Guys

Just wanted to start a thread about why everybody loves Skiing, thought it would be good as Winter setting in.

Mine are - watching daughter fly past me down a slope !! :) The fresh crisp mountain air, we ski in March/April so generally sunshine!

Evenings, good food and wine with friends an open roaring fire whilst the children play!! Ahhh Bliss :)

Less than 3 weeks to go....Grin

Les Orres, Risoul, Puy St Vincent...we will ski at a few different places. Hoping the snow keeps coming!

Me, DH, 2 boys (8&10) and later my DB is joining us. Can't wait!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/11/2014 14:38

Yes, the fantastic early snow falls are only adding to our excitement!

crappyday · 24/11/2014 17:48

Me me me! Going to les gets for new year.
Taking DD (3) for first time. DS (8) already leaves me behind!
The mountains, the views, the adrenaline rush when I get it right and I'm going accurately down a lovely tree-lined run...
And the vin chaud
And eating massive meals for every meal but not feeling enormously fat cos you're doing so much exercise.
(And the chalet girl so I don't have to cook or wash up or anything)

FairyPenguin · 24/11/2014 18:06

I love skiing! Taking the DC for the first time this year and can't wait. Mountain air, beautiful views, watching others skiing gracefully and wishing I could do the same! Eating and drinking aplenty, without feeling guilty as we'll have burnt off loads of energy on the mountains. This time, it'll be a completely different experience - the DC are booked into morning lessons and I'm wondering whether I'll be able to drag myself away from watching them in order to ski myself. Fingers crossed they both love it otherwise we (esp my DH) will be gutted.

Millie2013 · 26/11/2014 20:15

Ok, now I can get excited, we've booked to go to la rosiere over new year. Now just the minor matter of getting a passport for DD, after OH cocked up Her application

PauletteTheTart · 01/12/2014 15:05

Been skiing since '63 when it was a dangerous sport with lace-up boots, cable bindings, wooden skis with screwed on segmented edges and they started you on the longest skis that would fit under the tips of your fingers on an upstretched arm - in my case 215s!! Now I still hammer blacks and I'm looking forward to free lift passes in just three years!

In between I've taught several friends, two ex-wives and my son when he was 4¼ and one of my proudest moments was when he did his first black when he was 7. I've qualified and worked as a dry-slope instructor, taught my partner on her first skiing holiday when she was 57 and I even learned to snowboard at 50.

Do I love skiing? I've now bought the house we rented for that holiday and spend the whole season there!

DaisyFitz · 05/12/2014 10:25

We're off to Peisey with Esprit a week on Sunday. Just need some of that white stuff!!

I love skiing because it's like Christmas no matter what time of year - snow, fairy lights, you can drink schnapps for breakfast and no one bats and eyelid.

I love that you can eat and drink what you like but because you're doing soooo much exercise you don't get (too) fat.

Gluhwein & Goulasch Suppe. Heaven.

SweepTheHalls · 05/12/2014 10:28

Taking my boys for the first time this year, doin the Burton Mini shred with them at Easter, my 6 and 4 years old on snow boards! It's going to be awesome!

GlaceCherries · 05/12/2014 10:36

This thread is making me cry! We had our last term time skiing holiday back in March, secondary school started in Sep and we have NO plans for any more skiing holidays...

Before kids and with kids we like to ski in March (generally great weather and snow). Never been during a school holiday but lots of friends tell us it's a complete nightmare, long queues and busy slopes - and we can't afford it then anyway.

All you lucky people off to the slopes this season! Enjoy!!

VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2014 10:46

The esprit chalets at Peisey are fab Daisy. Have you been before?

I'm another one who isn't skiing this season (or last) due to secondary school.

Dd is going with school in easter holidays for a week. But me and dh can't afford Easter for us. I can't get the time off work either.

SweepTheHalls · 05/12/2014 10:52

Me and DH are both teachers, so are resigned to the holiday costs and queues! Easter holidays for us.

Johnogroats · 05/12/2014 13:24

I do hope that it starts snowing sometime soon. We may be going to the Alps in 2 weeks time, but we won't be doing much skiing unless things change!

While you are on the Happy Skiing Chat thread, please can you all do a little snow dance?

Xmas Grin
Linseed · 05/12/2014 13:40

We are off tomorrow to Tignes with very limited skiing and only high on the glacier. At least we will still ski, but it's definitely not going to be a winter wonderland in the resort. Has anyone skied on the Grande Motte who can give any tips on the runs there? Slightly nervous as normally ski on tree lined lower altitude slopes.

Carol1379 · 05/12/2014 13:44

Snow Dance done !!!

Love the fact that eveybodys joining in.

Just love reading all the posts ! Keep them coming

Happy weekend all :) :)

Hit the Aldi special buys yesterday and got the boys goggles, gloves and thermals Grin

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 07/12/2014 06:51

[snowdance] for everyone off skiing imminently.

Xmas Grin

Linseed IIRC the runs on the Grande Motte are fairly easy but they're also quite featureless. Do you have some good googles? You can get them with orangey/yellow lenses to highlight bumps in the snow. They're brilliant for undifferentiated terrain if the cloud comes in.

I sent the DH to Aldi yesterday and there was not one word about ski kit from him [dozy]!

icklekid · 07/12/2014 06:58

Like glace so jealous of all on this thread. ds is only 5 months so not going this year and was pregnant last year so didn't risk it... will be working again next year so back to expensive school holidays. Hoping that can go next year- is going with friends with dc a good plan so can share child care? Have fun and enjoy the Wine!

Linseed · 07/12/2014 07:43

Thanks Sarah :) just had breakfast on first day here and about to head for funicular. Average age of other guests in chalet approx 80 with hilarious reports of how their prostates behaved last night. Your post has reassured me as pre ski butterflies are kicking in. Yes I have goggles with a tint, thanks for tips.

Millie2013 · 07/12/2014 07:54

Have a fab day!

PickledMoomin · 07/12/2014 08:20

We are going for the first time in March. This thread is making me feel very excited-I've only felt nervous previously.

We plan to do a day at the snow dome before then....

The DC are fantastic at ice skating.I hope this will help them slightly.

slalomsuki · 07/12/2014 19:49

Going 2 weeks today and looking forward to it. Not much snow at the moment but it is forecast for this week. Hopefully it will be great as going to Austria for the first time having skied in France before.

anotherdayanothersquabble · 09/12/2014 08:56

There is snow on the hills today!!!!! The Jura are covered in a beautiful dusting of snow. More due in Sunday!

slalomsuki · 09/12/2014 11:23

Just checked the web cam for Austria and its all white today. But it doesn't seem to be too deep so perhaps it's a false hope. They seem to be running the gondola though so there ,must be skiing at the top.

massistar · 09/12/2014 12:32

Have just booked an additional sneaky 4 days in Avoriaz in January. Just me, DH and our 2 friends. Childfree skiing!!

DaisyFitz · 09/12/2014 16:05

@VivaLeBeaver - Not been to the Esprit ones there before - stayed at the Ski Bet ones next door a few years ago. Have done St Anton and Obergurgl with Esprit, loved those.

Still got v little snow... 5 days to go. gulp Own silly fault. Vowed not to book until the day or two before, but panicked when Esprit sold out of Obergurgl, St Anton and Courcheval places.
