A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

No, it wasn't narrower yesterday. It got shoved to the side, then the right hand margin turned blue and then it went back to white and then moved back to the centre. All in about 30 minutes it seemed

ChasingSquirrels · 01/02/2009 16:59

maybe, seems odd to use 24hr clock on rest of the site, and 12hr on one place.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 17:05

It is a 12 hour one on Active Conversations. It says "PM" after the time (although I'm not convinced it did when I looked before )

ChasingSquirrels · 01/02/2009 17:08

doesn't say pm on mine.
Not a big thing.
And I do like the new format.

ChippyMinton · 01/02/2009 17:13

YMT, I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work. I really like the new look (it was a bit sneaky mucking up classic so we had to use the new style ).
Once you've got the entire thread titles visible on active convos all will be well(although have you noticed we are making thread titles shorter to suit the space??).

Ponders · 01/02/2009 17:14

CS, the PM is coming & going - I just flicked between active & I'm on a few times, & the PM on the active ones disappeared & then came back.

I think YMT is tinkering (or teasing )

ChasingSquirrels · 01/02/2009 17:22

he is, isn't he.

piratecat · 01/02/2009 17:24

HI, well yes, getting rid of my faves coloumn, did fix the problem. Yet i don't have to do that on any other website.

tullytwo · 01/02/2009 17:27

All my text is appearing too wide for my screen which means I am scrolling side to side constantly -which is a pain and so I havent been on here in a couple of days as its too much effort!

What do I need to do to fix it?

piratecat · 01/02/2009 17:35

tullytoo,

i have the same problem. I mailed aphot of my screen to tech. They said it's becuase i have my favourites bar on the left.

Wel I always have had my favourites bar 'appearing' on the left, ever since i have used a pc.

They told me to close my faves bar/search bar. which of course is a pain if you want to search, or use several windows.

i am really not happy.

have you got your faves bar open?

Uriel · 01/02/2009 17:39

I do like the new home page. It's much more attractive and fresher.

piratecat · 01/02/2009 17:42

i'm actually pretty pissed off now that it's 'my problem', considering this is how most people use their browsers? With an immediatley accessible faves/search/history window open to the left?

Shitemum · 01/02/2009 17:47

...and could I just ask - are we going to get the old long thread titles back again? They were half the fun...I don't like guessing the end of the title, it's a waste of valuable MNing time.

bellavita · 01/02/2009 17:50

Well, DH has just come up and said to me - "how are you getting on with your new mumsnet then - whats all the hoohar about?"

He had a look at the format and said it looked fab, modern and up to date and that the old mn was very outdated!

He is in the IT industry!

So I suppose, well done MNHQ!

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 17:51

Can't you change your screen resolution and then use CTRL and the scroll button on your mouse to increase the font size so it is legible for you?

cariboo · 01/02/2009 18:01

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I hate the new format - mind-boggling amount of work there, Tech; you're a genius - but I'm not happy with all the blank space I have to scroll through to get to some text & I find the posts themselves really jammed together. I don't think the typeface is smaller, it's just that it's more smooshed, iyswim.

One side of me says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but the other side says "change is life". Once the hics have been sorted, it'll be great. Right?

Ponders · 01/02/2009 18:05

cariboo, have you tried the SHIFT + REFRESH thing to unsmoosh the type? That worked for me.

mynewnickname · 01/02/2009 18:09

STILL can't get my 'threads I'm watching' back....I can't be bothered to leaf through the squillion posts on this thread and about four others....sorry but can someone help me with this.

Ponders · 01/02/2009 18:13

Someone said earlier today that it's on the list of things to be sorted in due course.

monkeytrousers v thrilled about this as she had hundreds of them

cariboo · 01/02/2009 18:23

I'm also not best pleased that I have to flip a thread before reading the most recent post. But maybe that's there to force us to read the entire thread before posting?

I'm a newbie with Mac too so it's even more confusing. That's why I can't do smileys anymore.

(oh stop your whinging, woman!)

cariboo · 01/02/2009 18:25

So where's shift-refresh on a Mac?

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 18:27

Whatever you use to refresh a webpage should work.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 18:27

If you go into the Customise option you shoujld be able to flip the threads so they read from OP down (remember to click "save" though). Works for me (and back again since I like it upside down)

RubberDuck · 01/02/2009 18:38

On a mac a hard refresh is CMD-SHIFT-R

RustyBear · 01/02/2009 18:44

cariboo - hard refresh (which you may need) on a Mac is cmd-shift-R.
