta love cluster feeding SK 😑
We haven't been doing too bad lately. DD has stopped giving us 'presents' 3 times ler night, so does between anything between 4.5 and 6 hrs.
She won't settle in her crib when she wakes up, though, so we bedshare after that.
She doesn't seem to be in pain with reflux, but boy, does she spit up!

Lallypopstick · 14/10/2017 02:53

I guess at nearly 12 weeks, my baby isn’t a newborn anymore but since he’s woken up every two hours tonight it sure feels that way! Too early for the 4 month regression I think? I really thought things would be better by this stage but they plateaued for a while and now they’re worse. If tonight isn’t a one off, I’ll be so sad.

HashtagTired · 14/10/2017 03:42

We’re up.
He was feeding every 2-3 hours but the last few days he’s increased to 1-2 hours. I think it must be a growth spurt, he’s almost 6 weeks.

He’s sleeping on my chest now but has a bit of reflux so I let him sleep here for about 20 mins before laying him down. Experience of doing this with him tells me he’s less likely to be sick. Plus I love my cuddles with him!

HashtagTired · 14/10/2017 03:43

Lilly
Have you had a look at the wonder weeks? 12 week fussy period.

Lallypopstick · 14/10/2017 05:06

Hashtag I have the app but apparently he was in Leap 3 last week. But then I know these things aren’t exact. I hope I can nap today!

Csd17 · 14/10/2017 07:02

I’ve been up with my 7 week old since 1.15am. He snoozed a little in his crib between 230 and 330 then has been with me since. It’s a good job he is cute. It does get so much easier. Those first weeks, I wanted to put him back inside and go back to my old life of undisturbed nights and freedom. Now I am in love with my night time snuggles. These are going to pass by so fast and soon he will be a wriggley little crawling pain in my ass and I will long to hold my tiny new born again.

For sore nipples I used the standard nipple cream. My midwife also recommended that I pumped with the sorest breast for a few days while it healed. Made a huge difference. Even though I didn’t pump for every feed, using the pump on and off through out the day gave the nipple a break and chance to heal.

I have so much respect for all the mothers out there. Those awake day and night. Until we have our baby, you can never truly understand what it’s like to have a newborn. There’s no preparation for this marathon.

NinaMarieP · 14/10/2017 09:52

The last 2 nights we’ve gone from a feed at 7pm to the next at 2am! So with me going to bed about 9 I’m getting a good bit of sleep to start the night.

Of course this will be a 2 night fluke and tomorrow we’ll go back to every 3.5-4 hours.

Csd17 · 14/10/2017 12:36

That sounds very positive Nina!!

AMagdalena · 14/10/2017 14:13

Hashtag Joing the club. My DD has reflux , too which means it takes me considerably longer to put her back in her cot after she wakes.

Csd17 It is a marathon, indeed. I think I was a tad naive before I had DD in thinking that you can teach a newborn to sleep by introducing a routine etc. No, they do what they flipping want!!!
.
.
Last night wasn't great, but at least she isn't up every 45mins like she used to be! Used to do my head in.

I think I have come to terms with the fact that my baby isn't a good sleeper Grin which somewhat helps.

Csd17 · 15/10/2017 02:33

Hi all. Anyone else’s baby get fussy on the breast randomly? He’s going through leap 2 and most of yesterday it felt like I didn’t have enough milk for him as he was fighting so hard. The day before he had been so sleepy. I tell you, my child changes every single day.

AMagdalena · 15/10/2017 19:13

Csd my DD gets fussy on the boob before a poo 🙈

NinaMarieP · 15/10/2017 19:39

Yes, mine. Of course after I posted about two nights of 7-2 we got 7-12, and were up for two hours. Then up at four and fussy from the start to the point he screamed and refused the boob for ten minutes.

He then got a bottle at 8 and screamed and reused that for ages to when previously he has taken them really well.

Lallypopstick · 15/10/2017 22:11

90 minutes from bedtime to first wake up. Three nights in a row now. Why is this happening?!

GinUnicorn · 15/10/2017 23:19

Ffs she won't go down tonight! Aaaah

HashtagTired · 16/10/2017 00:31

Wind unsettling this one. Could really do with some shut eye now.
