A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

So I press them all at the same time? While on MN? What about smileys - how do I get to use them? I haven't been able to find the squared brackets on Mac.

God, I feel dumb.

RustyBear · 01/02/2009 18:55

Squre brackets on Mac

cariboo · 01/02/2009 19:01

Thanks!!

nooka · 01/02/2009 19:06

I've never known anyone to have the history window open at all times to be honest. But I do now use Safari which lets you have groups of favourites showing as a bar across the top, so easier to access, I guess. Plus I have my google search option available all the time. Certainly at work where I have IE it seems more cumbersome.

dh, who is a web developer said the old site was very dated, and the new look looks very 1995.

shoptilidrop · 01/02/2009 19:12

i do quite like the new mn ( after getting over the shock!)
Its a lot cleaner and fresher.......
BUT

you know where you click 'show all' then ' hide all' to expand and reduce the list of threads.... is there any way of pinning that on what you want it on... i keep clicking show all... then when i go back to talk its changed and i have to click show all again... its quite annoying..... just a thought anyway.

catweazle · 01/02/2009 19:32

What is this Show All you all keep on about? And where is it?

Did nobody else ever use Find New Messages as no-one else has mentioned it. Seems we have the option now of checking every single topic or only looking at Active Convos. It's very boring

NorktasticNinja · 01/02/2009 19:48

The show all is hard to see (bad contrast), but it's in the title bar of Topics, on the right...

NorktasticNinja · 01/02/2009 19:51

Oh, and there are posts in the last 15 minutes and last hour too.

Tinker · 01/02/2009 19:59

Quick one - are threads we've looked at going to turn purple in Classic or not? Is this being fixed?

cariboo · 01/02/2009 20:04

I am getting rather tired pissed off with having to scroll down past the enormous adverts on the left & miles of white space on the right & then having to remember to flip the thread.

RustyBear · 01/02/2009 20:21

Did the hard refresh not get rid of the advert at the top problem cariboo? (you do hold all the keys down at the same time btw)

BitOfFun · 01/02/2009 20:23

Tech, I can't take a screenshot for some reason, but the issue I am having is that the text is too wide so I have to usethe scroller bar every line. Can you help?

Ponders · 01/02/2009 20:29

I just looked at the Topics list - some of them are purple - just not ones I have looked at!

Katisha · 01/02/2009 20:48

Same problem as BitofFun. TOo wide.

nooka · 01/02/2009 21:07

cariboo are you using Safari or Firefox? dh cleared all my caches, but weirdly that didn't do the job on Safari (my default browser) where I had some bits of the site in classic and some in new, and wanted it all classic. He had to go into Firefox and change the settings there to classic, and then Safari reset.

Hadeda · 01/02/2009 21:22

I usually use my blackberry, and now it won't let me access any of the topic pages - only the home page and the talk home page. For all the rest I get a message that the page I've requested is too large. Can anyone help?? I'm really gutted as I usually read MN while feeding DD in the middle of the night and now I'm lonely at 3am!

I've tried changing settings to classic but that makes no difference. (Actually didn't change it on my pc either, but that's probably a different problem...)

Pixel · 01/02/2009 21:30

Ok, I see we still have the scrolling problem but I don't have any favourites boxes or anything like that open.

I'm off to see if I can work out how to do a screenshot.

Mamazon · 01/02/2009 21:32

i want old mumsnet. im very much a "classic" kinda gal and i didn't even ebrace the whole pages lark after the last update.

i have gone to customise and clicked on go back to old mumsnet cosim a duffer, but it just brings this new one up again.

WAAAAIIILLLLL! help

RubberDuck · 01/02/2009 21:40

Mamazon & Hadeda - are you making sure that you a) click on "use mumsnet classic options", b) selecting "mumsnet classic" colour scheme and c) clicking "save changes"? You seem to need to do all three to make the change stick.

Pixel · 01/02/2009 21:42

Well, I seem to have managed to send a screenshot (ok, dh helped, Mr Computer Expert).

Shall I send one of what it looks like when I change the screen resolution so that the text fits on, but is too tiny to read for more than 2 minutes? (while I'm being uncharacteristically techy?)

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 21:42

The colour scheme seems to be the main one I think. That actually seemed to change everything for me. I don't think the other things work if you don't have the classic colour scheme but I may be wrong now.

Pixel · 01/02/2009 21:53

Sorry it didn't seem to work that time. I had a picture of a full page with tiny writing but it seems to have gone big again on the email. Never mind, ignore that one!

Time for a cup of tea and some Christmas cake I think. Anyone else want some?

Hadeda · 01/02/2009 23:45

Thanks Rubberduck - I did try that and I still have the new look (this is on the pc - blackberry is still rejecting). Must be a stupidity thing!

morningsun · 01/02/2009 23:49

sorry to be thick but where is teenagers?!

onebatmother · 02/02/2009 00:04

It's lookin' gooood for me. I've already forgotten what the old, dull one looked like.
