A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Hi, I don't know why my screenshot showed the screen not maximised as I usually have it maximised and I'm still getting eyestrain trying to read anything. In fact everything is starting to blur now so I'm off to another forum in a minute. I've never done a screenshot before so must have done something wrong somewhere. Please don't use it as an example of how we can all solve our scrolling problem, because as far as I'm concerned it's only a short-term solution and I won't be able to stick with it for much longer. Sorry.

ChippyMinton · 02/02/2009 21:00

Yoohoo Tech. On the media requests topic, some of us can't see the OP on the threads - there's no paid-for ad in a box.

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 21:10

Hi Chippy - thanks we know about this one and it's on the (very long) list. We'll get to it soonest.

MrsDoylesMole · 02/02/2009 21:14

Thankyou for getting the thread titles back

gill89 · 02/02/2009 21:43

i've just logged on tonight and active convos looked lovely - in nice easy to read columns but it has gone back to all on one line

i want columns back

can anyone tell me how to do it?

ta

simpson · 02/02/2009 22:08

Ok I admit it you have converted me

I now prefer "new" look to "classic" but please can we have the correct posters name next to threads I'm on??

If I go into threads I'm on, it will say my name by the most recent post even if it wasn't me iyswim.

TIA

sorry to ramble on and I know how hard you are all working...
(how many businesses have to put up with a running commentary from the customers whilst trying to update their image?)

but...just want to say...in active convos the TOPIC title is STILL TOO FECKING SMALL!!

Ponders · 02/02/2009 22:42

I really liked it best how it was before

Sorry

TeenyTinyToria · 02/02/2009 23:04

Hi Tech,

It's looking much better, but I have the opposite problem to some other people - instead of needing to maximise my window, I need to make it about 1/2 to 3/4 smaller to get rid of the huge wide white margins which are giving me a headache.

Is this meant to happen (using Firefox) or is this a problem I need to fix?

Thanks, and sorry for complaining!

Furball · 03/02/2009 06:16

Can I just add another item to your todo list?

When in a topic you used to be able to click that topic from the thread now you can't.

I hate the brightness of it all - is there anyway (I can hear you groaning ......) we could have colour scheme options? this blue does my eyesight in and gives me headaches. I have, in your favour, got used to the layout.

FAQtothefuture · 03/02/2009 07:41

Furball you still can but it's not obvious.

if you go to where it says (for example on this thread)

Talk: Site Stuff - and put your mouse pointer over site stuff you can click on it to take you to the topic.

CreativeZen · 03/02/2009 08:11

How do you customise your talkboard so that it isn't mumsnet classic if you've clicked on that button to set it to classic? There doesn't appear to be an undo button.

Because Mumsnet classic isn't how my talkboard used to appear. It is in the same format, but with different fonts and also the highlighted link bit doesn't seem to work on it, so, when I've clicked on a thread title, it doesn't change colour. Most confusing. I suspect this is a ploy to get us to all want the new format.

RustyBear · 03/02/2009 10:48

CreativeZen - to go back to New from Classic, go down the Customize page to the colour schemes section & select New, then Save Changes. Refresh the page and it should go back to the New version.

Polgara2 · 03/02/2009 10:53

What happened to the little yellow icon that showed you whether the member had set up a profile or not and you just clicked on it? I know you can still click on username but you don't know whether it is worth the bother until you get there iyswim!

CreativeZen · 03/02/2009 10:54

Thanks RB. Sorted. Although it's not terribly clear because, looking at the Mumsnet New option, it seems that the link doesn't change colour when you've clicked on it. But it obviously does. Perhaps tech needs to look at that.

HelenMumsnet · 03/02/2009 11:04

Polgara: you're right that the yellow folder profile icon has gone.

And that you now need to click on the person's nickname in the blue bar above their post to see their profile.

We planned it so that, if someone didn't have a profile, their nickname wouldn't be a link (so it wouldn't looked underlined when you moved your cursor over it). Which would mean you didn't waste time clicking on it.

HOWEVER, there seems to be a glitch with this and, currently, everyone's nickname shows as a link (even if they don't have a profile).

We're sorry about this - and it's on Tech's scribbled list itemised spreadsheet of things to fix.

GooseyLoosey · 03/02/2009 11:08

Thanks for looking at the scrolling/ not wrapping Justine. Its driving me nuts. I really hope you can do something about it.

Polgara2 · 03/02/2009 11:08

Aha thank you Helen, with all these glitches am becoming unsure if it's me that's having the problem or the system . And as my brain is fuddled with this fluey thing it's a 50/50 chance of each!

PuzzleRocks · 03/02/2009 11:22

Apologies if it has already been said but it would be great if we could have the 24 hour clock consistently throughout the site. Thanks.

typogrelf · 03/02/2009 11:24

A customise option to avoid having to scroll would be really good, yes!

Furball · 03/02/2009 11:33

another for the list - in advanced search the choose topics section won't let you choose the topics

also - I have mentioned a while ago when searching for say 'christmas pudding' it would be very handy to have an exact phrase search so I don't have to search through every post with christmas in and pudding in.

Polgara2 · 03/02/2009 11:49

Oh yes I second furball's exact phrase search suggestion most definitely.

HelenMumsnet · 03/02/2009 12:35

Furball: that's a good request about advanced search and we will sort that out for you.

It may take us a little while, though: we've a few bigger problems minor glitches to sort out first.

Furball · 03/02/2009 13:29

I can imagine techs desk is bending in the middle with the work load!
