Guys

Just wanted to start a thread about why everybody loves Skiing, thought it would be good as Winter setting in.

Mine are - watching daughter fly past me down a slope !! :) The fresh crisp mountain air, we ski in March/April so generally sunshine!

Evenings, good food and wine with friends an open roaring fire whilst the children play!! Ahhh Bliss :)

PestoStormissimos · 17/12/2014 09:41

GetMe · 17/12/2014 10:33

Good advice, I will def look into Espirit thanks as we may be able to squeeze a holiday in in Jan!

JaneDMumsnet · 17/12/2014 11:11

Hello, hello just wanted to flag up our shiny new ski pages over here www.mumsnet.com/travel/skiing-with-children-advice including a fabulous competition with Mark Warner to win a ski holiday Grin

Johnogroats · 17/12/2014 11:44

Jessie - I skied when pg with DS1. Someone asked me in the bar if I was pg...it being unusual for me to drink coke and hot choc when beer and vin chaud were on offer. I said, "WHAT?? Do I ski like I'm pg!" It shut them up.

Seriously I was quite careful, and particularly so on the runs back to resort in the late afternoon. I was crap at après ski though. Xmas Grin

Johnogroats · 17/12/2014 11:48

Hi janeMN

I just entered! Good ski pages. X

CaurnieBred · 17/12/2014 11:52

GetMe - if your children are younger, also look at LeSki in La Tania: fab creche and the chalet is much nicer than any of the Esprit ones we have been to since! I did do a review on here a few years ago (Chalet Marmau I think).

Esprit is better for the older kids though so have been going with them since DD was 5.

Iamblossom · 17/12/2014 12:16

Very excited - Morzine in Feb half term - cant come quick enough.

I heard the snow is really bad at the moment though, ie, there isn't any....is that true?

juneau · 17/12/2014 12:44

We go on 27th to Austria and weather seems to be getting a bit colder and snowier. I check the webcams every day and have been rather worried so far, but they have a few lifts open now and they have 200 snow cannons, so fingers crossed.

As for what we love - the clear mountain air, blue sky, roaring log fires, hearty food, and doing something active and fun as a family. DS1 is now seven and is linking turns and managing blues easily and some reds, DS2 is three-and-a-half and we're getting him on skis for the first time this year! I'm so excited and hope he enjoys it. Skiing is a huge highlight of our year as a family.

newgirl123 · 17/12/2014 13:15

I love the whole family being at the same level as something - we can all go together.

I love the fact you can eat anything for a week!

I love the views, the mountains, the beautiful snow.

The funky bars and party atmosphere.

CruCru · 17/12/2014 14:04

Woohoo! We are going to Morzine with our kids (aged 3 and 1) and some friends and their kids (aged 5 and 3). We've booked a chalet, I'm really excited. This will be the first time I've skied since having kids.

I have just ordered some cheap skiing gear because I am not convinced that my old stuff will still fit.

UniS · 17/12/2014 14:13

Morzine in a months time.... And nw its started to snow. Hurrah.
Still nobooked the boy any tuition, can't Fi d the group leson I want for him, may go for a couple of mor ings private. Want us to ski as a family more this year. Boy , aged 8 is a total powder pup. 4 weeks on skis and loves it.

flipchart · 17/12/2014 14:38

I've got a few trips to the Tatras booked for skiing.

EsmeGruntFuttock · 17/12/2014 14:40

We're due to go to La Rosiere next Monday with Esprit but weather not looking at all good. They are shuttling people to another resort this week by coach, but it's 45 minutes away and if they are having to do that next week it will be beyond crazy. In that other resort only about 1/10th of the lifts are open at present anyway. We're really worried; a £5k skiing holiday with potentially no skiing :-(

Carol1379 · 17/12/2014 15:13

We're off to Snowfocus next spring - went 2 years ago and have been saving frantically ever since to go back! DD2 is now old enough to have a go on the slopes, and I just cannot wait for it! Am spending hours on ebay looking at secondhand ski kit for DD1 and me Grin

flipchart · 17/12/2014 16:18

I've just booked another one. So that's 3 trips to Poland and one to Slovenia!

TexanKenDoll · 17/12/2014 16:38

What a lovely happy thread! So nice that everyone is excited.

I'm no longer allowed to ski due to illness but we've always been fans of the long lunch and frequent stops for hot chocolate mit rum type of skiing so I've adapted quite well to the role of ski bunny instead!

We go to St Moritz, Zermatt and Lech but only in the warmer months. (I'm bad with the very very cold weather) and have stayed at the same hotels (not so much of a chalet fan anymore) and had the same guides for years.

Love meeting family for lunch and being able to swim/gym/have a massage whilst they ski. Also love the atmosphere and amazing food. DC will start skiing next year with our family guide, it's going to be lovely.

juneau · 17/12/2014 17:00

This article might make some early-season skiers feel a bit better (although a lot of resorts aren't mentioned): www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/snowandski/skiing-news/11296842/Skiing-No-snow-doomsayers-are-wrong-theres-plenty-in-the-Alps-this-Christmas.html

DontGotoRoehamptonUniversity · 17/12/2014 18:39

Juneau thanks does put it on perspective! We were skiing at Xmas 2006, at least the DChad a great time and learned to ski over bare rock & ice Grin

CruCru · 17/12/2014 19:15

UniS - here is the website for booking lessons in Morzine.

CruCru · 17/12/2014 19:18

Oh wow TexanKenDoll - I've not been to St Moritz but I love Zermatt and Lech.

Where do you all buy your kids' ski gear from? I bought DS some ski gloves and mittens from Muddy Puddles but they are too big and they don't have the smaller ones.

WaroftheRoses · 17/12/2014 19:21

We first skied Feb 2013-lucky enough to be close to an indoor slope so we had a crash course so knew what we were doing out there! (DH had skied before) Went to La Plagne-ideal for us as beginners and also for DH to push himself more when we were in ski school. Just a great experience-kids able to do what we were doing (and in fact do it better eventually!), sharp cold air on your skin but fab sunshine too!

Loved it so much we took a gamble and went again first week of the 2013-14 season and had ample snow and was very cheap! Unfortunately I was injured by lunchtime first day Blush but the rest of them had a great second hol and I just hobbled round on crutches and drank vin chaud in the sunshine!!

School hols at Easter start a week earlier for us and don't clash with the French so we are off in March-again to La Plagne! DH and poss 2 DC will spend mornings exploring the bits he's not done yet-I've just got to get my head round the fact I'm not going to knacker both my knees again-hopefully!

I just love love love the mountains and the cold! Such a fab sport-wish we had got into it earlier! Xmas Smile

CruCru · 17/12/2014 19:23

Nice! I went to La Plagne the first time I went skiing (2001 so a really long time ago).

ResponsibleAdult · 17/12/2014 20:05

I can confirm it is skiing in the Alps. In Tignes Val Claret, the highest point in Tignes, light dusting Monday, cloudy Tuesday, today been snowing quite heavily since about 2pm, still snowing, had 10cms this afternoon. Val d Isere that was patchy must be better now, will ski over to check this week.

Interestingly, the Savoie weather report is not up to date, it claims Tignes hasn't had any snow for ages, that's not true, so take it with a pinch of salt. However we think the pisteurs are preserving their slopes as only 50% open.

Will get out early tomorrow to beat the hungover uni students who could try harder with their slope awareness Hmm Thankfully they don't appear until about 1pm, when we are going in for lunch.
