Guys

Just wanted to start a thread about why everybody loves Skiing, thought it would be good as Winter setting in.

Mine are - watching daughter fly past me down a slope !! :) The fresh crisp mountain air, we ski in March/April so generally sunshine!

Evenings, good food and wine with friends an open roaring fire whilst the children play!! Ahhh Bliss :)

Fingers crossed France get the storm which is meant to be hitting the uk and they get some snow!

crappyday · 09/12/2014 17:10

DH keeps checking the webcam for les gets where we're going over new year and every day he's disappointed!
Fingers crossed for big snowstorms in France soon.

slalomsuki · 14/12/2014 11:22

Snow is not looking to good in Austria at the moment so am thinking of what other things we can do if the snow is rubbish and we have to swim or something else.

Might change this week but not enough is forecast to cover the whole resort. I was sure I was seeing the snow line recede via the webcam on Friday when I was looking at it at work.

DontGotoRoehamptonUniversity · 15/12/2014 18:40

Just booked a hotel in Meribel for w/c 3 Jan...

Thisissomething · 16/12/2014 15:57

Waiting for snow in Pra Loup! Nothing as of yet and going just after christmas! Never even occurred to me there would not be any snow. Fingers crossed

ResponsibleAdult · 16/12/2014 16:12

Adore skiing as it's a whole family pursuit. Exercise, scenery, too much food and wine, beautiful scenery, bliss.

Currently in Tignes, snow on pistes, but clear in the resort. Snowed already and more snow forecast. DCs are far too fast too keep up with, all having a brilliant time. Can't go at half term or Easter because of GCSEs so booked two weeks, it's fantastic. It means we don't have to ski like special forces on a mission and can take time out just to do nothing.

slalomsuki · 16/12/2014 17:10

Only 2 runs open in the resort at the moment, one reserved for beginners and ski school and the other for more experienced skiers. Despite a snow shower today and more showers forecast until Sunday it's not looking good.

Plan B with alcohol springs to mind I think.

inconceivableme · 16/12/2014 17:53

I wish!!! DS is only 2 so we're waiting until next winter at least. I so miss it though! We used to go every winter, sometimes twice in a winter!

Trickydecision · 16/12/2014 18:26

I am a refugee from what became a very controversial thread in Chat, where I was mad enough to ask opinions on who should pay for an extra room. All now resolved, five of the family and a GF, plus three friends, off to Couchevel 1650.

snowmummy · 16/12/2014 18:56

We're moving to a city that has a number of resorts within day trip distance so lots of snowboarding for me and dh, and skiing for the kids :D

5exybomb · 16/12/2014 20:05

We are going Feb half term. My husband and I learnt as adults so we are not big skiers but the kids are and we love watching them as well as the apres ski of course! Europe weather is bad at the moment though so not great is you are a Christmas skier. Hope it improves for them.

GermanGirlinLondon · 16/12/2014 20:32

Planning to go to Courchevel over the New Year, but not much snow at the moment, so might not go.

Johnogroats · 16/12/2014 20:37

Ooh. This thread has been moved to discussions of the day! We've got 5 days to go before we hit the slopes...not yet looking fab, but temps have dropped and the snow machines are working a bit....

Marlinspike · 16/12/2014 20:51

Hello! Getting really excited about our trip to the Pyrennees in Feb! I love skiing for the following reasons:

It's a family holiday that the whole family enjoy (DCs are 17 and 21, so well past those stressful tears and ski school days!)
The sun glinting off the snow on a lovely empty run (yes - that's common at half term where we ski!)
Playing silly alphabet games on chairlifts!
People (and ski-outfit) watching from mountain bar terraces
Gluhwine!
Beautiful shops in ski resorts!
Making up fun quizzes in the evenings!
That lovely tiredness you get from a day in the fresh air
Doing a run full of lovely, elegant, sweeping turns (well, that's what it feels like anyway)
Getting up early and catching a gorgeous sun rise over the mountains, and knowing it's going to be a fantastic day.
Looking at a piste map and knowing you've skied pretty much all of the resort.

Bring it on!

clam · 16/12/2014 21:36

I'm happy because I thought we wouldn't manage to go this season as dh couldn't get time off work. Anyway, he's now managed to wangle it, so we're nipping off for a shortened week Feb half term. Grin

GetMe · 16/12/2014 22:03

Any advice on the best way to do it with young DCs? A hotel with creche? Chalet?

We used to go when before we were married so stayed in crappy small apartments but would love to go with the kids.

fififolle · 16/12/2014 22:54

The best way to ski with small children is to go with Esprit- you won't look back!

Sonoma · 17/12/2014 00:17

Argh, pregnant and staying home! Husband off with two older ones at half term to Austria, so jealous. Have demanded two hols in 2016 to compensate :) happy skiing all!

Pepperpot69 · 17/12/2014 01:21

Go to Glencoe in Scotland, only 2hrs from home! Day trips are a doddle, no airports or transfer hassles! The DCs get taken by school too! In April we can waterski off the beach in the morning and catch the last runs in the afternoon!!! Amazing!

madwomanbackintheattic · 17/12/2014 04:47

We live in a ski resort. We have four world class hills within driving distance, bases are between 60 and 90 odd cms I think. Not too bad for this early in the season, but we had our first major snowfall in the first week in September, and then a huge winter storm two weeks ago.

Kids and dh went up the hill last weekend (dd2's ski program started) and mil and fil arrive next weekend for their annual 6 week Christmas/ ski holiday. Grin kids said snow was fab, but light was a bit flat in the afternoon as it was snowing.

Y'all should emigrate, really. Wink

JessieMcJessie · 17/12/2014 05:47

We've just booked our skiing holiday for mid Feb - in Japan! Not as extravagant as it sounds because we live in Hong Kong. We've been to a different resort on Hokkaido Island a few times, this is our first time to one nearer Tokyo - Happo One. Japanese mountain food is awesome - katsu curry and massive bowls of noodles - and they have fantastic hot spring baths called onsens (our hotel has a private one). You have to go in completely naked though! Snow is deep and powdery and there are hardly any queues compared to Europe. Can't wait.

That said, I am hoping to be pregnant by the time it comes round. But if we are lucky enough for that to happen I think I'll be fine to do some gentle skiing won't I? I hardly ever fall over. I know the onsen will be a big no-no.

icklekid · 17/12/2014 06:23

fifi amazing! Never heard of esprit but it looks like skiing and childcare could actually be possible!!! Perhaps next year will be our year Xmas Grin

icklekid · 17/12/2014 06:34

jessie I would still have skiied when pregnant but be aware you may have less energy/ get tired quickly!

GlaceCherries · 17/12/2014 08:18

I also recommend Esprit - we skied before kids with various other companies but have only ever gone with Esprit since having kids. They have always been fab with the children - even if some of their chalet staff / catering was a bit dodgy (one time). Happy kids = happy parents.

I think we've used them at least 6 times...

Japan sounds amazing. I skied one time with a pregnant friend, apparently a safe thing to do in the first trimester as baby isn't protruding and is still protected in the pelvis (as safe as it ever is).

massistar · 17/12/2014 09:21

We go with a big group of friends all with kids the same age every year and stay in a big chalet. For anyone skiing with little ones for the first time it's a fab way to do it as they are much more likely to enjoy ski school if they are in with their friends. Plus the adults take turns to take the really little ones back to the chalet early if they are tired so the rest can squeeze in a few late runs and some vin chaud!
