A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Is there any chance of getting back the option to find new messages?

I used to love to see every message that was new since I last logged in, but only in a small number of topics that interested me. Now, I have to search through loads of topics to find the ones I want to read, or else use the function to choose my favourite topics but then see only 'active' threads, when I would like to read ones that might not be active.

jabberwocky · 02/02/2009 00:27

Is there any way to make the topic font larger on Active Convos? It looks so small. Also, a thread I have clicked doesn't change to a different color anymore.

RustyBear · 02/02/2009 00:30

You can use the advanced search/time search function to see messages on certain topics since you last checked; at least you will when it is working - I'm sure Tech will get round to it soon....

Mamazon · 02/02/2009 01:28

well when i actually click into a thread it show's up in the old format just about. but the actual talk boards are still this new style and me no likey

wheresthehamster · 02/02/2009 08:15

Just a tiny glitch - in the log-in window if you make a mistake the error message pushes the log in button out of the frame so you can't re-enter your details. You have to exit the frame and start again.

I do like the new log-in window. Can the cursor automatically be positioned at the user name or am I being cheeky?

PuzzleRocks · 02/02/2009 09:01

I can't see the body of the message in either For Free or Media Requests, just the title and subsequent posts.

poshtottie · 02/02/2009 09:08

Can anyone tell me why I can't see the threads I am watching. When I click on it nothing comes up and I have saved loads.

MrsGokWan · 02/02/2009 09:38

I quite like the new layout. The only real problems I have is the threads I have looked at don't change colour, which is a pain.

Polgara2 · 02/02/2009 09:55

Oh dear my active convos was alright yesterday I'm sure it was but now I have full thread titles but chopped in half poster names where the flippin advert is at the top! Am I missing something obvious to do?

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 10:01

Hello everyone

We're sure that with the snow today, there'll be loads of working from home Mumsnetting going on today but rest assured we've got Tech locked in the shed to get the glitches sorted.

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 10:02

Jabberwocky, do you mean unanswered threads?

ange8 · 02/02/2009 10:04

Yippee! I've just scrolled down to the bottom of the search page, and found a box that would allow me to search for new messages in selected topics, as I used to. Now I just need to be able to select the topics, which is not working at the moment ...(but I think in Tech's list?)

Polgara2 · 02/02/2009 10:05

And I can only customise my talk if I change to Mumsnet Classic first, save that, then make changes, save that, change back to Mumsnet new, save that .

GooseyLoosey · 02/02/2009 10:35

Sorry to be a pest and I realise that a lot of work must have gone into the new look, but...

I too suffer from text not wrapping anymore when I don't have the window maximised. Do I gather that this is not something that is to be sorted and is my problem?

I can't maximise the browser for various reasons and don't think I can face scrolling from side to side for too long. Please, please, please help - quite a few people have mentioned this as a problem so it is not just the odd person.

oopsacoconut · 02/02/2009 10:53

Tech

This is the only page for site stuff I can access - Whenever I click on the shortcuts or onto and thing apart from 'threads I'm on' or Active threads I just get a list of dates and names but no clickable threads - am trying to get on BF boards and can't get anytopics up. Otherwise it is FAB.

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 14:06

GooseyLoosey,

You don't need to maximize your browser window, but could you just make it a little bigger in the horizontal dimension? The site is designed to be viewable without scrolling for over 99.5% of our users - you just have to make the window a bit bigger. Hope that helps.

Feck feck and more feck! I want Mumsnet classic back! Is this what happens when I disappear for a bit?

mummylin2495 · 02/02/2009 14:09

i have my whole screen with mn pages but still having to scroll across to read the end of sentences. Then i have to scroll back again to read the start of the next line.

alibubbles · 02/02/2009 14:12

I'm with jabberwocky, larger font and change the colour of threads read.

I also want lines back please!

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 14:18

mummylin,

Do you know what screen resolution you have set? If not, assuming your using Windows on a computer bought in the last 10 years:

  1. Right click on the desktop
  2. Choose Properties (near the bottom of the menu)
  3. Choose Settings (usually the right most tab)
  4. Look in the bottom corner - it should say Screen Resolution.

What numbers are displayed there?

Anything MORE than 800x600 will mean no scrolling.

OP posts:
Sherbert37 · 02/02/2009 14:19

Could we have a bit more text on the thread titles? I don't see enough on many of them to make me want to read further.

LynetteScavo · 02/02/2009 14:27

I didn't have enough warning!!!!

I don't like change. I go off line for a bit, then come back and find everything weird; it's like shopping in a foreign supermarket.

Confused [bewildered]

prettybird · 02/02/2009 14:29

Tech - my resolution is set to 1024-768 and while I do not need to scroll is I maximise the window, it is no longer fine if I have a smaller window. Previosuly, it would wrap to cope with whatever size I wanted.

As I've said before, having the screen maximised is not a porblem if I am MNing from home, but if I am in the office and multi-tasking, then I frequently need to have a smaller window.

I am using IE6.

mummylin2495 · 02/02/2009 14:29

i have changed the resolution to 900x 600 but now i cant see the writing on the left of the page ! and also the writing has gone very patchy.light in some places and dark in others.

mummylin2495 · 02/02/2009 14:32

i have now changed it again and its 1024x 768 and i can see it all now ,thanks .{ gets out magnifying glass to read small print }
