Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

Hear, hear, Wilf.

I'm not bothered by swearing, either in the posts or in people's nicknames. But I know that some people are on PCs with all sorts of "checkers" activated, who will struggle to open ActiveConvos etc if there are certain words in the thread title or the nicknames. So, it would be helpful for people to restrain themselves a bit, so as not to prevent anyone else from MNing to the full.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:26

Now that's an acceptable reason, AMIS - but completely different from being censored.

AMumInScotland · 29/09/2009 15:27

I also agree with seeker - it's actually quite depressing that the worst thing which anyone can do is to refer to someone as a cunt or twat. Honestly, is that the most disgusting thing in the world? I quite like mine actually, and don't think it's the most vile and disgusting thing that anyone could be compared with.

Remotew · 29/09/2009 15:38

So anyone who objects to nicknames such as cuntingfuckingcrackwhore should buggar off to another site and leave you foul mouth fish wives to it eh.

CNyle · 29/09/2009 15:38

Thanks Justine.

TheFoosa · 29/09/2009 15:43

I don't find it funny either, but I really don't care if other people do

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:44

But CNyle - who's to say what's nasty and crap? Where does it end? Unless there's a list of specific words that are to be banned/avoided.

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 15:44

And it all gets a bit more joyless.

cocolepew · 29/09/2009 15:48

I think we should take our lead from the nice gentleman who is courting toopolite ATM.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:49
Grin
BitOfFun · 29/09/2009 15:50

Is there any such thing as a bit more joyless? Isn't that like saying more unique?

Nancy66 · 29/09/2009 15:53

I don't think a poster not being allowed to log in under the name of 'cuntflaps' is really going to change the face of MN forever. Don't see it as a slippery slope towards the Mary Whitehouse way of thinking either - just a nod to those that don't want want (virtual) cunts in their faces on a daily basis.

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 15:54

Well, would the moral minority care to register their lists here?

morningpaper · 29/09/2009 15:54

I agree Nancy

and if you serious depend on the joy obtained from logging in as MrsCuntyBuns then I'd advise some sort of hobby

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:58

But in certain circumstances, MP, that name could be quite funny! (Thinks of all the bunting cupcakes posts)

Slubberdegullion · 29/09/2009 15:58

Oh BIWI stop being so....

do I bring out the d word...

nope

obtuse.

Right here right now in general day to day life people do not march about shouting out the word cunt. WHY not, because currently for a variety of reasons, and regardless of if the word needs to be 'liberated' or not it is seen as an offensive word.

We are a community here, some people find it offensive, others do not. If we are to remain a civilised and supportive site then you do not keep brandishing the word about in a 'oh aren't I terribly coarse and edgy' fashion with a will to bludgeoning the offendees into submission.

And quite apart from that it makes the posters look, quite frankly, moronic.
