A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Sorry, sorry, sorry to be moaning again

But after a brief happy period last night and this morning when I got in to classic no problem, my browser now seems to have reset itself to new and no amount of pressing refresh (or shift refresh or control refresh) will send it back to how it was

This is on both IE and AOL

Are others having this problem? Pleease oh hard-working stressd tech is this going to be fixed? Pleeease?

RustyBear · 03/02/2009 15:37

Actually, we never had the 12 or 24 hour clock consistently throughout the site before - I remember nitpicking mentioning it on a thread a few months ago.

HaventSleptForAYear · 03/02/2009 16:01

Not sure if this has been said (have had a quick look through the pages, but 33!!

Why is the ad at the top of the page so HUGE!

I have to scroll down miles to get to the top of the thread and then I realise that I have read the full title (because it doesn't appear on active convs) so scroll back up again.

Thanks!

HaventSleptForAYear · 03/02/2009 16:07

Oh. I have now changed my settings and the ads have shifted to the side.

Sorry to bother you (sneaks out)...

Oh - but I agree with Simpson - MY name is next to ALL the thread's I'm on as the last post even when it's not iyswim.

missymum · 03/02/2009 20:16

but please please please can we have the 'last day' function back? really not as easy to navigate with out it , please, it can't just be me??!

Mutt - they'll be regular size in Classic - as they were before.

Coming soon!

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 21:50

Am confused - for a couple of days the text in the message box stopped moving, and then today it started moving again, and now I have decided to write it here it has stopped moving again.
So - is it something you have fixed, does it only happen on certain threads, or what?

Am very glad it has stopped moving again as it was VERY annoying to lose the first letter of the line as it shifted to the left.

Am now only flagging it in case it is a sporadic thing - and it JUST happened again (on this paragraph) so it isn't fixed!! Will it be fixed?

Simply · 03/02/2009 22:47

I have a couple of things I'd like to mention and I apologise if they have already been listed.

I've just been looking at some threads on the house swaps topic and some don't appear to have the opening post there.

When I click "Discussions of the day" and "Most active" on the top right of the home page, it takes me a bit further down the page and not to Discussions of the day or Most active.

Do I need to click something somewhere? Do other MNers have these problems too?

The homepage layout is really strange to my mind with Product Reviews being the first heading I read. If someone was to ask me the top ten things I associate with MN, product reviews wouldn't be on my list but perhaps that is because my children are teenagers and not babies or toddlers.

I used to love it when I had the active convos to 100 or 200 in my subject bar (if that's what it was called.) I hardly ever looked at the homepage in those days and I know some others did likewise.

lulururu · 04/02/2009 05:17

can i ask is anyone else with a mac not able to reset any settings in the customise section? even though i change them and save them and it comes up as changed, nothing actually changes even when i quit and reload. anyone know the answer to that?

lulururu · 04/02/2009 05:23

and also where is the "last day" section in talk without having to do advanced search. that was a great section for checking out the site overall, especially for those of us outside the uk's "last hour" timezone seeing as i'm 12hours ahead in nz and so last hour doesn't get me much at 3pm my time at 3am uk time (although know that this site is for uk people mostly i'm sure the MN word has spread far and wide)

nooka · 04/02/2009 05:49

lulururu I had to clear my caches to get it to work, but it's fine now. Also it seemed to work better in Firefox than Safari - you could try customising in a different browser, because it should then reset in all when you log in. I use active convos now (used to use last 15min in UK) as I've an eight hour time difference. It usually brings up a good range of conversations if you go for 100 last posts.

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 10:01

Simply: we're aware of that glitch with the Small Ads/Media Requests - and that's definitely on our list of things to try to sort out today.

You should be able to get 100 convos back on your Active Convos display: click on Customise, then scroll down to the heading 'Active Conversations and Searches' (third section). There's an option there to set Active Convos to 10, 25, 50 or 100.

The Home Page does have Product Reviews at the top for now (mainly because we know that's what lots of people search for, and it hasn't been very obvious when to find them in the past) but that doesn't mean they'll always be at the top. We may just shock you one day with a sneaky change!

The problem you're having with Discussions of the Day does sound odd, though - do you mean you're taken further down the page when you click on the individual thread links?

nickytamoshantertwotimes · 04/02/2009 11:21

Jesus Christ!
I was away for a week, come back, can't stay permentantly logged in and can't get bloody classic to work.

HELP ME!

LackaDAISYcal · 04/02/2009 11:29

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but there is a problem with the search function.

in the choose topic option the tabs for moving the topics are squished up on the scroll bar of the topic list and don't work so you can't choose an individual topic to search in.

Apologies if it's been mentioned forty times already, but I couldn't check as the search function isn't working

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 11:58

LackaDAISYcal! Yes, it has been mentioned already - and we are working on it as fast as we can

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 13:24

Only if you say please, RTKangaMummy

At the moment, if you are using Mumsnet Classic, the threads in Active Convos doen't (generally) change colour when you've clicked on them. We're currently working on this - and hope to have it fixed soon.

If it's really driving you mad, try Customising to Musmnet New for a bit: the threads in Active Convos there go a lovely purpley colour once you've clicked on them.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/02/2009 13:30

I've been using MN New for a couple of days now and I am actually starting to like it better than MN classic (and have been a diehard classic fan in the past). You should go with it for a bit and see how you get on; it's really not that bad.

Go on, embrace the change! You know you want to

(wish it would stop telling me that I was the last poster on a thread in "threads I'm on" when I wasn't though!)
