A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Oh I may have got rid of the small print in Threads I'm on, but I have just clicked on Active convos and it is still there. No amount of pressing f5 or ctrl f5 is getting rid of it.

Time to go away for a bit I think.

IAteMakkaPakka · 30/01/2009 09:56

In the hope that I don't tip some poor frazzled techy person into a breakdown, can i suggest a refresh button is put at the bottom of the page along with first/prev/next/last? I've just switched to pages rather than Ye Olde Classic view and for fast moving threads it would be nice [meek]

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:57

Yes, but there is a technical difference between the two types of refresh If you already have the right content (the actual words on the page) then a normal refresh won't change anything. It's the style (the information which tells the browser how to display it on the screen) that's changed.

Lemontart · 30/01/2009 09:57

can anyone tell me how to do a hard refresh on a Mac pls?

Will this fix the issue that Active convos seem to be in a funny order whereas it used to be top to bottom most recent added post on a thread first o is there an option in the set up thingie I have missed? Sorry for being slow and a bit "tech-needy" again..

YetMoreTech · 30/01/2009 09:57

KerryMumbles, not wanting to take sides or anything, but Slur is right. There was a beta test server where many many MNers experimented, commented and fed back loads of useful info.

However, the beta environment wasn't an absolutely perfect replica - how could it be when the live site moves so fast? Furthermore, in the migration process a few things have been "damaged" but they'll be fixed in due course.

hard refresh on mac is SHIFT-CMD R

ruty · 30/01/2009 09:59

how can i get classic on google chrome?

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2009 09:59

is there a way I can fix it so that threads i've visited show up in a different colour??????

Lemontart · 30/01/2009 09:59

thank you RubberDucky (you don?t mind me adding a little friendly "y" on the end do you )

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:59

Not at all I wanted to be RubberDucky but the name was sadly taken ...

PadDad · 30/01/2009 10:01

DumbledoresGirl, it's made me chuckle the more i think about it.

I agree there is absolutely NO reason why you should know what computer you own -- it's just a tool.

But IME whether you own a Mac or a PC is probably the biggest theological discussion in the world. Apple and Microsoft spend billions on this question, London is full of massive adverts about this. It's caused arguments in my marriage, my friends feel superior depending on the choice they've made . . .

Just funny that you should be oblivious. But no reason why you shouldn't, at all!

Bink · 30/01/2009 10:05

I think I can adapt to this EXCEPT, as threadworm said somewhere else, in active conversations the thread category (ie, the lead-in to the individual thread title) is a much smaller font than the title (and FAR TOO small for my fortyish eyes) - save that, for some reason, the Stickies at the top are OK & have both category & title fonts the same size.

SO - whatever it is you managed to do to make the font sizes conform for the Stickies, please do that for the rest of the active conversations layout.

Kayteee · 30/01/2009 10:05

Thanks for all your hard work, seriously. However!!! My "I'm watching is still coming up blank" ;)

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2009 10:07

PadDad, I am not really oblivious. If the gun had been pointing to my head, I could have explained all that myself. I am married to a man who loathes Microsoft and every time the computer does something silly and I ask why he says "F*ing Microsoft!" I don't actually know why we use it then, or what the alternative is, but I am aware of macs and apple and windows and microsoft but what they all mean is a mystery to me.

Hey, I am the kind of gal who, when asked what car just went past, says "A blue one".

You are right, they are tools. As long as I can chat here, or email friends or process my family snaps, I don't care whether I am using a dyson or a hoover.

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2009 10:11

Well done for all of your hard work. I don't know if it's beta or worse yet.

Minor gripe...

I usually have two windows up, so for example MN and tom and jerry for dd important intellectual stuff. Normally, having MN in a smaller window is fine, it just condenses. Now the window condenses but MN doesn't so I have to keep scrolling from left to right to read. It's impractical and annoying.

So, yes a minor gripe but ignore it for now. I'm sure the 876 other gripes are more pressing.

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2009 10:12

show of hands why don't ytou just have them in different tabs??
you can do that on most browsers now, even IE i think

girlandboy · 30/01/2009 10:14

Where's the colour change thing which signified the threads I had already looked at?

I miss it already.

And we didn't get any new emoticons......veryabout that.

Other than that, I quite like it!

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2009 10:15

Because I need to see both windows at once. When tabbed one's always hidden.

It's getting worse actually. Looked fine and now I've tried to click on 'mumsnet classic' I've got the new improved version but with tiny font and no separations. It's just changed colour too and the threads have all flipped.

Oo-er.

Is this what drugs are like?

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2009 10:16

yep that's my only problem now too girlandboy.

can't see easily which threads you've already been on.

fryalot · 30/01/2009 10:16

just one small thing (not whinging, I promise...) There doesn't seem to be a clipboard-y icon-y thing for seeing a poster's profile.

or perhaps everyone has deleted their profile...

epithet · 30/01/2009 10:17

Fab! I've just done the shift + refresh thing in Firefox and it's looking mighty fine now!

Thanks very much .

Lemontart · 30/01/2009 10:18

squonk - if you click on the name of the person above their post, is that not a direct link to their profile if you want to peek? At least, that is what I have always used..

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2009 10:18

I want Mumsnet classic option.

And I want my threads top to bottom again. How???? I can't see an option on customize and the classic option makes no difference.

tumtumtetum · 30/01/2009 10:19

Please can you make this thread stick to the top? The first post sorted out the look of MN for me but I nearly did n't see it.

Thanks.
