Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

Soupdragon - when I'm the voice of reason you know it's time to start worrying

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:26

Biwi yes, but it is only good manners to consider changing a name if you realize that some people are actually taking offense? And not just keep on about your right to be offensive, and claim others are just stupid and pathetic, jealous for not having thought about it themselves, and in the end go elsewhere if they cant stomach it.

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 29/09/2009 16:27

rofl at scunthorpe

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 16:27

Is that what cuntwhacker's said? Has she been asked?

I agree, QS, but that's not what you said.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:28

CayPeag, there has been many threads on this today. That is the gist what she and the "defenders" or the name said.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:29

Biwi, sorry, I have said so much on this today, there has been so many threads. Did not think of repated highlights from previous threads.....

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 16:30

well yes indeed.

As i have said before, i swear and i would detest the idea of a swear filter for posts but i think it fair to ask people not to use foul language in thread titles and indeed posting names.

The words are deemed as offensive, thats the whole point of them.
Its a ridiculous argument to say that it should be ok to deliberatly offend people.

im quite sure there would be uproar of someone were to namechange to

"pakiniggerqueerdykespaz"

to me it is no different.

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 16:30

Ah, the 'gist'

pinkthechaffinch · 29/09/2009 16:34

not read the whole thread, but appreciate this too. Thanks mumsnet hq

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:38

CayPeag, if you are suspicious of "the gist", here are the threads, feel free to read.

fortyplus · 29/09/2009 16:38

As chat names appear much bolder than the posts, how about we stick to names that we wouldn't mind the average 8 year old reading over our shoulders?

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/09/2009 16:38

Well, unusually, I find myself disagreeing with Wilf and Biwi on this occasion. I don't think that because mnhq have stepped in here that this is a slippery slope to anything.

This is a largely unmoderated site and Justine's request seems not unreasonable to me. I actually feel a leetel bit embarrassed for cuntwhacker.

I am all in favour of censorship .

toddlerama · 29/09/2009 16:40

This would never happen on moldies....

I don't mind AnyFucker's name at all, but I don't like the name CuntWhacker that has appeared (maybe it was here for ages and I have only just noticed). Whenever I see it on a thread I leave that thread. It's horrid IMO.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:46

Leningrad. That is a good idea.

If the majority of posters actually WANT to see such names among the posters, highligted in blue, then I will know for sure that this is in fact not the forum for me.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 16:48

But the vote would have to be about specific words and not about names. Otherwise we will be guilty of favouritism. For example, you may love AnyFucker but hate QueenofFuckingEverything. So we would have to vote on the word 'fuck' and all its derivations.

But let's say that we have a vote and agree that we don't like the use of the word 'cunt' in nicknames. What about the name CuckingFunt, which has been penned today? It's obvious what the name is 'meant' to be, but it doesn't have the dreaded word in it. Then what?

Blackduck · 29/09/2009 16:49

oh no, it'll end up like the DM vote....

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 16:49

Re your gist QS, having re-read those threads, I think you've gone looking for offence. And - IMO - that those complaining about swearwords were those making the most offensive comments and assumptions about other posters.

I'd rather have a bit of cunting fuckery if it means less knicker-twisted judgery.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:50

Then Biwi,
then it has been proven, that this site has really gone downhill, and I for one will be very sad indeed.

Lulumama · 29/09/2009 16:51

not sure what i think yet, but i do find the word cunt offensive and i think using it for comedy value, as in cunting sainsburys, was a stroke of never to be repeated comedy genuis

cuntwhacker.. that;s just nasty, overtones of horrible anti woman violence.

yuck

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 16:51

Blimey, you read fast caypeag.

fanjolina · 29/09/2009 16:51

I don't think CW said those things you are intimating QS. And certainly didn't tell posters to post elsewhere.

She took the pasting in a thread about her very well, considering the attack on her.

She has posted lots of normal, non-inflammatory posts

And from what I can see the one post where someone directly asked her to change her name, she asked for suggestions.

And has since disappeared - s either:
a) is now a cute dragonny name as suggested
b) has been banned by MNHQ or
c) has buggered off to do something more useful with her day
