A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

how can i make the print bigger ?

piratecat · 02/02/2009 14:38

my pc is younger than ten yrs, and my size is set to 1024 X 768, and i am scrolling.

i have been told by tech to get rid of my search/faves bar at the side. Not ok, and every other site i use allows me to have this open, but squished iyswim.

sorry , but now you saying about the size?

i don't thik there is an answer is there. not a definitie.

i guess i am very in the minority, at the .5%

yet how many PEOPLE is that.

mummylin2495 · 02/02/2009 14:43

my pc is three years old,i can now see all the sentence without scrolling but i am finding it difficult with such small print.

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 14:44

Hello
We don't want to sound like a callcentre "your call is important to us" BUT
Though we're not changing the margins we are working (round the clock) to sort the text order and size and colour to bring you Mumsnet Classic at its best. But it needs refining to get it exactly the same and there are a couple of jobs ahead in the queue.
Please bear with us.

mummylin2495 · 02/02/2009 14:46

thankyou olivia,we will wait patiently then,[ but can you please hurry ]

prettybird · 02/02/2009 14:55

So is what Tech is saying that the "old" text wrapping facility is gone for good and the only way to stop scrolling is effectively a work around? (ie to have the window the full width of the screen)

That's very

onager · 02/02/2009 15:06

Are we saying we are keeping the tiny fonts? I've been trying to keep up, but having to squint so I can only read a couple of things at a time.

GooseyLoosey · 02/02/2009 15:16

Hi tech - many thanks for replying. My screen resolution is also set at 1024-768 and I really can only read the whole page without scrolling if I maximise the window.

I hear what you say about it being OK for 99% of people. However, previously it seemed to be OK for 100% of people - can't we go back to that? Please?????

wheresthehamster · 02/02/2009 15:17

Thanks Olivia - my eyes are not what they used to be!

tullytwo · 02/02/2009 15:38

No piratecat my favorites column isnt open and I am still scrolling left to right - have given up coming on any other threads but this one until I can get it sorted!

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 15:47

GooseyLoosey, I am not sure of the reason for your not being able to maximise the browser window, so I don't know if this helps, but why not just resize the window so that it fills the screen (which is subtly different from maximizing)?

OP posts:
YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 16:08

Here is a page which shows a screen shot of someone using Mumsnet Talk. The screen resolution is 1024x768 (which 99.5% of MNers have or greater). The browser window is NOT maximized, but it has been resized to fill most of the desktop. Users with higher resolutions won't need to fill the desktop in this way.

No scroll bars, no scrolling to read across the line.

(Technical note: the image has been resized to fit in the space available - in reality the fonts are much bigger and thus more readable. The point here is to show the layout, not the text itself)

prettybird · 02/02/2009 16:18

No more text wrapping

I don't like any web pages that don't adjust to the different sizes you choose to have the "mini" windows

Scrolling up and down is fine, but not side to side as well

alibubbles · 02/02/2009 16:34

I wish I hadn't messed around with my screen resolution as I can't get it right now! On my macbook air it is 1280x800. which is fine, but I can't get my 17" powerbook back to what it was and I can't remember! Everything is blurry and huge now.

LackaDAISYcal · 02/02/2009 16:41

You go away for the weekend and come back and.........whaaaaaat?

looks good YMT

however, I have one teeny tiny moan observation (which has probably been pointed out and answered, but I don't want to have to trawl through nearly 800 posts to find it)
Anyhoo....in active conversations the topic font is very very small. The MN stickies at the top are the same size as before and as the thread title....just all the active convos topics below that.
I'm on, and I'm watching etc seems ok.

I'm using IE7 (I think), windows Vista home premium and viewing in classic mode.

ta muchly.

typogrelf · 02/02/2009 17:06

My resolution is 1280 x 1024 and the only way I can avoid sideways scrolling line-by-line is to have the browser >75% of the full screen width.

Fixed width is common across the internet but having to scroll horizontally line-by-line with the browser window in a normal sort of 'page' shape (rather than close to full screen) is not at all common. I do think a lot of sites would view a design that forced users to do that as one not really fit for purpose (even though it looks good and represents so much good work).

JulesJules · 02/02/2009 17:14

Thanks for sorting out the type colour - really couldn't read the pale blue writing

But what's happened to the games, I liked DH liked the games

piratecat · 02/02/2009 17:41

typogrelf, you speak honestly, and are experiencing the same as me, goosey loosey and others. sorry can't be bothered to scroll to find the others.

onager · 02/02/2009 18:30

Just realised that if they are saying "No more text wrapping" then they must keep the font size tiny to make it fit.

So that is that I guess.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

FAQtothefuture · 02/02/2009 19:17

oh I've just realised the thread titles are in full - when did that happen?

ChippyMinton · 02/02/2009 19:32

Hallejulah - full length thread titles again. Thanks Techies

duckyfuzz · 02/02/2009 19:57

no problems with the look here, but i keep trying to hide topics etc in customize and it wont't save the changes

Notquitegrownup · 02/02/2009 20:43

Hi. Sorry, haven't read all of the posts.

I have my settings set for classic MN, with the darkest colour scheme, but I still can only just read the list of Active Convos. The blue is incredibly pale against the white background. Anyone else suffering from this?

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 20:51

Folks we're going to look at the feasibility of adding no fixed width as an option in customise for people unhappy about scrolling BUT it's complicated I gather and we need to fix all the bugs first, so please bear with us - it could be a few weeks and it may have consquences which make it impossible. We will keep you posted though.

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 20:52

Notquitegrownup fixing the colours in Classic is on the to do list - it may take a few days however. Apologies for the inconvenience (I recommend MN new in the meantime) - it rather grows on you.
