A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

I have worked out why my read threads weren't going purple now... we had Firefox set to keep history for exactly 0 days (not sure why this didn't affect the old MN though?)

RubberDuck · 16/02/2009 14:16

Oooo! This probably was updated days ago, but I haven't been on many threads lately, but I do like being able to see a summary of who's commented since you did on a thread again, along with clickable links to get to different parts of the thread. THANK YOU!

Can you transfer same functionality to threads I'm watching, please? Pretty please?

ThreadieMair · 16/02/2009 14:20

MNHQ -- I'm still not seeing SN topics on Active Convos. The option to opt in has returned, and I am opted in. But nothing on Active Convos page.

Is it absent for other people too, or is it just me? It is very sad if SN is not appearing on Active Convos for others too.

OliviaMumsnet · 16/02/2009 21:13

Threadie - sorry for delay in getting back, I"ll have a look for you.

Littlefish · 16/02/2009 22:19

Right - my list of whinges.

  1. I still can't customise. My changes won't stay saved. Yes, I have tried F5 and refresh and it doesn't work. It's driving me nuts not to be able to have the "hide" option on threads, and to only have 50 messages at a time on active convos. I can't get SN either.
  1. Threads I'm watching - when new posts get added, why doesn't the thread move to the top of the list? I have to scroll down a list of about 40 threads I'm watching and try and remember what the last message on each thread was.
  1. On many threads, messages don't wrap around the adverts which means that I have large white or blue spaces at the top of threads (or sometimes after a couple of messages)

Thank you. Here endeth my whinge.

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 12:03

Hello,all!

Threadie: the Techs are on the case, re SN in Active Convos.

Littlefish: at your whinge list! Sorry you're still having such trouble. Gerry has posted in answer to you on this thread Hope we can get you sorted out soon

Littlefish · 17/02/2009 13:28

Thanks Helen - I've replied re. the wrapping around messages, but it's the lack of customising that is driving me mad - any ideas? I'm using Windows XP with Explorer.

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 14:51

Littlefish: Ah, Explorer
Think we've having a bit of a hitch with Explorer at the moment.
Techs are on the case.
You might like to give Firefox or Safari a whirl in the meantime.

Littlefish · 17/02/2009 15:33

Technophobe here - what are firefox or safari and where can I find them?

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 15:38

They are browsers - alternatives to Explorer. You can download Firefox for free here

Littlefish · 17/02/2009 17:26

Yeeeeee Ha

I can now customise!

I've downloaded firefox and my changes stay saved, so the problem was definitely with explorer.

No idea about my other two problems yet, but I'll report back.

Will this thread continue past 1000 posts?

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 18:01

Yeehah !

GeraldineMumsnet · 17/02/2009 18:03

Can I join in? hooray for firefox [and Helen]

Littlefish · 17/02/2009 18:28

Does that mean that everyone who is running Explorer and XP will be having the same problems? Surely that must be quite a lot of the members?

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 21:03

Well, we're not entirely sure, Littlefish.

We do know there are some problems with the new site and Explorer - and we're working to fix those ASAP.

NorktasticNinja · 17/02/2009 21:34

Internet explorer (particularly 6) is a nightmare for website programmers. I hope the Techs are being provided with plenty of tea and sympathy

HelenMumsnet · 17/02/2009 21:39

No, we only do tea and sympathy every second Tuesday. Wouldn't want to spoil them or anything

LoveaDAISYcal · 17/02/2009 23:14

I'm still getting a big white expanse before the posts start on some threads.....using IE7

HelenMumsnet · 18/02/2009 11:38

LoveaDAISYcal: Explorer seems to be giving a lot of posters problems at the moment. We're trying to fix that from our end right now but, in the meantime, it might be worth giving Safari or Firefox a whirl.
